Bought Thought June 16, 2010

Dang, I never thought I'd feel bad for Megan Fox because she told the truth.

She also compared Bay to Hitler and was a pain in the ass to work with. Always a great idea to piss off the guys who cast movies.

So don't feel too bad for her.

Joe Kelly needs to stop being busy because Four Eyes was awesome.

Right? I'd have instituted my standard "if the creators can't put it out on time, it ain't worth my money" policy already, except the first arc was so good. I think Four Eyes might be one of those series that's just too good to drop even though issues come out months and months apart. I call it "the Planetary Scenario." :)

I've never heard of it. What's the deal?

Depression-era US story centering on an immigrant family consisting only of a mother and son, having just recently lost the father in a job-related accident. The young boy, Enrico, tries to step up and be the man of the family, and it's basically about his relationship with his father's memory as he enters the very shady world his father used to work in. That world, of course, being the world of dragon hunting. :awesome:

The guy controlling the dragon hunting ring has a very old-school gangster vibe, and as Enrico starts learning how dragon hunting works and piecing together the events that led to his father's demise, the implication that it may not have been an accident after all starts to emerge. And in between all of that, he goes through a kaleidoscope of emotions regarding the dragons themselves, first hating them for killing his father, then sympathizing with them when he realizes the hunters do basically the same to them, then bonding with one particular runt, whom he names Four Eyes for the number of eyes it has.

The first arc ends with him and Four Eyes' bond forming, so the story hasn't really unfurled much yet. But Kelly does an absolutely amazing job of getting you into the characters' world and making you understand the complexities of the characters' very realistic lives. It's just superbly written.

That does sound good. I may have to give it a shot. How many issues are they up to, and who makes it?

Only 4 have been released and it's put out by Image.

It seems like all the Man of Action creators time must have been taken up by something else in the past year. The Great Unknown by Duncan Rouleau has been incredibly slow too.

Well worth the wait though.

I passed on The Great Unknown because my shop either sold out of or didn't order the first issue. I saw later issues at the shop, but I figured I could just catch it in trade eventually. Didn't know "eventually" would be like 3 years later. :o

But yeah, Man of Action Studios is basically synonymous with quality lately. Joe Kelly has written so many excellent comics at this point (including I Kill Giants, which I've determined after 4 readings to be my favorite comic of all time) that I will try literally anything based solely on his name alone. Rouleau, Casey, and Seagle are all pretty reliable, too. Casey's responsible for the best Wildcats comics ever (yes, including Alan Moore's run). :awesome:

Yeah, Casey is one of my favourite superhero writer, I love Godland a lot.

Did you ever pick up Bad Dog by Joe Kelly? It's the only thing I passed on and never really heard much about it.

I got the first issue but I don't remember reading it. I may have forgotten to and then decided it wasn't worth picking up anymore if I couldn't bother to read the first issue. Or I did read it and it just wasn't particularly memorable. The premise seemed less interesting than most of Kelly's other work to me.
