Mighty Avengers #23

Nice one, Slott.

The big reveal of the issue is of course that the Scarlet Witch is in reality Loki in disguise which ties nicely all the way back to Avengers #1.

Quite a few bits of good action, though I'm a bit bummed about how Iron Man left, I knew that he was going to screw up so to speak to make way for Hank's ascension, I just wish he had left on a bit better terms. Hopefully, that won't be his last appearance in this book.

I can see this book is going to have a hard time ahead of it. Already divides have formed as far as old school Avengers fan and people who are into the Bendisvengers (if I may steal the nickname).

Yeah. I suppose Bendisvengers fans and classic Avengers fans are simply incompatible. We want different things out of our Avengers.

You know, I've only read the last two issues of Nova, but I'm really digging it.

You seem to be the exception rather than the rule. For the most part, the people who've loved the Bendisvengers from the start seem to be rather bored with Slott's MA, whereas the people who gave up on the Bendisvengers because they couldn't stomach it seem to love Slott's MA.

Slott seems to be able to pull out some classic stuff.

The Loki/Scarlet Witch reveal was genius in my opinion.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Loki's plans for them. He must have some specific reason for forming his own team of Avengers.

You have to understand, slotts roster just lost two power Players. So far the Slotts Avengers have been both funny and interesting. But How long does marvel expect the book to sell with Hercules and Pym and a bunch B level characters as leads?????

All the more reason to hope that Loki's involvement brings Thor onto the team soon. :)

I usually am.

I have my own gripes about MA, but I think it's mostly because I get bored with magic stuff easily. Slott's a more than proven commodity to me, so he gets a wider berth than most. I hope he's on it long enough to do some serious damage. I like that the team is built around Hank, and I like Herc and Jocasta. I never really like USAgent, but if he writes him like they were in Alpha Flight, than I'm cool. The ones that I'm hesitant on are Cassie and Vision. They have real potential, but I would have preferred one or the other (although I can see how they bring that Justice/Firestar vibe for some people)

I loved the ending with Loki, and knowing DS, will inject a lot of the Avengers past in future issues. What's up next, as I really want something different from magic stuff?

Next they fight the Fantastic Four for some reason and wind up with the new-but-familiar base Slott mentioned in an interview. I'm guessing Pietro's gonna be trying to find the Mighty Avengers as a subplot, too. Should be light on magic, I assume, since it's the FF and Loki is the only magic element left from the first arc.

That would make for an interesting twist. I imagine Agatha might sense that something's not right about "Wanda."

Oh yeah, I'm surprised no one mentioned the giant "f*** you" to Avengers: Disassembled (on top of the general "f*** you" to Avengers: Disassembled that is the whole classic Avengers setup of MA). You know, where Chthon laughs off the notion that there is no chaos magic and claims that that was a lie perpetrated by his own followers so that magic-types would be caught off-guard when he returns and rams chaos magic down their throats. :)

X-FORCE CABLE MESSIAH WAR PROLOGUE
Pretty decent prologue issue. We get introduced the main players in the game. Bishop has been hunting Cable throughout various time periods in oreder to find and kill the new mutant baby born during Messiah Complex. Cyclops has dispatched X-force to the future in order to help Cable protect the baby. Seeing as the bands that were created to send them into the future by Beast can only last for so long, they have 24 hours in which to find and help Cable. Whether the plan is the bring the baby back to the present or not is yet to be seen. Great appearance by Deadpool. Also Stryfe shows up and seems to also be a major player as well. Luckily for me I just finished reading X-cutioneer's Song about two weeks or I would have had no clue who he was or his relevance to the story. All in all a pretty stand up beginning issue for the story to come. Looing forward to the rest.

Considering the way Iron Man left and having Loki really being the Scarlet Witch, I'd imagine that Slott will bring them onto the team eventually once Iron Man gets his **** back together and Thor has to confront Loki.

With Iron Man, doubtful; he'd overshadow Hank (so would Thor, for that matter).

How, exactly? If Hank is treated as the leader (which Thor, at least, would have no problem with), he'll get his share of the focus. If it's about inherent star power, why aren't Spider-Man or Wolverine overshadowing Luke Cage in New Avengers?

That sounds cool. Hank and Pietro would have been cool on one team. They both have lost someone significant, they both have been "criminals." And they both have that arrogant vibe to them. Them could have been some good sparks. (Of course, if that's all I wanted, you could make a team of Hank, Pietro, Tony Stark, and Hawkeye. They'd never leave HQ they'd be so busy having pissing contests. USAgent could be the even-minded one.)

I think Pietro will wind up on the team at some point. I checked the solicit after I posted my reply to you and it seems like Pietro searching for Wanda will indeed be a major part of the next issue.

Hank, Pietro, US Agent, and Hercules all on one team. That's a hell of a lot of alpha-males. :)

I never really thought of Pietro as an Alpha Male. Just extremely pissy.

I suppose. He strikes me as the kind of guy who always thinks he can do better, but when he actually gets into a position to do better, he screws everything up. Recent examples of this are all over the place in Son of M, Silent War, X-Factor, and even this Mighty Avengers arc.
