Bought//Thought May 06 2009 Spoilers

I hope someone else was reading it; but, let me say if you get the chance, pick up the 3-issue mini series, "Killer Of Demons." Yost left it wide open for a sequel, and from the online reviews, I hope it gets here quick! This was an awesome, surprising series. The final issue that came out Wednesday has me beggin' for more. Great action...great humor...Yost is pretty darn good.

"New Mutants any good? "

New Mutants was terrific in my opinion. i've got a long post over at x-men forum but suffice to say if you enjoyed the characters in the 80's, you'll dig this. Though it is very much a modern comic, and the kids are grown but still young.

Good choice for first villain; I missed most of the 90's and 00's, so he's not spoiled for me.

If the next few issues are this good I may add it to my very small pull list (I'm a cheap bastard, recession or no).

Invincible Iron Man was a fun read. Dark Reign works really well as a story/metaphor in this title.

(here is aforementioned post, keep in mind there was much discussion of uniforms)
terrific first issue. they do a good job with presenting the new mutants as older and more mature but still a tight-knit clique within the X-Men community.

Great reveal of first villain; always lots of possibilities with him. My favorite arc (and most everyone's favorite) of the first series centered on him, and that's not a bad place to start.

The leather versions of the old x-factor uniforms were a good touch. I never liked any of their individual uniforms...except Magik, who arose strange emotions and urges for a 10-12 year old boy in the middle 80's. A couple of years ago I found and reread my old original Magik miniseries; towards the end I felt like a dirty old man. But I digress.

The coordinating yellow/blue-black colors were distinctive for the new mutants in the 80's and that's a motif that can really work, as long as they're allowed to personalize.

However, Bobby doesn't need anything special really; his visual stroke is defined by his Sunspot persona, so he can always have the "basic" uniform.

If Magik is really back, you know she will have her own look as well as Dani.

Let's be frank, none of these characters, except maybe Magik and the remote posssibility of Cannonball, are ever going to be more than B-Listers within the X-Men. They're most interesting as a group who grew up together, and I don't mind a little "nostalgia" as long as it feels fresh, which this issue certainly did.

I agree. I havent found my LCS in san diego yet so im forced to go to the local Borders and picked up Messiah CompleX in trade. It was all doom and gloom and suffered from some of the same things that I had trouble with in Civil War...namely characters who are friends and allies who dont talk about issues and would rather kill each other. I'd think that Bishop would have at least told Cyclops that the child may potentially be evil but they wanted to demonize Bishop. Hell with all the people who have betrayed the Xmen from within you'd think they'd catch on to the signs of it.

Yeah, a lot of the interrelationships with the X-Men are beyond sordid. But I kind of attest that to the last decade's worth of writing. X-MEN FOREVER is a new launch that "imagines" how Claremont would have written the X-Men had he never left the franchise for seven years in 1991. Which is hilarious because trying to imitate his 19 year run, for better or worse, has defined the X-Men for a lot of time after 1991. It almost is as if Claremont's ghost never left. Morrison's run was also a bit bleak and smarmy in tone, but the scorched earth at least left a few ideas to be picked up on, that sadly weren't (beyond Scott and Emma being a couple, arguably one of the more shallow ideas if his run, as that was only a "who dates who" development). The X-Men are a hard nut to crack.

so technically there are going to be two Ultimate Xmen books??

Not really. ULTIMATE X-MEN from the launch had Millar's sarcastic, cynical, over-the-top style, where everyone had a "can you top THIS" manner of one liner speech, and with a lot of gritty action. Ironically, it was Vaughan who tried to lighten and humanize that book for his 19 issue run (20 if you count the annual), but then during Kirkman's it all went downhill.

I don't expect UNCANNY X-MEN FIRST CLASS to be as bleak. Even if the title for the bridge one shot, UNCANNY X-MEN FIRST CLASS GIANT SIZE SPECIAL, almost begs for mockery.

Again, I'm getting so behind in my comic reading. I did get all four covers of the New Mutants. I can't wait to read it. But, I'm currently reading four books, and it always seems like when I'm reading a book, I'm neglecting my comics. Good to hear people are liking the first issue.

.

when does this come out

I've always wanted to see this because of all the dangling storylines he left that were just not touched upon...Gambit was hinted at having connections with Longshot
for example

Right, the Colossus/Russian mob story, I heard about that. How original. With the USSR gone I guess the only cliche Russian stories Colossus can do are mafia stories. I'm surprised he hasn't wrestled Zangief yet. ;)

Anyway, good to know the X-Men still do some hero work in-between Cyclops asking Team Stabby to kill bigots to prove they're wrong about how dangerous mutants are, and battling Greg Land "drawn" Porn-Warriors.

don't give them ideas
I can hear someone at Marvel right now pitching a 4 part Colossus title where he goes to Russia to wrestle Omega Red for the worlds best bottle of Vodka :)

Of course, Colossus would have to lose, and then be bailed out by Wolverine, because Omega Red is "his enemy". :o

Poor guy. He's sadly become the poster child of what can happen to an otherwise decent character via writer/editorial apathy, the embracing and sole amping of anti-heroes within a franchise at the expense of every other type of character, and never, ever, EVER giving a character a "kick ass, holy **** defining moment of bad-assery" for about a generation. What happens is you become an awesome character who has been middling since about 1988. Where your sole major victory of the 21st century was against an opponent that Lockheed had owned a few issues prior.

Yeah that always bugs me. It seems like every time Colossus and Omega Red go at it Wolverine is the winner.
