MOON KNIGHT #1 by Bendis and Maleev

I am not a fan of Bendis. I find that he writes characters as he sees fit instead of how the characters are.
The issue opens with television version of the retelling of Moon Knights origin. In this new origin Marc Spector had the Jake Lockley identity during his merc days. I knew the issue would have some inaccuracies but I didnt think it would be that soon into the issue.
Anyways Spiderman, Cap and Wolverine show up at the screening part of Spectors new tv show and clue him to the fact that a large chunk of villians decided NY is too superhero infested and they set up shop in LA where Spector now resides. They want him to look into things.
Down by the docks two criminals working for the new LA Kingpin run into Mr Hyde. I had to read this part a few times to figure out it was Mr Hyde as he doesnt look the way I remember Mr Hyde looking. Moon Knight fights Mr Hyde and discovers he was trying to sell an Ultron body to the LA Kingpin.
The LA Kingpin shows up and lifts the boat into the air and explodes it leaving MK with the Ultron head....he takes it back to base and examines it and then we discover that Spidey, Cap and Wolvie are figments of his imagination.
3 out of 10
I know this team did gangbusters on DD but here I think it was subpar. Maleev's art takes some getting used to....at times I was unsure what was happening in a panel.
and yes there was Bendis talking heads scenes

so every week my friend chis (thechrisbrown on the old comics2film site) and mike have this weekly youtube podcast show called WeekNGeek where they preview todays comics. here is todays and if you guys want i can post the new one every week in th bought thought thread.

I've always liked watching video reviews. I liked it back when... I think it was JustABill... did it.

That's cool. I've always wanted to do something like that, or a podcast sort of thing. I just usually lacked two things - the technology (either a camera, editing software, MP3 recorder, etc.) or a friend close enough to me in distance who could actually talk about comics with me. Most of my real life pals are into comics casually, or were fans in the 90's when they were younger, but they're nowhere near my Nerd Belt and usually I feel you need two people of equal lore to make a podcast/video sort of thing work. Otherwise, one person talking to themselves is kind of "shack in Montana" level creepy. And if I got one of my pals to agree to do a "show", they would appear like the sidekick next to my nerd lore and that's not fair or interesting, I say.

At any rate, this was a monster week for me (again), but hopefully my reviews will be here on Thursday or Friday. Right now I'm just pleased at the extra helping of Avengers Academy/Young Marvel Hero stuff we got. More on it in the near future.

yea these guys also have other stuff too, they have a podcast called the Zod Complex and they have a different one called Geek Fights where the name pretty much explains it. I like Zod Complex myself but i have been on a few episodes of Geek Fights.

Best issues for me this week so far are Uncanny X-Force #9 and Avengers Academy #13.

I'm in the same boat Dread...its damn near impossible to find people who are into comic books unless your at a convention or something. :(

Think I'll continue Herc. Hobgoblin was the reason I gave it a chance, and I think I may stick around just for the concept.

Right. I've never been on a podcast before. My closest stab at Internet fame was a cameo appearance in Midtown Comics' video coverage of the premiere of "SUPERMAN/BATMAN APOCALYPSE" at the NYC Paley Center from Sept. 2010.

I second that last one. Don't worry, my "WALL OF TEXT" reviews will be forthcoming.

Especially if you're shy to begin with, like I am. I probably could chat up more people at comic shops, but...I usually am in a rush.

That isn't to say my friends know nothing of comics. One of them was invested in WORLD WAR HULK and I've loaned him comics before. They would all just be considered casual at best while I'm the sort of dork who knows who D-Man and Ambush Bug are. In a podcast or video about comic stuff, especially the weekly grind, I would come off like an expert and they'd sort of be asking me about references and whatnot for half the thing. Sort of like if they ran a podcast about dating and I was on it. ;)

Good, because it's a solid concept.

Fraction really needs to improve the pace of Fear Itself.

ugh, i'm really not liking fear itself at all. i get what they are trying to do and everything but i just...it's too similar to blackest night. also the hints about someone dying in the next issue..yea bummer.

I could not really get into Herc for some reason. Maybe it's the annoying-as-s*** new Hobgoblin. Maybe it's the fairly tepid attempts at humor that pale in comparison to iHerc's wit. Maybe it's just the lack of scope inherent in this approach to Hercules. I don't know. Neil Edwards is still drawing too, which doesn't help. I liked elements, especially the plot twist toward the end, but I just came away feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Hopefully it gets better as time goes on. Hopefully Herc stops being so dour, too. It's just not as fun when he's solo and actually competent and driven.

Fear Itself's second issue was all right. I found it slightly hilarious that this issue is dedicated almost solely to the Worthy, yet Fraction couldn't manage to squeeze in every Worthy's origin. He got, what, 4 out of 7? Decompression's great, huh? But what we did get was good. I like that the Absorbing Man, of all people, seems to have doubts about the hammers. And it looks like the hammers are indeed possessing the Worthy more than anything else; the ones who are already pretty evil embrace it, but we can see some of the good guys, like the Hulk, actually struggling to fight the hammer's influence. That should create some fun conflicts later on. The centerpiece of the whole issue, of course, had nothing to do with the Worthy; it was Thor standing his ground and flat-out calling Odin on what a ***** he's being. That was an exciting exchange--so much so that I barely noticed what a dick Odin's still being. I can even kind of understand why he is that way after that line about how he'd like to explain if he had the time. If the scope of this threat is as overwhelmingly huge as he makes it out to be, it's kind of understandable that he'd just roll right over any objections rather than allowing a modicum of dissent to wither away the Asgardians' resolve. Casts a different light on the proceedings lately--not so much just Odin being a jerk, but Odin being a jerk because the alternative would be sacrificing everything just to have a chance to explain. Although abandoning Earth is cold however you look at it. We'll see if the interpretation of Odin gets balanced out any better over the rest of the series. Not as bad as how he was portrayed in the first issue, though. I'm enjoying the event overall so far.

When Fear Itself is over Odin needs to banish himself to Midgard to learn himself some humility. Guys a frickin *****e.

Haha, it's true. He's worse than Thor ever was the way Fraction writes him.

Can anybody explain to me UXF #9? I was really lost reading that. Who was the old guy Magneto wanted whacked? And why did Logan do it? Did he know the guy? I'm totally lost here......

I think Logan did it simply because Mags had all the cards there. He basically blackmailed him. And I assume the guy he killed wasn't just your standard Nazi, but someone who Magneto knew personally.

But for me, it was the weakest issue of UXF thus far.

The old man that Magneto wanted whacked was a Nazi who was probably involved in the concentration camp that Magneto was in during World War II. And Logan did it because Magneto begged him to kill a man who was deserving of it.

I'm gonna have to agree with Morningstar that is was pretty weak. It desperately needed more of a back story, instead the whole issue came off as a waste of time. I know Mags is joining Logan's camp soon but still.......

Yea I mean, it's pretty obvious that Mags knowledge of X-Force will play a part in events later on.

But this issue just seemed... i don't know... empty? Just anti climatic filler. Looking at the preview and how it ended with X-Force coming back and Mags sitting in that chair I couldn't wait to read the book. Then I finally did and was like, is that it?

Wait, what? Magneto had Wolverine assassinate some Nazi? But... he's Magneto. Why wouldn't he just off the guy himself?

Maybe he just likes the fact that he has some power over Logan in this situation and enjoys using him?

Ugh I dunno. This issue just didn't do it for me.

So, wait, was the whole multiple personalities thing in Moon Knight written like a twist or something?

That's what I'm saying, it was a real head-scratching issue. Well, I guess after 8 straight (or 9 if you include the .1 issue) incredible issues it was about due for a stinker.....

Because he's a very public part of the X-Men now. If he did something like this, it would irreparably damage the X-Men's reputation.

That argument might make sense if Wolverine weren't also a very public part of the X-Men. And the Avengers. And the New Avengers. It's not like Wolverine's the only person capable of stealth.
