Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

A 3rd film will happen but alot of this again has to do with competition being way to damn fierce. Too many big movies and people have a tendency to want to see brand new films in the theatre so if they miss one the week it comes out they tend to wait for the DVD in many cases. Then you have piracy. FF4 is not going to make as much as the 1st film now....now way in hell. But the market is changing and we have to accept it. Piracy is really hurting the industry more than ever. It's not just Fantastic Four it's everywhere. The good thing is Superhero films are always gonna be an attraction at the "BIG SCREEN' because these are the type of films that really need to be seen there. Comedies and Drama's honestly can wait till DVD except the really funny ones where it's fun to be in a big crowd. Studios need to realize that there is more Real estate out there than just May-July. Look how good 300, Ghost Rider, Night at the Museum, Harry Potters, LOTR's did. Ghost Rider did great because it was a nice little booster shot before the Summer, 300 was just awesome and it probably paid off to be released by itself like that with litte competition. I think F4 is a perfect type of film for the Holidays as long as the competition in action films isn't there.

Weekend actuals are in. $ 20,009,476. Down 65.5 %. Domestic total $ 97,463,035. $ 125,228,139 WW. Overseas #'s thru 6-18. $ 2,732,760 behind FF.

Those overseas #'s are NOT updated. It's at 57 million overseas updated yesterday per Variety. Mojo's overseas #'s not updated. It's at 154 million worldwide.

Updated thru 6-18. Can't you read ? :oldrazz: It's past 6-18 so no they are not updated to curent figures. DUHHHHHHHHH. LOL

^ Transformers should have a big drop off in the second weekend as well. Probably near 70%. The film has zero femal appeal which is neccessary for the HUGE numbers to be sustainable.

It's unlikely to have a drop that big. It's being released on a Tuesday; that's three days of burn-off before the three-day weekend, which should decrease the second weekend drop substantially.

^ That's true GL. I forgot about that. However it shouldn't effect the dollar amount of the second weekend. It'll make less the 1st weekend since it's spread out quite a bit Tues-Sun as you say so the drop off "SHOULD" be quite a bit lower than usual but all that's doing disguising the drop off. Transformers will be all over the internet the day after it's released and all the thieving movie pirates will be hurting this film along with Potter. It's too bad. I do think that opening it on Tues is smart in one way but that will allow it to also get pirating BEFORE the weekend. Still it's a big screen type of film and will have a huge opening. It won't go much over 200 but I agree it'll get there. Perpahs 225 range even. That's only if it has a 100-130 million Tues-Sun.

Well it should lose 70 % of whatever it makes. AD is right it has no staying appeal. The Transformers fans will have gotten it out of their system in those 1st 10 days, then the bottom falls out. It should do well overseas. They go for that robot stuff over there. Over here, it's a fanboys movie only. It will have zero appeal with the public once they see it the 1st time. It's front end loaded. That's why they are opening earley. It should make budget those 1st 10 days.

Take it you are a Spurs fan?

If so, you guys were mean to my Cavs.

I wouldn't underestimate TF second week.

But that's just me.

I think Transformers will do fine to warrant a sequel, so will FF2

FF2 will probably make less than the first one. Do you think there will be a third one?

My gut feeling: Silver Surfer in summer 2009. If that's successful, FF 3 follows in summer 2010. If the Surfer disappoints, FF 3 probably doesn't happen.

But even the presence of the SS didn't help FF box office. Do you think he could a carry a movie of his own?

Different demographic, so yes he could.

Plus, it would probably be cheaper.

Fox will probably feel that the Surfer was a very popular element in the film, and instrumental in producing the $ 58 mil opening. Their thinking could well be that the Surfer has a certain level of saleability, and they can get a good profit as long as they don't spend too much. Unfortunately a relatively tight budget would mean fans wouldn't get the kind of grand cosmic adventure most would want from a Surfer film.

A smaller spin-off going over his origin and dealings with Galactus is enough for the first. Sequels are for grand-scale cosmic movies (assuming the spin-off is successful).

But didn't they include the SS to attract that demographic you're talking about?

Plus, they included his name on the tittle of the movie.

Yes, but he is not really an overly light-hearted, or humorous character like the FF are.
