Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Honestly, I kind of expected both FF and Die Hard to do better than this, at least till Transformers shows up. but then I seem to be the only one really turned off by that rat movie.

FLOOOOOPPPPIIINNNN!

Wrong.

A movie's success is generally indicated by whether its domestic gross reaches the point of its budget. This is why different films have different measures where they are considered "successes."

For example, Daredevil is considered successful despite making only $102.5 million domestic. Why? It cost only $78 million to make.

Ghost Rider is considered a success despite making only $115 million domestic. Why? It cost only $110 million to make.

RotSS cost $130 million to make. If it reaches $135-140 million domestic, it will be disappointing compared to the first film, but still successful.

Simple.

A roundup of some of the predictions for this weekend:

Box Office Guru: $ 57 mil for Ratatouille, $ 31 mil for DH 4, $ 15 mil for EA, $ 9.5 mil for 1408, $ 9 mil for FF 2.

Box Office Prophets: $ 56 mil for Ratatouille, $ 34.1 mil for DH 4, $ 16.2 mil for EA, $ 13.4 mil for 1408, $ 9.6 mil for FF 2.

Coming Soon: $ 62.7 mil for Ratatouille, $ 34.3 mil for DH 4, $ 15.2 mil for EA, $ 11.3 mil for 1408, $ 9.2 mil for FF 2.

Entertainment Weekly: $ 41 mil for Ratatouille, $ 35 mil for DH 4, $ 15 mil for EA, $ 10 mil for 1408, $ 10 mil for FF 2.

There's no way it'll get to $135m. Not with Die Hard, Ratatouille, Transformers, and Harry Potter all in the next two weeks. It'll die out between $120-125m.

Even with a bad weekend, it will be at 120 million by next Sunday.

I don't think Ratatouille will have that big of an opening. I could be wrong but I dunno...just doesn't do it for me like The Incredibles.

It's definitely not one of the more appealing ones. A rat in paris who helps a chef, just doesn't seem as compelling as seeing a bunch of race cars driving around, or Superhero's or Toys.

I didn't have any interest in talking cars. Or in a rat who wants to be a chef and helps a teenager become one by pulling on his hair.

I saw all the Pixar films up to these last two, but I skipped Cars and don't really care about this either.

^ Cars was awful IMO but it did good at the Box Office. This looks a bit more interesting but nothing like the earlier films. Even Shrek has lost it's luster.

Ratatouille is getting rave reviews, so I think word of mouth and its legs should be very strong. I think it'll open in the low to mid 50s and then hold up well.

I liked cars, but hey I'm a NASCAR fan, so Im biased. I'll admit thought it's not up there with Toy Story or the Incredibles, or Nemo. I did like it better than Monsters Inc. though.

New Regency has Daredevil not Fox. :) New Regency has no possible way of getting a film out before the rights revert to Marvel at the end of this year. LOL So that's the great news for Daredevil fans. Marvel will have it back soon.

That is good news AD.

How did New Regency get in on this and what was Fox's role before?

[Edit] Oh I read some later posts and saw your answer, ok. Hmm odd something still seems off though. Exactly who is Regency and how is the Avi Arad/Regency/Fox/Marvel deal put together. Who makes the call on the movie, Regency? Avi seemed rather disappointed in how Elektra turned out, was he very involved in pushing that movie.

But did you have interest in a CG film about a lost fish name Nemo? Which said film made over 800 Million worldwide.

It's already getting stellar reviews. I guarantee Ratatouille will do atleast 50 Mil opening weekend, and best Die Hard and F4, maybe even Shrek 3. If not I'll come back here and eat my hat.

Before the figures are in, I'm "re- guessing" : A $54 million opening for Ratatouille, but then a very impressive run after that.

Again...New Regency has always been on board. They're the only one who have ever held the rights since Marvel "leased them out" to NR.

BOOYAH TO THOSE WHO SAID THERE WOULD BE NO FF3.

That article also says expect a team-up.

If that be the case, INHUMANS!!!

Oh, and good news on the DD front...I hope Marvel gets me the DD2 I have been waiting for since the DC!!!

FF3 is a given. Even if it only made 240 million worldwide from theatrical revenue it'd be enough to warrant a sequel and for Fox to hold onto the rights. :)

I knew it all along. People here are just too negative. As a matter of fact, society as a whole is.

All FF2 would have to do is break even at the box office to get a sequel. What interestes me the most is they better extend the contracts before filming part 3. THe last thing we need is a over crowded closed end storyline.

Why they may do the SS spin-off first.

Why they may do the SS spin-off first.

Oh Dear Lord no SS spin off please, especially coming from FOX. FOX won't get it right. I bet he'll be stationed on Earth and defending the planet from some threat, oh no wait, that's to much to even hope for there. FOX will have some earth based villian. Thanos will probably be from Earth and be hacked uped like Doom. SS worked fin in the F4, but as solo you have to make him interesting as a stand alone and he also has a rich history that FOX will never get or understand. Mark Frost, Simon Kinberg, Zak Penn and the other usual suspects will be called for writting duites. Dear sweet lord just leave the Surfer in the comics, although I think Luc Besson would work, but FOX won't hire anyone like him or better.
