Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Well then,what is the total this film has made to the first one?Will sales drop,because of Die Hard and Transformers..and possibly Harry Potter?

It has nothing to do with a crowded release date. It's simply bad word of mouth.

This very place was showing how the flick would be received. I was really hyped when the first WETA pics of the Silver Surfer were around.

But then the bad rumors on Galactus started (all confirmed); the bad rumors about Doom (the same); the first bad omens with the corny powers' switch and dialogues from the trailers and clips.

I bet people are feeling like that after leaving the theatres. I was. "Damn, he did it again!"

The polls we have access to like IMD and Yahoo (we all have to go check, that is the post carp sig reality) say the GA likes the movie. Now those polls could be misleading, who knows.

My opinion:

Fox needs to realize all the kids are internet savy now. Bad buzz and info will reach them.

Also the exit polls said that over 50 % (a report I saw on yahoo) the audience had 50% as over 25. Even if a lot of them are parents in tow you still have to throw them a bone.

Now I loved the movie, but it did not have an opportunity to resonate (I will not mention the running time again, ...oops).

They were the fantastic four but again in hind site, horatio and Nokio and others like yourself will point out that a classic story deserves classical treatment. Ask Frank Miller about his 300 adaptation. The guys that created this stuff and had it resonate with an audience that loves comic book properties usually know when they get it right. Wow, what a thought, that there is a reason that a thing is successful in that it works.

So for Mark Frost to sit and think that Kirby and Stan's ideas are silly and corny and need to be updated for the masses, hmmm, why make an FF film and make all these changes that will bring down the wrath of the hardcore fan and kill the buzz for your movie. That is just not smart.

This is a story based on the introduction of the Silver Surfer and you really should not have done that story unless you brought in Galactus. However I will thank Tim Story for throwing me a bone in the .000001 second of screen time that his firey outline had. I guess something is better than nothing.

I have no doubt this movie could get a sequel. If it is going to be at 115 million this weekend that means that 120 million is assured and probably 120-130 million is likely.

They just made their budget.

International numbers look much better than before.

So it looks like the movie will end up with the same profit percentage.

FF3 is doable unless Fox thinks "well we made our money lets get out while the going is good".

Fox clearly does not like to take risks so that scenario is certainly possible with them. When is Daredevil 2/3 coming out?:csad:

Anyway if all we get is the two movies well I guess that will be it.

However I would say to Fox take a chance, take the hands off, the suits off and let the creators cut loose.

We are down a bit because the movie is better but making less money. Remember when people complained about how lousy (I like that one too) the first was and that we should ignore the box office. Ok well this movie is going to make its money back and then some. It will easily cover its budget. I say Fox owes us :woot: and its own credibility a shot at greatness. They put themselves in the boat and set sail to where they are now and they have to bring this thing home. They have to finish this thing out and give us FF3.

I am hoping for the best.

New Regency has Daredevil not Fox. :) New Regency has no possible way of getting a film out before the rights revert to Marvel at the end of this year. LOL So that's the great news for Daredevil fans. Marvel will have it back soon.

Considering Fox really has nothing else, it would be dumb of them to scrap this project. Fox is a very successful media franchise, but of the movie studios they just don't put out a good product overall.

This is not recent, you can go all the way back to the 1920's when Fox fired Shirley Temple because she got "too old". Shirley Temple went on to have a fairly successful adult film career, although she will always best be known for her children's roll.

Really? When did that happen? Not suprising, no need for them to keep it, if bonehead Ben refuses to do another movie.

First off Fox is not gonna scrap FF3 any more than Sony will scrap Spidey 3, or Fox will scrap X-Men. Those rights are too valuable and they got them for too cheap to give away. Fantastic Four is Fox's biggest money making franchise next to the X-Men. Die Hard is up there too but that doesnt' have the volumes of stories to tell or the longevity of the FF.

It happened on day 1. Fox never owned the rights to Daredevil or Elektra. Never. Distributing rights...yes.

105.9 million now for FF2 going into the Holidays here. Should give us a nice boost.

I'm guessing it will finish between 135 and 145 million. If current trends hold it will be surpassing what the Hulk made at a similar point by end of next week.

It's statisically performing better than Hulk but because Hulk had a 62 million dollar opening, both films had to do some catch up.

The actual is in (it went up a little from the earlier estimate):

$ 1,879,830 (+ 0.5%) for $ 105,800,808 so far. That's $ 4,484,101 behind what FF 1 had made after the same number of days.

$ 5,916,933 (- 35.1%) for Die Hard 4.

At this rate anything over 140 million would be a gift. Still it'll make enough to warrant a sequel. They need to choose their release date better and keep improving on the quality. A longer movie would be nice too if it's good the whole way through. :)

I'm surprised at that drop on Die Hard. It was a damn fun film. I little over the top with that jet scene but overall non-stop fun. I would have guessed 50 million Wed-Sun but some are pegging it much lower.

A 35% drop from a Wed opening is pretty good actually. I think it'll have a good increase and make about $ 45 million for Wed-Sun.

BOM has the Thursday estimates:

$ 5.95 mil for Die Hard 4
$ 1.827 mil for FF 2 (- 2.3%) for $ 105.748 mil.

FF 1 made $ 2.34 mil on its second Thursday for a total of $ 110.284 mil. The gap has now widened to $ 4.536 mil.
$105 million domestic for FF2 isn't terrible so far. Certainly not looking like it'll end up like a bomb like Evan Almighty seems to be going at the moment.It is a major disappointment though.In spite of the 92 minute running time (more screenings per day), the movie being better than the first (what the majoriy seem to think), the sex appeal of Alba and Evans, star additions such as Andre Braugher and Laurence Fishburne and last but not least cool character like the Surfer it hasn't elivated it to levels of the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises.

I think the fate of greenlighting of a FF3 and SS spin-off depends on the international numbers.IMO Fox should have done a day and date type mega release or push it back to the Thanksgiving/Christmas period to avoid the overcrowded summer market.

You "loved" Happy Feet?! :wow: :oldrazz: :o

Happy Feet was one of the worst cartoons I have seen in years. Horrid film! Flat "comedy", unintelligent humor, boring plot.

Your.
Opinion.

Me, I haven't even seen Happy Feet. But I'm sick of seeing some people act horrified at other people's tastes as if their own opinions came from a burning bush.

Yeah Ratatouille could go either way......Surf's Up didn't do all that well this summer.....maybe the kids are penguined out and a rat is something new and exciting....lol

Just back from Ratatouille and all I can say is WOW. I enjoyed it more than any previous Pixar film and considerably more than any of this year's superhero outings.
Word of mouth is going to be super on this film. It's gonna have some looong legs for a rat.
If only someday Pixar (and Brad Bird) would make an animated FF... :csad:

There's no way it'll get to $135m. Not with Die Hard, Ratatouille, Transformers, and Harry Potter all in the next two weeks. It'll die out between $120-125m.

^ It should hit 130. It's a big Holiday weekend and these are Summer weekdays. I say 125-130 now.

well lets hope that when the holidays start world wide the film will will be seriously boosted

As of this Monday, BoxOfficeGuru was predicting a finish between 135-140.
