Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Just talked to my manager friend at the local multiplex. TF has 8 showings, and they were 35 % full today. 2,000 tickets available, sold 700.

The slow summer has not been for lack of hits. Along with the big- three blockbusters, Universal's comedy "Knocked Up," the Warner Bros. casino caper "Ocean's Thirteen" and 20th Century Fox's superhero saga "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" all have topped $100 million."

"Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third" and "At World's End" all will finish above $300 million but well below the $400 million-plus domestic gross of the best of their earlier installments.
To pessimists, that creates the two-sided perception of a $300 million blockbuster also being something of a disappointment.
"When we start snubbing our noses at $300 million, that's a problem," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney.

The industry and audiences nowadays are preoccupied with first weekends, when theaters are packed to the rafters for big releases. But few movies stick around in subsequent weeks the way they once did.
"We're all focused on the biggest opening you can get on these films. If you don't have a $100 million opening, there's a lot of negativity, which shouldn't really be," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution at Universal.

Guess I don't live in such a "remote region" after all, huh?
Harry Potter is the only 800 lb gorilla left this summer.

I really think Transformers will sink like a brick after this Sunday.
(At least Independence Day had Will Smith.)

Yea. We get too caught up in opening weekend box office. No film, not even Spider-Man 3 has equaled its predicessor, in domestic box office, so It's not just FF 2. Spider-Man 3 even had $ 151 million opening weeked, and it still will not beat Spider-Man 2's domestic.

Not only this summer, but this year I think.

What other huge blockbusters are there coming out after the summer this year?

Once HP opens it's over.

Nothing. Hollywood shot it's load the 1st 7 months of the year, and don't have a lot to show for it. Simpson's movie, other than that I don't know.

The Golden Compass in December. It likely won't go over $ 300 mil domestic, but could be big nonetheless - maybe mid 200s.

Guys, let´s put the fanboyism bias aside for a moment. I liked SR, I disagree with those who say it "bombed", but I can admit that the movie was a disappointment for the studio. Now, FF2 is not a bomb either, but if you think Fox is not disappointed with these numbers, you´re way off. This movie cost more than Hulk and is gonna make about the same at the box office. I wouldn´t expect Fox to be in such a rush for a sequel.

Well I would not say that superman bombed either it was close enough to budget with the tax credits and stuff to be considered a box office success and the world wide figures and tie ins and DVD sales and tv licensing took it over the top.

However I know that movie could have been better as could FF2 and FF1.

Superman the movie is my all time favorite and I am a Marvel Comics fan first and foremost. I left STM feeling inspired, I left SR feeling somewhat cheated, like how the Galactus situation makes me feel with FF2.

FF in my mind has the potential for some of the greatest SCi FI superhero stories of all time. I want a sequel cause I think what we got is better than nothing and 2 was an improvement on FF1 so I can expect the same with number 3 as long as they keep Tim and get their own greasy hands out of the pot.

The theater insiders on the HSX board are saying TF is headed for a massive Tuesday take - lots of sold out shows. So we'll see.

Agreed, but I think writer Don Payne is more essential to the mix at this point than Tim Story.
I'm not against Story at all; I'm just really hoping that Don Payne is asked back.

I agree. Payne and Story back. Show Frost the entrence to the negative zone, then push him in and bolt the door.

I Am Legend (Will Smith = $$$) and National Treasure 2 should prove to be big hits this December. Also, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium should do well in November as well.

Yeah, they should be successful (although I won't be surprised if National Treasure 2 takes quite a big dip from what National Treasure did). There's also Bee Movie and Beowulf.

OH Yeah! How could I forget about Beowulf!

I could care less about Legend(resident evil was enough zombie garbage to last a lifetime), Treasure seems ok

Sounds like you guys want TF to sink at the box office.:cwink: Most people seem to gushing about it even the Bay haters so let's wait and see how this turns out.

That Harry Potter will be a box office smash is a no brainer really.

No, I do not want it to sink at the box office.
As far as I'm concerned, I ain't got a dog in that race.
I said I THINK it will sink at the box office after this weekend.
And checking the reviews (and the Hype forum) no, most people are not gushing about it. Most find it visually stunning, but there seems to be a consensus that something essential is lacking.
Kinda like with FF2.

I don't want it to sink at the BO, but as you call tell, I'm rotting for Potter :oldrazz:

I went and seen that Ratatooie flick or whatever and their were so many people there for TF. It was like SW and the other big ones like Spiderman and POTC. TF is going to do good I suspect and i heard the audience cheering constantly. The movie is quite loud and we heard cuase we were in the next theater to it. I suspect this will do better then most is giving it credit to. At first i said it'll get between 200-250 mil tops domestically, but I take it back. I think TF will do over 300 million, and probably go on to be the biggest hit of the summer and maybe the year.

^^ With Harry Potter opening next week that is unlikely. Potter will cannibalize It and vice versa if TF opens strong. It just is the way it is going to be, To beat Spiderman given the proximity it has to Harry Potter would be amazing, while anything is possible with the way the summer is panning out that is highly unlikely.

It's just that i got that feeling in this thread not just from you perse. But if you and others say you do not want it to sink i have to take your word for it.:cwink:

 I see it differently.
No movie is perfect and i certainly didn't think the dialogue was great but for this film i didn't mind because i was having such a nice time. I'm seeing more people give this an above average rating than i've seen for the other heavy hitters this summer. Also, it's been a long time where i've been to a movie that's got everyone in the theater so immersed in the action. People actually cheered when the Prime introduced himself and the Autobots and applauded at the end too.:wow:That's very rare in theaters here.

I'm not against Story at all; I'm just really hoping that Don Payne is asked back.

I think Payne is essential as well as he clearly has a better touch on this than Mark Frost (unfortunate initials indeed), and the little things he included like the Ultimates quarterback speech is encouraging. He seems to know what to use. I also like how he got Doom back into the swing of things and healed him as well. It all fits with the emerging connection they all have to the Silver Surfer and ultimately Galactus.

However I really think that Tim is not being given enough credit for pulling this thing together. The first script was a mess as far as being faithful to the FF mythos and yet they were able to IMHO begin to fix a lot of the problems created by the suits and Frost.

Honestly I would like to see if Tim can hit a home run out of the park. However if Fox does not cut him loose (on the movie that is) we can expect FF3 to be another good film but not great.

I could only see them hiring a new director if they were going to do part 3 and 4 together, which they might want to do to reduce the costs. This is the way to go in my opinion.

I think Tim also wants a little breather from the pressure cooker that is Fox. Him going over to the WB ala Singer may be an indication that he needed a change of scenery. It can't be an easy thing being micromanaged by a bunch of MBAs.

I still think that the Galactus storyline has to be tied up and I don't really see it happening in a Silver Surfer spinoff, unless that film is about the actual reappearance of Galactus leading into his determination to eat the earth, but I can't see or would not want them to resolve Galactus' situation in that movie.
