Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Never happen that way. FF already had it's sequel and the SS film is moving forward. It's a totally different franchise in itself.

An SS movie will be difficult. In the comics, he flies around making monologue speeches to the emptiness of outer space. That won't work in a movie.

We'd need to see his origin, we'd need Galactus, we'd need supporting characters.

And I don't think the SS is established enough in the mainstream. There are no animated series, no children's books. And it won't get the budget to be an epic. It will be small scale in its production, and small scale in its box office. Which is the current problem with FF.

^^ I can't quite agree on the small scale angle, George lucas spent like 113 million on ROTS now I know that George owns ILM but if he can make a spectacle like he did with what he put on the screen just get the guy to do FF, Weta must be too expensive or something.

Look at the star wars movies, the second and third did not lack for action.

He did say all the FX heavy movies are coming to him and he blasted Spiderman for not using his services (I think lol) but hey if he can do an epic FF I would overlook that indiscretion.

I tend to agree with X-Maniac on some points. My concern is they would really kiddie an SS movie up.

I think it could work if done right and there should be enough action scenes in between to keep things interesting. It's not for everyone though and they shouldn't try to make a Silver Surfer film for everyone. The comic surely isn't. Though it needs to appeal to enough people to support the budget it requires to make a good film.

Hence my observation that it shouldn't be FOX that continues making Fantastic Four films.

Been doing a little comparision between FF, and FF 2 as far as theater count goes on a week by week basis.

Week 1 FF 3,602 FF 2 3,959
Week 2 FF 3,619 FF 2 3,963
Week 3 FF 3,449 FF 2 3,424
Week 4 FF 2,744 FF 2 2,618
Week 5 FF 2,339 FF 2 1,312
Week 6 FF 1,617 FF 2 601

FF loss 1,985 theaters. 55.0 %
FF 2 loss 3,358 theaters. 84.8 %

That is why it will not make near 300 million.....

At this point I'm thinking that FF 2 will be Fox's # 3 or #4 film for the year. As I've said before, I think Die Hard 4 will gross more than FF 2 worldwide. And now The Simpsons Movie is tracking for a big domestic opening (over $ 50 mil) and looks to play very strongly overseas, so it'll likely gross more than FF 2 as well. Then there's Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium in November, which could be a contender.

Fantastic 4 had the CGI to allure people to the theaters. Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer was the sequel to a film that taught people that the CGI wasn't worth the film around it. This is why the BO is not the be-all and end-all to filter reactions to a film.

Does FF2 still have markets overseas to open to?

According to this, http://www.comics2film.com/index.php?a=story&b=28146 Kevin Feige says they´re working on the SS spin-off, which to me smells like it´s gonna be the same deal that happened to DD: they´re gonna make the spin-off as if it were the sequel, it´s gonna tank and kill two franchises at once.

So basically a Silver Surfer film is going to be made..even when FF2 was a dissapointment?I dont understand this, its like making something and only getting a few extra dollars for the effert in the first place. No big cash get, only Spider-Man can do that..and the staff is getting tired,it looks like SM4 will be the last with the current cast..and if you belive the rumors..end of the franchise as well..because im not going to see new actors doing a role that has already been defined.

^ You would have to be a complete idiot to believe anyone that says Spider-Man 4 is the last film in the franchise. Just as much as Superman: The Quest for Peace and Batman and Robin were the last of their franchises. Jourmugand it just takes a quick search under your name to show your posts are generally subtle pieces of bait and nothing more. It's like you ask sarcastic rhetorical questions daily. Get a grip.

Well, since we're talking about Spider-Man on this board, I'll just say that if there is a new cast named (and we need to quit throwing the word reboot around here on practically every freakin thread)---Buster Crabbe, Johnny Weismuler, and a few other ones after them...all of them were called Tarzan...there was no reboot...it was just a different guy. And, with that new guy, a slightly different sensibility and a slightly different sense of direction.

If by defined roles that means the weapy eyed, Peter's a loser, Toby's getting paid by the ugly faces he makes, (with his mask off all the time) Spider-Man that we've seen.

If it's a new cast, I'll be there.

Yeah, but none were as good as Johnny Weismuller and Maureen O'Sullivan...

Getting back to Fantastic Four, I noticed Joe Satriani (guitar player who wrote the album "Surfing with the Alien" - about our favorite surf boarder) on the Aug. issue of Guitar Player magazine. They obviously try to make a tie in with Satriani and the FF, and kind of imply he's linked to the FF movie in a slight way. After all, the Surfer did make his career a little more visible.

I have most all versions of Tarzan on tape or DVD.....I grew up with Johnny first, so he'll always be my favorite too.

The wife loves Mike Henry though.:woot:

Especially since the first one was made before Hollywood started cracking down on content. Her wardrobe and their scenes together were pretty racy for the time.

(there's a) funny and sad story about thim in the old actors home near the end of his life. Thought he was Tarzan still. Gave the help lot's of grief.

Mike Henry. Was he the guy who played the dim-wit son in Smoky & the Bandit?

Extremely racy for the times.....I saw an interview with her talking about it not too many years ago...........the crack down was pretty much because of her....lol
