Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

We've actually had a pretty nice summer up until last week and this week....of course it rained everyday also, so that kept the temp down quite a bit....last week we were only around 91 to 05, but with our humidity it felt like 101 to 107 all week....and then of course the Tropical Storm Eric moved in and we've had excessive rain for the past 2 days....and it looks like we may get Dean as well.......oh well........the perils of the Gulf of Mexico.....

Send some of that rain up here. Got our AC fixed. :woot: It's cool baby, cool. :word:

Around the World Roundup: 'Simpsons' Edge Out 'Harry Potter'
by Brandon Gray
August 15, 2007

In a close call, The Simpsons Movie kept Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at bay to lead the foreign box office for the third straight weekend. The cartoon comedy's $24.12 million narrowly topped Potter's $24.1 million.

The Simpsons had mediocre openings in four territories. Hong Kong was its best start with $501,070 from 37 screens, ranking second beneath the second weekend of Ratatouille, while Taiwan's fifth place take of $145,000 was considerably worse. The other debuts were Thailand ($167,504 from 54) and Hungary ($134,303).

Among holdover markets, The Simpsons generally fell in the 50 percent plus range, aside from France's 31 percent drop to $2.8 million in its third weekend and Germany's 41 percent drop to $3 million (remaining in first place). The picture has some key openings this weekend in Brazil, the Netherlands, Russia and the Ukraine.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix pushed its overseas total to $552.7 million and its weekend was bolstered by China, where it recorded the series' best start there yet with $5.5 million from 525 prints, which was shy of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End's debut earlier this summer. Order of the Phoenix also launched in Turkey, with $1.3 million from 165 screens, topping all but one Potter pictures.

Most of Order of the Phoenix's holdovers leveled off with drops under 40 percent widely reported. Among them, Japan stood out with a fourth weekend take of $3.7 million, which represented a drop of only seven percent and pushed its total there to $53.1 million. France and Germany's fifth weekend grosses of $2.1 million and $2.3 million, respectively, were also fantastic. The movie also continued its strong run in the United Kingdom, off 29 percent to $2.2 million for an $89.3 million total.

Transformers yielded $16.3 million from 50 territories, ranking fourth over the weekend for an impressive $329.4 million total. In Japan, the action spectacle eased ten percent in its second weekend to $3.4 million, escalating its total to $13.5 million. The picture has grossed a whopping $137.6 million from Asia, led by China ($35.7 million) and South Korea ($50.5 million), though its showing in Europe has been satisfactorily big, but nowhere near its domestic level. This weekend, Czech Republic, India and Poland will be among the movie's final countries as its international campaign winds down.

Finally released across most of Europe, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer re-entered the Top Five with a $12 million weekend from 29 territories for a $122.9 million total. The superhero sequel played better than its predecessor in its openings but saw less business than the likes of Transformers and The Simpsons Movie. In France, it opened to slightly more than half of Ratatouille's second weekend with a still solid $4.8 million from 750 screens. It led Spain with $3.3 million from 498 screens, but settled for fourth in Belgium with $518,762 from 90 screens. In South Korea, it placed third with a five-day $3 million debut from 316 screens. This weekend, it strikes Germany, Sweden and Turkey.

Well I was just on the phone with my family in the caribbean and it just missed Barbados to the North so I am cool, but it is headed for Jamaica I think and is set to possibly become a category 4 hurricane. Looks like hurricane season is heating up.

If all you had was rain, you can smile albafan. :cwink:

Well extensive flooding is "alittle" different from rain....but yes I'm grateful that there was not as much damage as the last tropical storm that hit back in 2002 and dropped 35 inches of rain....

Now we are watching Dean, that right now is headed for Brownsville, Texas.......my school has already been contacted by the authorities to get ready for evacuations starting on Monday, so we'll wait and see....

Whoah, AD just said it might become a category 5.

You better watch this one carefully.

And this heat is a killer too, a few people over here in St Louis and over in Memphis did not make it through the summer.

Carp you better be careful man.

Even tough guys can be overcome in this sort of thing, remember we are not as young as we used to be.

Yeah it's a Cat 4 now expected to or could strengthen to around 155 in a day or so. Yikes.

Yeah but once its over the Yucatan Pen, it will hit more shallow water, but its going to be a big sucker no matter what happens....

If it keeps heading the way the say and the eye goes over Brownsville we'll be ok.....if it moves north, and ends up north or Corpus.....I'm in trouble because we won't get the eye, but we'll get the dirty (NE side) of the hurricane and we are screwed.....

So Albafan,

What's the verdict? Are we going to get hit or not?

It depends on the high over the south.....if it slowly moves out, then we are in good shape....if it moves out this weekend.....we are in trouble...

If you were a betting woman,......or to rely on what almost every old show used to call ...your female intuition.....what do you think? After all we're not too far from each other.

I would watch over the next few days up until Tuesday morning at its northern track....if it tracks north above Corpus, then we are probably in for some very nasty weather....if it tracks with the eye going through say Matagorda Bay, we are in REAL TROUBLE ..... anything north of Matagorda Bay to us getting the eye will spell trouble for Houston....we'll get the dirty side of the storm, tornadoes, rain, etc.....if I were in Evacuation zones A, B, C or even D I would seriously think about evacuation.....if its the eye......Evacuation zone D is probably ok.....but I'd evacuate for sure in A and B....

So really watch the track northward.....its tracking almost due west right now....if it starts to pull north, then we are most definitely in for some wicked weather....

I am glad that Bourne Ultimatum is doing so well ($163.8 mil, 3 weeks). IMO, it's the best movie of the summer.

The best movie for me this summer was "Rescue Dawn"....

The best movie for me this summer was "Rescue Dawn"....

Let me correct myself... the best movie I've seen this summer. I've read nothing but great things about Rescue Dawn so I'm sure it's probably a great movie but I haven't seen it. For various reasons, I have no desire to watch realistically portrayed war movies.

Once again the competition argument doesn't really work for me.

Very few movies really underperformed this summer. Many movies did EXTREMELY well despite the big competition. Few movies actually bombed.

How many movies this summer would you say were legit bombs? Hostel II. Evan Almighty. Stardust. The Invasion. Daddy Day Camp. Many of which were foregone conclusions to bomb. But what else?

A lot of movies are still holding on in their later weekends and are going to draw very well like Harry Potter and Ratatouille (will probably just barely get over the $200 million mark US). Hairspray which is now over $100 million and still drawing in the millions over the weekend. Even Chuck and Larry is still doing some strong business.

Ultimatum is totally owning the end of the summer, but still you have The Simpsons movie doing great.

"Rescue Dawn" is not a war movie.....it is nothing like "Platoon", "Born on the 4th of July", etc......its very different from any Vietnam movie I have seen....nothing at all like the formula war movies of the past....
