The movie was far from being a flop. 273 million $ worldwide and it's not out in Japan, yet.
More than the Hulk movie worldwide, with a lot less product placement.
The competition this summer was deadly and the movie's quality wasn't so high that the general public wanted a second view.

It opened in China, and Lithuania this weekend. Japan the 21st. FF did $ 2.5 in China. $ 16,000 in Lithuania. $ 9.1 million in Japan. $ 11.6 million from those 3 countries.

Well. They did not call it a "huge" blockbuster, but it was a hit. The top tier movies were the bulk, and every other movie chiped in. It's like any team effort. You have your superstars, then you have your bench players. Without the bench players, you don't win a championship. Without the FF's, Oceans 13's, and Live Free or Die Hard's, 4 billion would not have been obtainable. However, that is a positive sign. FF 2 will hit $ 280 WW. That's nothing to overlook. With the studio getting 55 %, that's $ 154 million. Plus DVD sales, plus cable, plus toy and product tie ins.

It was the first summer ever to start with three such huge blockbusters, yet Hollywood lost momentum in June. The month had hits with Universal's "Knocked Up" and 20th Century Fox's "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

To put things in perspective, apparently the only sequal which outperformed its predecessor this year was The Bourne Ultimatum. Not even Pirates accomplished that.

Spidey 3 did...Worldwide.

Domestically the studios jammed everything into May giving them not enough room to breathe. Spidey's ok against films that make 100 million or even 200 million but when you throw in 2 more 300 million dollar films in the same month forget it. Plus it was kind of long.

The sad fact is it could have been a top 10 franchise. The 1st movie sunk the franchise from that top 10 potential. I don't blame Story, I blame Frost since he was listed as the writer. Payne did an excelent job. And the movie has done very, very well if you take out the top 10 movies this year. You want to compair it with the top tier movies this year, then yes it has performed poorley. Compaired to the rest it has done excelent. $ 280, 285 WW is nothing to sneeze at.

Blaming only Frost and not Story as well is just completely ridiculous, unless you thought the direction of the film was well done.

But that brings me to the point of...choosing a good script is just one of many tasks a director has to undertake. So in that department, Story fell short and Frost & Payne just did flat out bad jobs. Story, Payne, and Frost are all to blame for a poor screenplay unless Fox decided every aspect and they were only hired hands.

I think that scenario was a lot closer to reality than we're ever gonna hear about.

SPOILER: Tim Story once said that he would never have giant robots in any of his movies. In this film, Galactus, normally portrayed in the comics as something resembling a giant robot, is shown as a giant cloud.
