Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

If you have seen WOTW, you've seen TF. Robots comming to destroy the world.

WOTW was slow and depressing with moments that dragged and an ending that many people hated.

All reviews indicate Transformers is the exact opposite.

Transformers will struggle to make 200 million. It has less competition which is good but the movie looks average...nothing special.
And certainly doesnt have the hype of SM3, Shrek 3, or POTC (which all took a while to get to 300 million domestic)...maybe ww Transformers will do better but domestically Im sure it wont past 250 million, the movie it self also doesnt look like the best movie this summer...the SFX are nice but the plot line seems kind of redundant, you know...been there done that

been there done that?

compared to all the threequels this summer a giant robot epic is totally fresh for movie goers tired of sequels.

^ The lack of female appeal will prevent it from reaching the heights of the 3 blockbusters of May, and Die Hard and Harry Potter will be eroding it as well. 200-225 is most likly IMO now.

Harry Potter will beat Transformers. IMO.

Transformers - 200 million

Harry Potter - 250 - 275 miliion

Mondays estimate is in. $ 2,361,000. $ 99,824,000 domestic. $ 3.1 million behind FF.

By comparison, FF 1 made $ 2.77 mil on its second Monday and had made $ 102.966 mil by that point.

There are plenty of teens, college kids, and older action movie fans who would rather see giant robots level cities than watch a boy witch fly around on a broom for the 5th time.

But sadly Harry Potter has a monumental level of hype and interest. JK Rowling churns out her very average and derivative stories of a boy wizard and the world laps them up like they are the best thing ever. Slick marketing through schools, bookshop window displays, newspaper stories and the appeal of child-aimed escapist entertainment with spells and monsters ensures these vastly over-rated movies will be a success, even though they have nothing new to say at all.

Why is this turning into a Transformers box office thread?

People are becoming so depressed with the numbers that we're moving onto other subjects. It's like that all around this board- the hype has come and gone for this film.

Transformers will make at least 250 mil. U don't have to appeal to teenage girls to make money.

LOL. That lack of female appeal really hurt (R rated) 300 didn't it! :woot:

I think Transformers will pull in about 300 million domestic, with about $140-150 million after the first 7 days.

FF2: RotSS was an okay movie at best. Frankly, even though I like the Fantastic Four I am glad the movie is struggling at the box office because it probably means they won't be so complacent on the next one, if indeed there is a next one for a while.

Unfortunately, the original Fantastic Four movie was just successful enough to lull the creative team into thinking they had actually made a good movie. Hopefully this will be a well deserved wake-up call.

Although ironically the sequel is probably better in all departments than the original, yet its doing worse domestically.

There was female appeal in that movie: 1,800 abs. :oldrazz:

  .... plus I must be one of the few who liked Gerard Butler in "Phantom of the Opera"

And I will probably pass on Transformers... Harry Potter is a maybe. I'm not all that taken by the characters.

Agreed on both ........

Anybody know if FF2 has opened in France yet? in the old days, it was thought that the Surfer was huge there. Also, I'd really rather Transformers beat Harry Potter.

It's opening in France on the 8th of August according to BOM.

But people had also already seen Spider-Man and Jack Sparrow on the big screen two times before. Transformers is something no one's ever seen before.
there isn't one big reason why sequels are bombing (relatively). the main reason for SM3 is that the script sucked. a bad movie is a bad movie regardless of whether its predecessor did well. the ending for Pirates 2 turned a lot of people off, including me. shrek3? nothing new. i would think the case here is that there just aren't many people interested in this movie.
