Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Vileone you're right there. Studios are cannibalizing themselves. 2008 looks disgusting in May. Iron Man has the best date for sure, but look at that month. It's too crowded. Everyone wants May and I can understand why. 2009 is starting to pile up just as bad. Look how well Ghost Rider did all things considered, 300, Night at the Museum, etc...Other timeslots are good too. I know Marvel will always push for the May-July date because #1 they have too per the contract with Merill on their studio films, and 2 because it sets up a holiday dvd release and 2 powerful times for toy sales.

I think what else needs to be looked, is that the sleeper hits like Night at the Museum and 300 didn't make all their money in just two weekends before they gassed.

I know this is a scary thought for the corporate masters, and studio executives, but you need to look beyond the first weekend.

Studios cannabilizing themselves seems to be a pretty accurate statement at this point. I would agree with that. Come September 1st, that would be the perfect definition of this summer movie season.

I'd say the overdrive and glut of sequels this summer has not paid off at all and has been a pretty big disappointment.

Studios need to get over their pettiness and realize there's more money in giving everyone some room instead of trying to show someone up.

Yeah, it was in a Time magazine article. It was about The Incredibles before or right after it came out. He said something like "Oh God, not another Randy Newman Score and not another Randy Newman song." Now I believe he was saying he didn't want another you're my buddy and I love you even if the world is not always good to you song, which Newman does tend to put in each movie. However, to discount all the other great stuff he does is downright embarassing, ignorant and disrespectful of someone who was a valued team member of the Pixar Family. I'm convinced both Toy Story's and the other movies he did would not be the same without his music.

It again , goes to show the kind of person I think he is. Slightly classless, unappreciative and not willing to give credit where credit is due.

Agent, it would be nice to have the exact quote from Brad Bird if you're going to criticize him for disparaging someone.

Here's one quote from another source:

The first was if this movie would follow in the Pixar tradition of John Ratzenberg as a character and Randy Newman doing music. Bird: "No Randy Newman." [Large Applause, Bird is bit taken aback by it]

Taken aback? That doesn't seem to me to be the reaction of someone who intentionally wants to be mean-spirited towards a colleague.

Brad Bird was bad-mouthing Randy Newman? What an ignoramus. When was this?
Not that Incredibles or Ratatouille needed any contributions from Newman.
I'm kinda glad they didn't. But if Bird was intentionally knocking Newman's work, he's a bigger jackass than i thought.

I'd say that makes him smarter than I thought. :woot:

EARLY SATURDAY & 3-DAY ESTIMATES: 'Ratatouille' headed for only the 6th-best Pixar opening after an estimated $17.6M Sat; 'Die Hard 4' tops $13M Sat; 'Sicko' strong w/$1.25M Sat, but it's no 'Fahrenheit 9/11'

by Steve Mason

SATURDAY NIGHT: Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille got a slight bump from Friday to Saturday with $17.6M, bringing its 2-day cume to $34.1M. The estimated 7% increase is better than the less than 1% Saturday increase for last weekend’s family film Evan Almighty (Universal), but less than the 18% Saturday bump that Disney/Pixar’s Cars got on its opening weekend last June. Meanwhile, Live Free or Die Hard (Fox) had an exceptionally strong Saturday with an estimated $13.35M, an approximate 26% jump from Friday. Michael Moore’s Sicko (Lionsgate/Weinstein) was up 22% for a $1.6M Saturday. Finally, Evening from Focus Features received only a 6% uptick for a $1.25M Saturday.
For details and analysis, scroll down to my Friday night and Saturday morning updates,

EXCLUSIVE FANTASY MOGULS EARLY SATURDAY ESTIMATES
1. Ratatouille (Buena Vista) - $17.65M [$34.1M cume]
2. Live Free or Die Hard (Fox) - $13.35M [$38.95M cume]
3. Evan Almighty (Universal) - $5.71M [$56.3M cume]
4. 1408 (MGM/Weinstein) - $3.98M [$37.4M cume]
5. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox) - $3.5M [$111.9M cume]

Note : Seems the box office slide continues except for Live Free. It bolsters my theory it's not JUST FF 2.

True I don't have the exact quote. It was in a magazine I was reading while on the treadmill at the gym. I just remember the tone of it as it struck me at the time. There's no mistaking on that one though...it was disparraging. I remember that much. It was at best, poorly worded on his part.

However, I myself found an interview with Bird last night after we started all this. In it, he claims he never read any comics. So maybe I was too quick to judge him on not giving credit. BUT...it does seem so eerily familiar/coincindental , - the wedding scene, the underworlder, Jack Jack- (super skrull) to not be familiar with FF at all.

But again, let's state for the record, I'm maybe one of THE biggest Pixar fans. I loved the Incredibles. If I let myself, a twinge of bittersweet feelings creep in while I'm watching it. It's really nothing more than sour grapes on my part over how good a FF movie could have been too.

And again I'm not disparraging Ratatouille. It's not my favorite of their offerings. I think the voice casting choice for the loser human character was a bad one. Now that I know he was an artist from the bullpen it explains it. He was the weakest part and a character we should have cared about. I cared nothing for him.

Having said that, and strayed off a tangental rant for a moment, I've always appreciated the high road Pixar takes. And maybe it's easy to misinterpret the written word and derive different meanings from different sources. I just have my questions about Bird.

What I have found from magazines, is they will use the wording of someone, turn the words to make the meaning go the direction they want....

I have come to believe, unless I hear the words from the person "themselves" I will take them as a grain of salt.....

Magazines are made to make money, not get information out to the people.....if the information is less than a fruitful read, they will turn it to make it alittle more tasty....

I will concede that point. However, one tends to think (I do at least) of TIME magazine as a little more legitamate news source.

That aside,...I like Giaccino's stuff. However, and I know this could open a big can or worms,...but after finding out Gordon Goodwin was involved with Incredibles(I always knew it had to be somebody like that), and,....hearing them just borrow whole stretches of John Barry's work,...it made me wonder how much of the credit does Giaccino deserve?

It makes alot of sense now that I know Goodwin arranged the Incredits, I just have to wonder what else his participation was. That's another area that's not exactly clear - credit wise.

115 million domestically so far? Can this movie make 15 million more to equal it's budget of 130 million?

I'm curious about international box office. Why is it so low? I thought with the first FF movie, international was half the profit. Does a movie just have more legs worldwide, so it takes longer for the money to come in?

Weekend Estimates Are In. $ 9 Million. $ 114,800,800 Domestic. $ 173,983,851 WW Thru July 1st. Overseas #'s Thru June 25th.

It still has 20 markets to open in. 5 in July, 14 in August, and 1 in September. So it has a long way to go, and allready it's over half of what the 1st movie made WW. Right now it is about 1/3rd of what the 1st movie made overseas.

That's a lot of markets left to open in. I see this with a lot of other films, too. Why the delay I wonder?
I noticed Spidey 3 opened in practically every major foreign market prior to the U.S, supposedly to curtail piracy. Anyone know if it worked?

I'm not sure if it helped or not....

What I do find strange is that Spidey is gone from the theatres around me......It's still at the IMAX, but it will end there with the next IMAX movie coming up.......

There are so many tentpole films coming out that there is no room to keep movies around. These new films are taking three theaters a pop, even in smaller areas. This makes for a shorter BO run and further diminishes FF profit domestically. Evan Almighty is a disaster that could be out of the first-run theaters in four weeks.

It´s sad, but now FF2 is 8m behind the first and behind where Hulk was at the same point. Unless it performs VERY well overseas, Fox might have second thoughts about a sequel or a spin-off... And a storm cloud may be all we see of Galactus... sigh...

I think we will get a sequel, But the surfer spin-off is seeming more unlikely. the surfers cool presents in FF2 couldn't even draw more money then the first movie. Its weird, It appears the same people who saw the first one, saw the sequel, no new crowd was drawn in despite the cool commercials.

That's sad because like this movie and I would like to see more.

I understand that....but I have 20 and 30 screen theatres around me....

they didn't even keep it on one screen.......thats incredible to me....

It would be fine with me if they use the Surfer in further FF sequels. After his initial appearance in FF, he showed up frequently.

I disagree. Had the Silver Surfer not been pushed, this movie may not have made as much as it did because of the mild reaction to the first.
