Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

I think Galactus might have "helped"......but the first movie seemed to be just too big of a hole to crawl out of......they had too far to jump to get a good hold to pull themselves out.....

Very funny. I love satire and saracasm. We're a regular SCTV here today. Because I'd rather be that than SNL.

For any of you interested in Spidey.......go look what I found and posted over in those forums.

^^ The story about the lizard has been around but I don't know about the carnage thing but it would follow on from the venom storyline.

No word on FF3 yet huh. Hmmmm. Tim Story must be biting his nails.

Heck they just need another 3 mil to cover budget on the domestic end.

Tuesdays #'s are in. FF 2 $ 127,644,000 dom. $ 232,375,685 WW. TF's $ 233,700,000 dom. $ 380,357,283 WW. HP $ 159,321,000 dom. $ 352,321,000 WW. All #'s theu 7-17.

I like it when Carpy gets tough....makes me wish I was in WWI with him by my side. ;)

When I was in the army at 6'6, 284 pounds, I was the meanist S.O.B. you've ever seen. Lot's of guys wanted to hang with the Carp Man. :woot: I've calmed down a lot from when I was 18. I can still go with the best, and my mouth is just as big as it ever was, if I had to. If I could not beat you down physicaly, I could shout you down. Make you feel like a worm.

Well, all I know is right now Sony is already having meetings and is projecting to release Spidey 4 in 2010 and I´m not hearing a peep about FF3.

It's still early. Don't go trying to start something. There will be a 3. Book it. If FF 2 had made close to 900 million WW, and close to 3 billion as a franchise, they would have allready anounced FF 3 too. 2 different arguments entirely.

When did you serve? Were you in Nam? My Dad was in Korea. Played in the band. Did USO shows....backed up people like Bob Hope, Jerry Colona, Jack Benny. Had some pretty good stories of those days.

If they do that however....it would seem like they're just phoning them in. Not really doing something they feel good about. Trying to second guess the fans. I heard the Zucker brothers say something years ago that I believe is a good formula for success...."make something you'd like to see....do it to make yourself happy first." I think that's usually a good way to go.

Looks like it's going to trickle away about a half a million shy of $130. It'll be so close.

I laughed at this. Literally.

Out loud. :woot:

*sighs* i feel ill......

Well the first movie may have hurt them with the fanboys but they knew what they could do to fix that, as I said who cares about the critics. You had basically the same turnout the first weekend so what explains the fall off.

They are going to end up about 25 million lower on the domestic front.

Where did they lose that 25 million. They lost it in the crucible of this summers heavy hitters siphoning off the BO.

Both Spiderman and Shrek and Evan Almighty pulled from their target.

But If they had opened huge the first week they would have been ok.

A week before the release the internet buzz turned on them and tracking for the movie actually fell 20 million dollars or so according to excel himself.

They were at 55 one week and were increasing like 10 million a week in the last month and got up to like 60. Tracking fell to 40 and they got like 60 million or so at the BO. if they had stayed at 60 maybe they would have got 80.

However the bad negative buzz that they were running from all year hit.

And what was that about, well who would have thunk it, it was the stink surrounding Galactus and the runtime and the fear that the movie was dumbed down. I loved that it was PG but why the shorter than shrek runtime, that is embarrassing.

So they decided to save 10 to 15 million to do Galactus and the film right and now they are going to lose 25 on the domestic front and maybe more elsewhere.

I kept saying Tim Story and Fox ain't crazy they would not mess up Galactus but Ioan was right all along; there was a presence of Galactus, cause what they showed was crap.

But I guess I am being too hard on them as this film was not about the coming of Galactus but the Silver Surfer. After all he is such a cool character. :whatever:

Don't they get it that SS is not a villain. So it should have been a two parter cause most people know the SS is not a villain.

They had time to fix all this but no doubt they felt the 40 plus years of history, the hardcore fans who would feed the buzz were irrelevant.

No wonder the unwashed :cwink: (the infamous Memflix) dumped on them.

They should have just stuck with Jack and Stan's story.

I gotta get away for a while, I am slipping back into negativity and I have to stay strong, hope for the 130 million and that they can somehow fix this mess with the next movie.

He sure did. It would be boaringggggggggggggggg if we all thought alike. You don't have to translate the meaning of my words. They are very clear. I tell it like it is, as I percieve it. If I like you, I'll tell you so. If I think your a jerk, I'll tell you so. If I think your an *******, I'll tell you so. Plain and simple.

heh.........I actually never quite go with personas that are flaunted out there as being the true persona.....I tend to look at consistency of everyday posting to make that call.....:cwink:

I shall try and monitor my persona/posts. Actually, it's too tiring to be unreal. I pretty much let it hang out,...except I try to soften things a little more than I might have a few years ago.

Fantastic Four was also released in the midst of a competitive and crowded summer movie season. To me that's not a strong excuse.

They generally made the same movie as the first one without making any of the severe changes they promised they would. Just another mediocre disappointment and low-brow kiddie crap.

Just like Tomb Raider, they were lucky the first movie did as well as it did. They got lucky, (so did AVP that matter). Then they made a sequel, without making some dramatic improvements, and it does even worse.

Who cares about the critics? Believe it or not the studios and people who fund these things do.

When Spider-man 2 became one of the best reviewed movies of 2004, Sony didn't have this, "who cares about the critics, COME SEE OUR MOVIE ANYWAY!" attitude. They wore the reviews like a badge of honor and integrated them heavily into the post release marketing.

hopefully they've realized that.. but i doubt it...
just stop the F4 movies...please -_-

Well think about it. They did the exact opposite with the second movie. They took that direction and pushed it even further.

I remember a QnA in Wizard magazine with Michael Chiklis. Point black they ask him if we are going to see any kind of cool tussle or fight between The Thing and Silver Surfer.

Chiklis's best response is that in the movie we will see a humorous exchange of powers between Torch and The Thing. Which really had nothing to do with the question that was asked.

But that's kind of the point. Not once in the movie did Silver Surfer ever get into it with Thing or really the FF in general. Thing should've tried to clobber him at least once.

^ That's why I still feel The Thing should have been CGI. Chiklis looked like a man in a suit. Sure the suit was better than in the 1st film but I still think CGI would have made the Thing more useable in these films instead of always standing still and doing nothing. Or when he is running it looks like he's wearing cement shoes.

I have to disagree with your assessment about the Silver Surfer. When he first showed up, he was cold, unfeeling alien that apparently had no problem serving Galactus and helping to destroy perhaps many planets filled with living, and most likely, intelligent creatures. We have no idea how many he helped kill before Alicia stirred his conscience. That was Jack Kirby's original take on him, deliberately inscrutable and enigmatic. If he hadn't got clobbered and fell into Alicia's apartment, he would probably have continued serving Galactus.

Even the motive he reveals later on is selfish on closer scrutiny. Save one planet, and his lover, but in the meantime help destroy countless others.... and remember, he did pick out Earth as a target without bothering to check out the general population. If he was not exactly a villain, he certainly lacked guilt about his actions up until coming to Earth.

Wow the EW review grid with a few B's on it.

While the RT cream of the crop is a totally different story.

I don't consider an average rating of 4.5 out of 10 to be an average or ABOVE AVERAGE rating.

What you failed absorb from my earlier post was that this movie got far more positive reviews than FF1 and by posting this link you have helped prove my point, particularly if you read through all of the reviews. There were several that even liked FF 2 better than POTC and Spider-Man 3. BTW, I would like to point out that one of their ratings is questionable, that being for Ebert/Roeper. I watched the show and while Roeper gave it a mild thumbs down, the sub for Ebert from the Village Voice gave it a thumbs up. In fact, he gave Roeper a good dressing down for saying the FF was always a lesser comic compared to Spider-Man and Batman.

Kel has also made an interesting observation about the rapid change of slates at the theaters this season. FF2's screens have gone way down in my area and that S-3 has practically disappeared already proves that the summer bookings were very crowded. And Kel, I am going to just hang out with you because I still say I liked this movie. It still is in the top ten grossing movies so far this year and doubt it will slip out of the top 15 by end of year. I don't recall anymore potential blockbusters on the horizon.

As for those who say it's a terrible movie, I say "please".... I've seen "terrible" and this movie has a long way to go before you could say that. To me, a spiritually bankrupt movie like "Hostel" from the torture porn genre is far worse. Could it have been better? Yes... I won't disagree that a better paced ending sequence and a longer running time would have helped. Personally, I still rank it at a "B"

I also find it amusing that those who loathe the movie can't seem to find better things to do with their time than to hang around this forum and complain. Conversely, I never see them post anything in Malus's thread that celebrates the FF in all this time either....
