Transformers Box Office Thread

not to mention, the original animated TF the movie in '86, was considered a "flop" during its time. It didn't gain recognition 'til later.

Tf cartoons came out '84. the TF marvel comics came out a little later.

Not really true. The comic books came out in August of 84. And, although the cartoon had a "pilot" that aired in a some markets a little while before that (I missed it... so did everyone I know) the cartoon series came out a couple of months after the comic book that Fall.

No...I mean comic book movies. Comics have been around for 40-40 years with Marvel, and DC has been around 60-70 years. So for TF to be this popular is an accomplishment.

I agree. But it goes with a lot of what a lot of folks here have been saying for a year if not more... the underlying Transformers "lapsed" fandom of Gen-X and Gen-Y'ers was unmistakable. This movie would have to have been really really bad for it to flop. Even now, I strongly believe that if the names "Transformers", "Optimus Prime" etc weren't in the movie, the movie would be a lot less successful.

Same exact movie starring some robot named "Leader-1" and differently named robots = not (as) successful... I believe.

Not true! My copy of TRANSFORMERS comic book #1 is from September of 1984 :cwink:

Ha ha. :yay: Yeah, so is mine. But we all know comics came out a month or more before the month listed on their number (is it still that way today?... it is with some magazines.). In fact, right on the inside is a huge "Coming This Summer!" coming soon ad for The Last Starfighter which came out in July of 84!

I know hahaha . . . sorry, didn't mean to call you a liar :)

Which is why I keep saying, over and over again, TF2 needs a much better script or it will suffer at the B.O.

I think it was Spielberg who pushed for the "humor" in TF.

Well, The original G1 is well received because of the characters (and voice actors) and story lines and the descent animation (same reason why we hate Gobots). So, Bay, I think, need to study these characters very well so that he can become a real fan (I don't know how much a fan you can be if you just watch 15 min of the '86 TF movie). Because of the success of the movie, I think he needs to get into what made this robots popular in the first place- He has all the time in the world to learn more about TFs. At least, he know by now that this franchise can be a serious money-making business.

A little update on the overseas:

Domestic: $296,379,328

Foreign: $296,708,905

Worldwide: $593,088,233

It's now on the 37-th place on the Alltime worldwide list surpassing War Of The Worlds....18 of 36 movies are sequels.

Transformers" takes top spot at Japan B.O.

TOKYO -- Opening on Saturday (Aug 4) on 600 screens, the Michael Bay-helmed "Transformers" jumped straight to the top of the Japanese weekend B.O. with a two-day total of Y631.3 million ($5.35 million.) That spelled more than "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ," which took in $4.04 million over the weekend.

The "Transformers" figure is 16% better than the $4.6 million opening weekend for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ( Japan cume: $57.5 million) and 6% better than the $5.07 million of "Mission Impossible III" (Japan cume $43.4 million), both of which bowed in the same summer period.

"Transformers" also compares favorably with Bay's previous smash "Armageddon," which opened in Japan with $5.87 million and went on to make $114 million in 1998. With the Japanese exhibition circuit considerably smaller than today, "Armageddon" had a lesser number of prints.

Looking at the strong early numbers, and the higher than expected female auds, distributor United International Pictures is predicting a $59 million final tally for "Transformers."

Hey Kargo,
Why would Armageddon ($114m) do better than TF (predicted $59m) in japan, almost twice?

Well i think the prediction for TF is a little soft, meaning it's better to make a modest prediction and look smart then to predict a movie would make 100 and it doesnt...but the boxoffice back then 10 years ago was different,a lot less movies and no frontloadedness so steadilly Armaggedon made tons of money...TF has Harry Potter and a lot of others movies to compete with and plus the movie has been out pirated for weeks ,so that takes something from the gross also.

Monday estimates.

9. TRANSFORMERS
Paramount (DreamWorks) $930,000 -52% / $384 $297,309,000 / 35

Which means TF won't hit $300 until the end of Thursday.

Congrats again. 300 million domestic? WTF that is amazing and way beyond what I thought this film could do. Nice Avvy Erzengel.

Tie that in with the overseas totals so far and you have a very nice $592 million..:wow:

Although I didn't think TF was the greatest film ever. I did enjoy it. I'm happy to see it succeed at the box office and make it into the $300 million club.

300 million. I remember so many people saying this would flop bad. Calling for like 100 max domestic and even 80 million max. Glad it to see it shut up all the haters. Transformers 2 should break a lot of records.

TF hasn't reached $300 mil domestic yet (it's at $297 mil so far), Kargo is talking about it's overseas tally, which is $300,543,633.

Congrats Autobots!!!!

I know he was talking about overseas. I think it's a foregone conclusion at this point it'll reach $300 M domestic. Unless the world ends tomorrow.
