The Marvels Box Office Thread

Although the pandemic caused some issues, Marvel just made some rather boneheaded decisions post-Endgame. Black Widow needed to come before Natasha was killed off. Eternals felt like a project that only got made to prove they could take another unknown IP mainstream like they did with GOTG. The Marvels should have been called Captain Marvel 2 to keep the branding from the last one going. Focusing and spending too much on streaming shows impacted the attention to story, VFX, and marketing for their film slate. Not having the writers & directors on both the shows and films work more closely together was another big bungle.

Isn't it called Captain Marvel 2 in some overseas territories? Not sure why that wasn't the case worldwide. Kind of like how The Avengers (2012) in the UK is titled Avengers Assemble.

Which I personally think is a much better title than just The Avengers, but I can go with either.

Naming it The Marvels was a marketing mistake. So I hope this serves up as a lesson to Marvel Studios and to all franchises. In China, at least, it is called as Captain Marvel 2.

Phase 4 / 5 / 6 should have been like this (in hindsight, of course)
2021: Captain Marvel 2, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man 3
2022: Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, Black Panther 2

2023: Ant-Man 3, Guardians 3, Blade
2024: Captain Marvel 3, Deadpool, 4

2025: Avengers 5, Spider-Man 4, Shang-Chi 2
2026: Doctor Strange 3, Avengers 6, Black Panther 3

I replaced Black Widow with Captain Marvel; removed Eternals, Captain America, Thunderbolts and moved up Blade, 4, Avengers and Shang-Chi. I'd keep the shows to 1 show per year, idk which of those shows would I keep.

I'm confused where are Eternals are going to show up now, if Eternals 2 is dead. And IF those characters teased in the movies/shows don't end up in a team movie like Thunderbolts due to Disney making changes and canceling their supposed team movies? There will be more casualties aside from a Captain Marvel 3.

I believe it is in certain Asian countries and maybe a couple in Europe.

I think Captain America 4 easily could have fit in 2024 still. Thunderbolts could have as well. Surprised you didn't have Fantastic 4 anywhere on there.

According to IMDb, it is called as Captain Marvel 2 in Bulgaria, China, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Serbia and Taiwan.

I put 4 in 2024 as the 3rd film.

I was also thinking of removing Thor 4, but maybe I should have, so Shang-Chi 2 would have come out sooner.

Right now, MCU's film slate is a mess. Black Widow and Eternals joined The Incredible Hulk as a 1 and done. Thor got a 4th solo outing unlike 2/3 of the Big 3, and Thor 5 is in development for some reason. Captain Marvel is gonna end up like Wonder Woman as a 2 and done.

I hope Marvel Studios doesn't get any ideas by making a Guardians 4 and Ant-Man 4. Doctor Strange 3 and Black Panther 3 need to be fast tracked. I don't think those two can afford another long gap. Shang-Chi 2 should be released asap too.

No Ant Man 4 is looking pretty safe after Quantumania!

I think there will be a new Guardians in the long term future with a new team but nothing anytime soon.

Not a strong start.

‘The Marvels’ Hovers At $6.6M Thursday Night As Stars Make Their Way To Cinemas Post-Actors Strike – Box Office

At $6.5M that’s one of the lower previews we’ve seen in recent times from Marvel, just one notch above Ant-Man ($6.4M, $57.2M) and lower than Disney November misfires The Eternals ($9.5M previews, $71.2M opening) and Thor: Dark World ($7.1M previews, $85.7M). The Incredible Hulk has the lowest previews of $2M for an MCU title in the preview era, but that’s when previews began at midnight.

Advance ticket sales of $5M indicated The Marvels was flying into The Flash‘s territory opening wise. However, The Flash‘s preview figure was higher at $9.7M off showtimes that began at 3PM Thursday.

The MCU movies it managed to beat in Thursday previews (The Incredible Hulk probably belongs here as well but I haven't found the Thursday numbers for it):

Thor - 3.2M
Iron Man - 3.5M
Captain America The First Avenger - 4M
Ant-Man - 6.4M

Also, Captain Marvel made 20.7M in Thursday previews so in comparison The Marvels fell 14.1M (-68%).

It's important to mention that Thursday previews started later in the past.

So, the Thursday previews for The Marvels may be bigger, but the other movies mentioned have less time on Thursday.

That is true, it is an unfair comparison.

That's a rough start... for more recent comparisons Guardians 3 made 17.5M and The Flash 9.7M. It did much better than Blue Beetle tough.

I still find it weird that the release date for so many films is always scheduled for a Friday... yet these films have screenings for a Thursday. So the actual release date for this movie is November 9....

I just don't get it.

60 million is underwhelming. But $30 to 40 million are bad.

Yes, they will lose millions at this point, but still Disney isn't going to throw away those eXtra millions. Also most Mcu films have a multiplier of at least 2.5x so if it opens with 30 million, there's no way its crossing the 100 million mark. It opens with $60 million, its guaranteed to gross over $120 million.

Quantummania finished around a 2.0 multiplier. Nothing is guaranteed. Especially if Thursday is front-loaded due to the die hards.

I think it is because not all theaters do Thursday/Preview Night releases. All theaters will have the movie on Friday though. I lived in a place where it was a small population, the movie theater didn't open early on weekdays because they didn't want kids ditching since high school was next to it. They didn't do Preview Nights either.

That is tough. The 3 lowest were legit Midnight releases though and at the start so that is understandable. Those are fun watches too, simpler times.

CM had the Avengers boost and their first female lead hero. People I work with didn't even know The Marvels was coming out. They also either didn't enjoy the character or not fans of Brie.

RT score / Average Rating
The Flash - 63% / 6.3
The Marvels - 61% / 5.9

Thursday Previews
The Flash - 9.7M
The Marvels - 6.6M

Weekend
The Flash - 55M
The Marvels - ???

If The Marvels would follow the exact same trajectory as The Flash it would end up with 38M.

We'll know soon enough.

If it did WORSE than both of those, there are some DC fans who would NEVER let you forget it!
Shazam and Blue Beetle had less than half of The Marvels' budget though. And let's not forget that this films belongs in the biggest franchise ever, while DC has been struggling for a while. I think it's the biggest disaster we've seen in a very long while.

Very curious to see what the Cinemascore is. It could go either way as the general consensus is that it’s at the very least a fun breezy time at the movies so audiences might be kinder towards this movie than the critics are and give it an A, but one could say the same things about Thor: Love And Thunder and that got like a “B” Cinemascore and it’s RT score(as of now) is a few points higher than this movie’s score at 63%.

But to be honest, even if this movie gets an A Cinemascore the movie’s opening weekend domestically and internationally looks to be so low that I’m not sure strong holdovers is really going to save this movie to become very profitable.

International OW looks to come under 60M. This could theoretically miss 100M WW during opening weekend..
