Brad Bird Directing Tomorrowland

Can't say I'm shocked as none of the trailers have looked that great, but like I said before I'll probably still see it because Bird has earned the benefit of the doubt. Based on trailers I've been torn on three films coming this summer, one is highly reviewed (Mad Max), another looks to be mixed (Tomrrowland), and the last one is a huge blank (Jurrassic World).
Interesting that you say JW is a huge blank.
I am getting a pretty heavy action vibe from it .
I hope its scary though.
Jurassic Park still scares me .

Jurassic World's kind of a blank for me too at the moment. I was really hyped for it with the cast/crew involved and the concept, but each new piece of footage (and especially dialogue) that comes out makes me more nervous for the final product. Looking forward to it nonetheless, though. JP's one of my faves.

I'm in the same spot.

More or less, I can't judge it quality wise. I've always been an intuitive person, and usually the marketing plays a huge part in the quality. Sometimes, there has been badly marketed films that were actually good but that's rare.

Jurassic World's marketing has been straight down the middle for me. It's not bad..not great either. but I know there's quality in there somewhere, but it's a hard read.

Same for me. I honestly don't get what some are seeing in the trailers. I get having hope, but it feels more like pre-footage hype carrying over.

This'll be garbage like I predicted over a year ago. Lindelof is one of the worst writers I've ever seen, and I'm not exaggerating. He should be writing for established franchises like Underworld or Resident Evil. Even Transformers or Fast and Furious are of a higher caliber than his talent.

Sad to hear this film is getting mixed reviews, was hoping this would turn out to be good given Birds track record.

Lindelof will be the whipping boy and Bird (director, co-writer, AND producer) will get credit for anything good.

Called this when it was announced.

i am not reading any reviews until next week when i will pay money for a Brad Bird movie.

Can they please stop with the mystery box? it never worked and it never will. its also the worst marketing strategy for a Lindelof script. the guy never pays off his mystery. and his twists always feel forced. how many examples do we need?

I wonder how much this is Bird ****ting the bed and how much of this is the studio ****ting the bed with their interference?

could be a combination of studio,Bird(like Ridley Scott) having no balls to say no and Lindelof doing what he does best.

The Leftovers?

From what I've read in interviews, what this film tries to be about and get away with is something other genre movies don't try often. Flawed and all, I'll be open to seeing it as a (hopefully) glass half-full until after I watch it. But I wouldn't start compartmentalizing blame, I doubt Bird was any less focused on story than he's known to be, so everything that ended up in the film was ok by him.

If I don't care for the film I am going to blame Brad Bird as well as Lindy. If I like the film I will give both credit.

I don't know. When I first about the project, I was so excited. Then when the trailers came in, it just didn't hit the right spot, you know? Everything seemed off.

If it's not a Fairytale or Marvel flick Disney is mostly miss in the live action arena.

Prince of Persia-flop
The Sorcerer's Apprentice-flop
John Carter-flop
The Lone Ranger-flop

Pirates franchise-smash
Tron legacy-disappointment but made enough to get a sequel after half a decade I suppose.

Tomorrowland is not a guaranteed success.

That was more than likely the reason Disney bought Lucas film and Marvel. They always struggled to get films up and running for the 18-30 male crowd.

Yep. They can't do live action worth a damn and the age of 2D animation is gone, so they have Pixar, Marvel, and Lucas Film to keep them afloat.

I've been saying for awhile that the best thing Disney is good at now is buying other companies. Other than that, they have merchandise and advertising up the wazoo.

Their own animation films are the top of the food chain right now though.
Can't help but agree with the rest.

Amazing how this years 2 biggest franchises used to be paramount and fox respectively, what's more, were built by those two companies and here's Iger just sitting pretty buying established things left and right.
I just find it funny because of all the actual flops and what not they've produced on their own recently. I'm also glad, because it's motivating WB and Fox to really step up their own franchise game and hang which means more fun times for me.

Here's comes another Disney live action original however, let's see how it does.

Absolutely.
I think its interesting how people have already started to blame Lindelof.
Especially if the design elements turn out to be underwhelming .
Isn't that the directors purview ?

Brad Bird has never made a good movie. He has only made great ones. Lindelof has arguably failed multiple times in the writing department, and the thing getting the most criticism is the script. I think it is pretty easy to understand why people might have a problem with him.

Also, I haven't seen the film yet obviously, so I don't know what it all looks like. But I love the look of Tomorrowland so far. So unless something drastically different shows up on screen, I don't see a problem with the design.

Speaking for me, I've never been a fan of the kitschy "the future as designed by the 1950's" aesthetic that movies sometimes try, all the way from the city and jetpacks/rockets etc all the way to the little neutron/atom symbol or whatever it is. So I haven't liked that aspect of it from day dot. If it's a good enough movie I can look past that kind of thing, though... whether I see it in the first place though will depend on the reaction of critics and board members though.

Which I totally get. I am personally a fan.
