Brad Bird Directing Tomorrowland

That's what I've been seeing as well. No agendas, just general disappointment.

I think Michael Bay movies could have agendas behind them, its the only big director that i can think of that everyone goes to his throat. But at the same time he kinda deserves it with the stuff he puts on screen

This would technically enter into 'agenda' territory.
It's deceptively easy.

Well he could make better movies no? or at least try to, hes been making the same flick for a decade, except pain and gain, at least for your self as an artist try to grow personally. But i dont know if Bay even cares about that

Perhaps, then again you don't know, but that really doesn't stop you from assuming he doesn't.

He could make 'better' movies(for you) or he could keep trying to cater to the fans of his films, the ones that have always been there. It's really no different than cult/genre directors making their ilk for their fans only it's so lucrative here that it's more easily seen as something else.
His art as he see's it is making a commercial good time and technical advancement. Not all 'artists' coven the same goals. Some students in my art school(animation) were really trying to make 'disney' movies some were trying to make funny slap stick, some were trying to go for moving pictures/paintings. The idea that any one art be held above all others as the standard for bettering yourself is tiresome imo. Do your thing, find an audience and speak to them passionately I say.

If a few critics in an audience of billions don't bite and would rather something else, then they aren't your audience. I for one see this happening with Bird right his minute. Then again I haven't seen the film.

You are a teacher in animation? which school? im an animator myself in games currently and worked on a flash gordon fan film, im curious professionally.

Look i like some of Bay movies, the rock, the first TF, i really enjoyed them. But im trying to get in his head and thinking if you want to invest 10 years of your life making a product that really doesn't vary from movie to movie. I personally would feel very tired of it, but at the same time if it gives you money and you have an audience then in that case why stop? i think he is a really really smart guy and knows hes audience and what they are expecting from him, but as an artist himself he may one day try to leave his comfort zone.

I think that is was Bird did but it didnt pay off it would seem, again i haven't seen the movie but for the critics it doesnt seem bad so i dont know why its not performing better

Basically Bay is not as stupid as some may assume. If he was he wouldn't be in the spot he is now.

I said I went to art school. Animation major. Like Brid.
Bay and Snyder and a few others did find themselves in art school however, I suppose that makes us all similar in a way. I'm no professor but rather a professional not to different than you.

As for what I was getting at. If tmr it's deemed that Kanye isn't making 'real' music but simply rap garbage simply due to it not being what we 'decided' is the higher art, it was be just as 'tiresome'. If tmr it's deemed all music that didn't use real instruments, or more accurately all music(scores) that didn't have words and told clear stories was the lesser art form, you know kinda the way we do with movies....
It's just not fair and in a way self centered to categorize art(not science) in this way. Some movies aren't about what people have decided movies have to be about to be credible. Some are just about really taking people for a ride or giving them an experience or a laugh or escapism etc or silent documentaries. I digress. It seemingly boils down to "Like what I like, and for the reasons I like it" and sometimes with the added nerve of "Because I'm learned." I just can't get on board with that. In art anyways.

As for Bay, it's not unheard off for directors to stick around for a trilogy, especially if you can contract your way into studio leverage to make/fund your own stuff in the process. As long as he wakes up every morning feeling inspired or challenged and looking at what it takes to pull off those films I assume so(same with hobbit).

As for Bird, he seems to have a real passion for this project and it reeks of his proclivities imo. If he and his fans love it and I mean really love it, I think that's an accomplishment. I personally think that's all there is for you can't please everyone all the time and it's pointless to bother trying. Bird doing that 50's stylized future with old mustache people and charming young kids and robots...more power to him.

Saw it today, and loved it. Felt a little preachy to start imo. Not subtle with the general message, but the film levels out in that regard once Casey touches the pin imo. Britt Robertson and Raffey Cassidy are both fantastic here. They both bring the energy and the fun. Both were incredibly charming, but in their own ways. I loved Britt's general feistiness. Clooney also has a good time here, and it shows. I really don't get the complaints about the third act or the mystery. The idea is sound, and while you can make anything sound ludicrous, it completely worked for me.

My biggest problem with the film is it kind of zips by. When the core group is together, I thought there was going to be a bit more movie then there is. But what is there, is great imo.

My ramblings

I don't get what the critics are saying but I enjoyed it a lot. It's got a lot of Brad Bird fun qualities in it. The action was solid and it's got a lot of comedic moments that kept you going. The cast was great and especially that little girl who kicked ass in it. If anything I disliked about it, it's that it didn't go in depth with the actual place in Tomorrowland, I kinda wanted them to explore it a lot more.

8.5/10

If you consider yourself a Disney movie fan from way back I suggest you go see it. I don't consider it a waste of money.

It is definitely a throwback. No fat on these bones. Direct and straight to the point.

I thought Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key were fantastic in it, their scene was one of the many highlights about it.

His entrance. :funny:

Plus, pretty much wanted everything in that store. :drl:

I saw it at a late night showing so of course the theater was full of nerds who were naming off all the **** in the store.

My brother and I may, or may not have done that. :O

I hope Britt Robertson gets more work in blockbusters and films in general. Thought she had an "It factor" when I first saw her in Life Unexpected.

You are so adorable.

She's definitely charismatic... could be just me but she reminded me of Jennifer Lawrence.

They are the same age, Britt just looks like an 18 year old for some reason.

EDIT: No, actually Robertson is 25 and Lawrence is 24. Usually I'd complain about somebody her age playing a teen but she's convincing.

Watched Life Unexpected just for her, ended up enjoying it in a Gilmore Girls lite sort of way. Thought she had potential, but she has done so much "crap" I was starting to wonder if it was just a crush. But she kills it here. Fan of this film or not, it hard not to say both Robertson and Cassidy aren't very talented.

You are so adorable.
He is. I am an embarrassment. :funny:

They were both born in 1990. Same with Emma Watson and Kristen Stewart. That was a fantastic year. :atp:

'89 was better. I heard there was one absolute ****ing legend that was born then. :sly:

Yeah that was some year.

And although the film didn't wow me or anything I did quite like the girls. Please somebody give Britt an easy hit already! Hell let her play an adult next time.
