Bradley Cooper to direct Lady Gaga in "A Star is Born"

For me Lady Gaga was definitely the star in this movie. When she wasn't in a scene I got bored. Bradley's Jackson was only interesting when he share's a scene with her, excluding "that" scene.

Question: When Jackson was dropped home by his brother after rehab, Jackson was standing outside the truck with a looooong teary pause then he said something really quick to his brother but I or anyone I saw it with didn't catch what he said, anyone know?

I don't have the direct quote but he said that he didn't idolize his father, he idolized his brother. That made his brother tear up.

I forgot the exact wording, but Greens is correct.

Thank you guys. Bradley said it too quickly. And especially after that earlier argument, the brother would've been touched.

I expected Ally to *dump Jackson later on after she gets famous and Jackson to become extremely jealous of her growing fame, but I'm glad that didn't happened. I agree, the movie loses momentum in the middle where the writing could've been tighter there.

Well I took a date and we both enjoyed it a lot. However, while I enjoyed the movie I thought the first hour was amazing then the 2nd seemed to drag, which was a shame as if the quality had remained the same this could have been something amazing rather than just good for me.

8/10, great performances but need a bit better writing in certain areas

Finally got a change to see this. Solid 8/10 movie. Cooper can sing and Gaga can act. How much of that is actually her on screen is hard to say, but I suspect she drew a lot from personal experience to do perform this. Music was pretty good too and will have to have a listen to the soundtrack in full. Having not seen any of the other versions I was surprised where the film went. Overall, probably a little too overhyped, I think the middle part of the movie dragged a little, but a very solid film all around.

'A Star Is Born' Soundtrack Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the set earned 143,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 18, according to Nielsen Music (down 38 percent compared to its opening frame a week ago). Of the latest tracking week’s unit sum, 86,000 were in album sales -- down 47 percent.

Gaga and Cooper are really good in this but the look on Elliott’s face when he’s backing up in the truck is absolutely shattering.

It's solid but I couldn't get past how toxic Jackson and Ally's relationship was. He made every single decision for her. It just made me uncomfortable, especially with the ending.

That's kind of the point though. That's been in each iteration. It's supposed to be a toxic relationship, doesn't change the fact that they were in love with each other.

I hope of a lot nominations for this, but I dont want to see that winning best picture.

I get that but I found their romance to be entirely kind of gross. The power dynamic was so unbalanced. The ending was completely egregious to me
that he would decide FOR her that killing himself is the best way to go instead of actually speaking to her, his wife, the woman that is supposed to be his equal about the tour and how he brings her down. Like he didn't trust her to be able to have any say in this herself so he had to decide for her. Like suicide isn't going to affect her for the rest of her life.

I agree the first act was solid/great. But most of the middle dragged and needed tightening/editing. Final act was solid again especially Ally's final song which I preferred to Bab's unmemorable final two songs.

I've seen Barbra Streisand/Kris Kristofferson's 1976 version and this 2018 one is way better. The 1976 relationship was eight times more toxic and Kris' character was not sympathetic to me, not to mention Bab's choice of horrendous hairstyle was baffling (yeah yeah it was the 70's but still). Also the 1976 version ended in the same way with the male protagonist :shock however Bradley's Jack made me care but in the 1976 version I didn't care in the least except for Bab's first reaction which was heartbreaking.

I don't know if I'd agree it's a toxic relationship. I think there's an argument that there was too much co-dependence between the two characters, both essentially being each other's muses, and he clearly had mental issues. But it wasn't an abusive relationship and there was clearly love between the two of them.

But that’s the point. He isn’t thinking clearly, he’s struggling and this was the only way out. It’s a selfish thing to do but he’s struggled all his life with it. It’s something he’s tried to fix but keeps coming to the same result, and after hearing THOSE words from her manager, it pushed him over the edge into a place where he couldn’t get out of his own head and think straight. It’s easy to look at it from an outside perspective but he is a man that’s drowning inside.

I should also add that it was all because of his hearing going. He just couldn’t deal with it anymore.

I rambled a bit but tldr he was lost in his own thoughts and this was the only way he thought he could fix everything. Whether it was logical or not doesnt matter. He’s an alcoholic and he couldn’t think clearly.

Oh I thought he became an alcoholic/drug addict to numb the pain/fear/worry that he was losing his hearing which also made him depressed prior to meeting Ally. Then after publicly embarrassing her (and himself) the one he most loves ...
he was triggered by Ally's ahole manager to off himself because he thought he was doing her a favor because he loved her too much to ruin her career

So I watched ASIB again and I noticed two things:

1-Jack asks Ally's manager whose idea was it to change her hair color and he replied that it was Ally's which is a complete lie because in an earlier scene he told Ally to change her hair and she wanted to keep it.

2-Ally ended up finishing writing the lyrics to Jack's song I'll Never Love Again after :shock where she wrote the first and last verses and Jack wrote the main second verse.

Soundtrack to this is really good. I will say watching interviews with Cooper and Gaga and reflecting on the film makes me realise how much more interested I’d be in her music if she didn’t have the Gaga persona constantly on. She’s an interesting woman but she comes across more like a character than an actual person, a strange disconnect that I can’t shake. It’s ironic she seems more real in the movie than in real life.

This movie deserves all the praise it gets. Its a heavy, thought provoking, and touching portrait of two characters, their relationship and how the music industry changes their lives for worse or better. Bradley Cooper and Gaga feel very real together, that is the heart of this movie and where it gets its legs. Their "Up's" are very warm and fuzzy, and their "Downs" are very hard and realistic feeling. With Cooper coming off as a heavily flawed, but ultimately good person struggling with their demons. They never demonize him, which makes him all the more sympathetic and Gaga's portrayal of someone in love with an addict. Strong willed and firm but understanding and forgiving, keeps her from coming off as unbelievable as to why she would stay with a character like Cooper's. They are both spectacular here, and I'll never think of Cooper as the "Guy from The Hangover" again. I realize he has had a very good career and is a great actor in his own right.. but I never really could get past that image of him and that character. I'll be checking out his earlier work in between (Rocket Raccoon stuff already checked off). Lady Gaga is also fantastic, I'd heard she was a good actress from other projects she's been part of, but now that I've seen it.. yeah she's a movie star in the making. Finally Sam Elliot (who I forgot was in this) was great.. I hope awards season treats them all well in the acting category. Enough good stuff has been said about the actual music in this movie set in the music industry... Bradley Coopers got a hell of a voice and I think this is a shoe in for any musical award in the future.

On the negative side: It suffers a bit of a overly long run time... I think the whole Chappele section wasn't really necessary to keep the plot moving forward, although it was nice to see him back and in a dramatic turn. It doesn't really hurt the movie.. it just feels like an unnecessary pit stop. Gaga's intro musical number felt a little bit out of place.. like it was rewritten when she was cast. The singing in another language, the drag bar.. It just felt very much in tune with Lady Gaga's image.. and it took me out of the movie at first. Thankfully Gaga is a good enough actress to disappear into her character once her introduction is out of the way. Finally, the ultimate fate of Cooper's character feels almost rushed over..and maybe even glamorized in a way that I felt kind of uneasy with.

All in all, A Star is Born is a fabulous directorial debut for Cooper and a career changer for both it's leads. It's handles its core relationship with sweetness, romanticism as well as the heavy and ugly behaviors that come along with it. l
8.5/10

The funny thing is, the persona isn’t really there anymore. It was for the first two albums and lingered a bit but you basically just get her how she is now. Also, The Fame Monster, Born this Way and Joanne are all amazing amazing albums that shouldn’t be bogged down by any persons.

I loved Gaga in American Horror Story - Hotel and I love this catchy line of her's, "You're cheap. You've always been cheap", and the way she delivered it with her hand gesture.

It was Gaga's idea to sing all the songs live because she dislikes it (which I agree with) when actors lip-sync because it's obvious and it does pull me out of the movie. Yes she's great with Bradley in this movie, their chemistry was fanstastic! I loved the parts with Dave Chappelle. And his real life daughter Sanaa who was quite entertaining on the breakfast table! You needed that part because that's when they.........

Yeah Gaga's acting here was very natural/wonderful and I'm glad that she ended up getting the part and not Beyonce whose voice I personally dislike but funnily enough like when she was with Destiny's Child (maybe it's the songs).

There's still this weird disconnect with her I can't describe. It's like there's this shield around her.

'A Star Is Born' Soundtrack Earns Third Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack holds steady at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a third week, earning 109,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 25 (down 24 percent) according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 61,000 were in traditional album sales (down 30 percent). A Star Is Born is the first soundtrack to spend its first three weeks at No. 1 in more than 10 years. The last title to do so was the soundtrack to the Disney Channel TV movie High School Musical 2, which ruled for its first four weeks (Sept. 1-Sept. 22, 2007). The last theatrical film soundtrack, like A Star Is Born, to score its first three weeks at No. 1 was Bad Boys II, which spent its first four weeks atop the list back in 2003 (Aug. 2-Aug. 23, 2003).

Lady Gaga Will Never Be the Same After ‘A Star Is Born’

And if “Shallow” is nominated for an Oscar for best song, Gaga says she’ll perform it at the ceremony. “One hundred percent,” she says. In fact, Cooper reveals that he has plans to sing the duet live with Gaga.

“We talked about that actually, because I’m such a maniac,” Cooper says. “I started texting her the whole pitch of how we should do it. So we’ll see. There might be a cool, unorthodox way we could perform it.”
