This movie deserves all the praise it gets. Its a heavy, thought provoking, and touching portrait of two characters, their relationship and how the music industry changes their lives for worse or better. Bradley Cooper and Gaga feel very real together, that is the heart of this movie and where it gets its legs. Their "Up's" are very warm and fuzzy, and their "Downs" are very hard and realistic feeling. With Cooper coming off as a heavily flawed, but ultimately good person struggling with their demons. They never demonize him, which makes him all the more sympathetic and Gaga's portrayal of someone in love with an addict. Strong willed and firm but understanding and forgiving, keeps her from coming off as unbelievable as to why she would stay with a character like Cooper's. They are both spectacular here, and I'll never think of Cooper as the "Guy from The Hangover" again. I realize he has had a very good career and is a great actor in his own right.. but I never really could get past that image of him and that character. I'll be checking out his earlier work in between (Rocket Raccoon stuff already checked off). Lady Gaga is also fantastic, I'd heard she was a good actress from other projects she's been part of, but now that I've seen it.. yeah she's a movie star in the making. Finally Sam Elliot (who I forgot was in this) was great.. I hope awards season treats them all well in the acting category. Enough good stuff has been said about the actual music in this movie set in the music industry... Bradley Coopers got a hell of a voice and I think this is a shoe in for any musical award in the future.
On the negative side: It suffers a bit of a overly long run time... I think the whole Chappele section wasn't really necessary to keep the plot moving forward, although it was nice to see him back and in a dramatic turn. It doesn't really hurt the movie.. it just feels like an unnecessary pit stop. Gaga's intro musical number felt a little bit out of place.. like it was rewritten when she was cast. The singing in another language, the drag bar.. It just felt very much in tune with Lady Gaga's image.. and it took me out of the movie at first. Thankfully Gaga is a good enough actress to disappear into her character once her introduction is out of the way. Finally, the ultimate fate of Cooper's character feels almost rushed over..and maybe even glamorized in a way that I felt kind of uneasy with.
All in all, A Star is Born is a fabulous directorial debut for Cooper and a career changer for both it's leads. It's handles its core relationship with sweetness, romanticism as well as the heavy and ugly behaviors that come along with it. l
