Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are partnering again as Hanks has become attached to an untitled thriller set during the Cold War that Spielberg is eyeing to direct for DreamWorks.

Marc Platt will produce with Spielberg, with Matt Charman penning the script.

Hanks would star as James Donovan, a prominent American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to slip behind the iron curtain to negotiate the release of a pilot captured when his U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia.

Hanks, repped by CAA, is currently shooting the indie “A Hologram for the King.”

DreamWorks declined to comment.

Yeah, even though the subject matter of the US vs. Russia Cold War has been kind of done over and over since the 80s, Hanks involvement warrants a look.

Sounds interesting. I just wish Hanks would do another comedy. I like his older comedy roles.

Great, just what the world needs; another US Vs Russia scenario. How about a Korean War or another Vietnam War movie to really put things in perspective.

Vietnam is even more played out.

true...let's do the war of 1812. Nobody ever gives a sh** about the war of 1812...until now :o

Personally, I'd like to see more movies focused on WWI or Korea. They do seem to be few and far between, at least compared to movies about WWII, Vietnam, etc. Oh and this sounds good. It's Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg teaming up in a Cold War movie (I love movies with that Cold War tone/aesthetic), so of course I'm interested.

Tom Hanks + Steven Spielberg... of course i'm interested :woot:

Americans don't like to be reminded of the first war they lost, that's why. :oldrazz:

But we won the rest. Sure, there's nothing left where we won, but we won dammit. :cmad:

I'm always down for Cold War era films. But with Hanks and Spielberg makes me doubly interested.

Coen Brothers to Write Steven Spielberg's KGB Movie for Tom Hanks (Exclusive)

The untitled Steven Spielberg-Tom Hanks Cold War thriller at DreamWorks just took an intriguing turn.

Joel and Ethan Coen have come onboard to pen a draft of the screenplay that tells the true story of James Donovan, an attorney who was thrust into the center of the Cold War when he negotiated with the KGB for the release of downed U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers.

The project, which was written by Matt Charman, was set up last year, but Hanks' attachment gave it a major boost in April. The Coen brothers' involvement only adds momentum to the thriller, which could be Spielberg's next project, with an eye toward a September shoot in Europe.

Spielberg has a number of potential films vying for his attention including a religious period drama that DreamWorks is developing with The Weinstein Company; Robopocalypse, a sci-fi tentpole set up at Fox; and Montezuma, which tackles the drama between Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and the famous Aztec ruler.

The Lincoln director already is attached to helm the adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's book The BFG for DreamWorks, committing to an early 2015 start for the adaptation. But that leaves room to fit in another movie before then.

The Coen brothers won screenplay Oscars for No Country for Old Men and Fargo. But the pair also are known to take on screenplays that they will not direct as was the case with the Angelina Jolie-helmed Unbroken. Hanks worked with the Coen brothers on the 2004 crime thriller The Ladykillers.

If Spielberg does make this movie, it would mark the fourth feature-film partnership between the director and the actor. The two previously collaborated on Saving Private Ryan, The Terminal and Catch Me If You Can. They also teamed to produce the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

Marc Platt is producing the untitled Cold War project.

The Coen Brothers are repped by UTA.

Let me get this straight. A movie directed by Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks and written by the Coen Brothers? Um...hell yes!

When you look up trifecta on wikipedia, there should be a picture of these three if they actually still put pictures on there.

This sounds like a must see based on talent involved alone.
Sounds interesting. I just wish Hanks would do another comedy. I like his older comedy roles.
Big 2, anyone? :oldrazz:

I don't know if Vietnam is played out, it's a complex war with a lot of facets.

Have we seen a well funded version from the perspective of the viet cong?
