Great chapter. A lot of story elements at play here, and I thought you balanced it out nicely. My only fear is that this Sapphire/Matt relationship won't end happily, and my little e-heart will be broken.

Oh, well. Keep 'em coming anyway.

Yeah that was my initial thought too. But then I remembered that this is a 'Hunter' story and I knew that I may not have figured it out so easily yet. He always has a couple of shoes to drop in his stories.

But mostly I think I just want these two to be able to hold on to these mutually satisfying moments. They have both suffered so much, it is nice to see them get a few moments of happiness.

Great job Hunter, good detail too. It does seem a little awkward at times with the two of them, but that actually adds to the reality because we all know how awkward these moments really are(not nearly as stylized and ultra romantic as Bollywood depicts them). I'm really liking this one.

I don't see anything romantic in that closing scene in Chapter 4. I just see two broken souls in need of comfort and human touch which can be healing to their souls. Very touching indeed, but I don't feel romance.

That was the intention, the "broken pieces" coming together to form a brief whole.

Chapter 5

When Matt woke, Sapphire was gone, he got up and looked in the mirror shaking his head, crossing the line into a personal relationship with someone involved in an ongoing case was not smart but he wasn't completely sure he cared.

When he arrived at the precinct he saw NDX talking to a very animated Cmill.

Matt: " What's going on ? "

Cmill spun around.

Cmill: " What's going on ? Oh how about another girl from my business getting iced ? Taylor Bliss got a bullet through her head last night, straight up sniper kill "

NDX: " Why don't you step into the side office here so we can talk in private ? "

Cmill caught his breath and agreed to sit down in the office, Matt closed the door behind them.

Matt: " So....Miss Bliss, was she only part of your escorts or did she work in the adult trade as well ? "

Cmill: " Look, all the girls that work for my escort business put in time in the skin trade, how do you think we got so many clients ? "

NDX: " Guess it's a smart move, lots of rich guys with boring wives would jump at the chance for a night with a porn starlet. "

Cmill:" Exactly man, but someone is trying to wreck that and you guys need to stop him "

Matt: " How many girls work for you ? "

Cmill: " 4 including Taylor and my Misty, I only picked the finest "

Matt: " Names ? "

Cmill: " MILF extreme Dew K Hotti and the 54 DD princess, Bella Kupps "

NDX: " Well we gotta get those girls under protection, you as well Mr. Mills "

Matt: " I'll set it up "

Cmill: " I think I know who might be behind this "

Matt: " Who ? "

Cmill: " My ex partner Mister J AKA Jackhammer, We had a production company called 24 inches a day but when i moved into the escort game i sold my share out and it folded, he was pissed and we haven't spoken since "

NDX: " He couldn't make it in the business without you ? 2

Cmill: " Nah, I was the good looking brother with the skills, he just had the other 12 inches, we got some hits with "Chocolate rods do hot bods" and "Brothers gape mothers" but i had more advanced plans than being a stunt dick "

Matt: " so he didn't make enough from his cut of the business to live well ? "

Cmill: " He's a gambler and had a lot of debts, that's why he hates me, when the business folded not only did he lose his job but he needed a new one to pay off what he owed, without the tools needed for high end work he turned to the niche' end of porn "

NDX: " Niche' ? "

Cmill: " Yeah, there's a small but lucrative market for black on black gay porn and he got a job with one of the main companies, so you can see why he hates me "

NDX : " Poor bastard "

Cmill: " Hey, it was either that or a coffin if you catch my drift. "

Matt: " If you want this to end I have an idea but it wont be easy "

Cmill: " Shoot "

Matt: " We hide the girls and use you as bait "

Cmill thought for a moment.

Cmill: " ok, lets do this, whats the plan ? "

Matt: " You stay here, we collect the girls and move them to a safe house, then we send some cops to your place undercover as workmen, this will give you an excuse to book into a hotel for a few days where we can better cover you "

As Matt finished his sentence there was a commotion in the main body of the precinct, they told Cmill to stay put and went to check it out, when they got to the front desk Byrd was standing there with his two goons and another heavy set man, yelling at the officer on the front desk.

NDX: " Hey! what's the problem ? "

Byrd: " Well as i live and breathe, the problem is standing right next to you, this psycho here "

He pointed at Matt.

Byrd: " Gi Joe here attacked myself and my associates yesterday, all under some delusional idea that he was protecting a very good female friend of mine "

Matt: " you beat all your friends ? "

Byrd: " See ? this guy is nuts, i never touched you.......did I Sapphire ? "

Matt's eyes sharpened as Sapphire stepped out from behind the large 3rd man.

Sapphire: " No baby....you always treat me great "

Her voice sounded shaky but her face was stern.

Byrd: " See ? Now I want to press charges "

NDX put his hand out to stop Matt moving forward.

NDX: " Sure, come this way "

NDX ushered Byrd into a room where they talked for a few moments, Matt never took his eyes off Sapphire the whole time, as she stared at the floor........A couple of minutes later Byrd emerged and walked straight past his guys and Sapphire.

Byrd: " Lets go "

As they left Matt turned to NDX.

Matt: " What did you say to him ? "

NDX: " I just told him that pressing charges against a hero cop that just saved a little girls life is not a good move, especially since I am sure he doesn't want every reporter in LA looking into his business after they get some tips where to look for the good stuff from an unidentified officer. "

NDX patted Matt on the back.

NDX: " I don't know what is going on with you and that girl but you gotta talk to your partner Matt, you're not some lone wolf anymore, you are part of a Pac and we look after our own "

As NDX turned to walk away Matt stopped him.

Matt: " Thank you "

NDX smiled and winked.

They spent the rest of the day getting the safe house and Cmill's cover set up, as Matt left the precinct to go home he heard a voice, it was Sapphire.

Sapphire: " Matt....I'm sorry "

she moved forward into the light and put her hand on his arm, he brushed it away.

Matt: " Don't...... next time i want you to touch me I'll pay like the other guys "

Sapphire slapped him across the face and burst into tears and grabbed at him tight, Matt held her as she sobbed.

Sapphire: " I didn't want to Matt, Byrd made me "

Matt: " How ? I could've protected you if you'd came to me. "

Sapphire: " It's not that simple, I have a younger sister "

Matt: "what ? you never mentioned her before "

Sapphire: " I don't tell anyone about her, when she came to me she was only 9, I wanted to keep her safe from my father and naively trusted Byrd, he set her up in a school and she's doing well but 2 years ago when i tried to leave him he threatened he'd put her into the business if i did. She was 13 at the time, she's 15 now, he runs plenty of under the table **** and he'd get a good price for her "

Matt: " 15 ? She surely is smart enough to say no "

Sapphire: " Byrd has a hold on her, she trusts him totally, she thinks he's our saviour, she has no idea what he is really about or what i do "

Matt thought for a moment and got hold of Sapphire by the arms.

Matt: " go to the cafe where we first talked, I'll meet you there in an hour."

He rubbed the tears off her cheeks with his thumbs, she smiled a sad smile and headed off to the coffee shop. As she walked away she turned back.

Sapphire: " What happened between us......That was real "

Matt nodded and they parted ways, he went back to the beach house and got a box from behind a panel in the back of his wardrobe, he took out a serrated knife, a silenced colt and a pair of goggles. He slipped on a hooded sweater and held his badge in his hand, looking at it for a moment before throwing it onto the bed.

15 minutes later he was standing in an alley round the back of Byrds apartment block , he pulled the hood up and scaled the fire escape, when he got inside he headed to the generator room and cut the electricity, he heard a commotion coming from the main open plan room where Byrd and his boys were, he pulled the goggles on, setting them to night-vision, and waited, 2 minutes later a man entered the room, obviously sent by Byrd to fix the generator, these old buildings were always susceptible to this kind of thing, Byrd had no idea what was really going on.

As the man approached the generator Matt crept up behind him and slit his throat, he then made his way to the open plan room where a couple of Byrds guys were looking for candles as Byrd and 2 others sat moaning in the dark at the card table, he took out the silenced colt and made his move, 5 head shots later and all 5 were dead. He dragged all the bodies to the basement and then left.

20 minutes later he collected Sapphire from the Cafe.


Sapphire: " Is everything alright ? "

Matt: " Yes, it's over "

Sapphire: " But...H.."

Matt cut her off

Matt: " Sapphire....will you trust me ? "

Sapphire answered without hesitation.

Sapphire: " Yes "

Matt: " Good, then lets go "

Sapphire: " Go where ? 2

Matt: ".......Home "


They went back to the beach house, Matt had no idea where this was going but both knew they needed each other, maybe as a crutch, maybe as something else.
As Matt washed up he stared in the mirror thinking of the 6 more dead bodies etched on his debt card, his face looked tired, even he could see it, he'd come so far from where he was, but you can't run far enough to get away from who you are......

He dragged all the bodies to the basement and then left.

Dum Dum Daahhh... There's gonna be some backlash from that one. Something tells me he better enjoy this night with Sapphire, because she may be going bye bye real soon. Cliche, maybe, but it would set-up our favorite death dealing artist to create his latest masterpiece.

that was a good speech, I really like the relationship between NDX and Matt. This element of the story gives me hope that there is some room for 'saving' grace.

The juxtaposition between the bittersweet romance of Sapphire and Matt with this....

Crazy. You do swift, abrupt violence really well.

There's something so tragically poetic about these two. I've gotta say, this pair is one of the best you've created so far, hunt. I think their relationship, and the way you've layed it out so far, is the highlight of this fic to this point.

Finally! I caught up with everyone else! Great chapter, Rob. I like the new details emerging in this chapter, like Sapphire's sister being the reason she couldn't get away from byrd. Matt is like a... killing machine. He seems cold on one hand and yet, he has a soft spot for Sapphire. It seems like... she makes him... human.

As for 54 DD Bella Kupp... Damn, she's HUGE!!
