He really is in a "dark place". I think this explains why it's only he and Beast. His accident look a hard blow to him, and perhaps he gave up on his dream of opening the school.

I always thought that a way of solving the "first class" dilemma (how Havok and Banshee aren't the right students) was to just say that after the events of FC, Xavier didn't officially open the school yet and took time off. That's why I was always in favor of dropping those characters.

I just love how the contrast between the future and the past will be. Compare old Xavier from what we saw (badass coat, maybe standing) and this guy here. It's going to be so epic.
