BvS BvS: Early Tweet Discussion Thread (NO SPOILERS) - Part 5

the hardcore fans have this notion... superman must be joyful and smiling most of the time. he must be invulnerable and strong inside and outside.

... That's who Superman is. He can be all those things, and still be flawed/have doubts-- Even All-Star Superman, for damn near being a god, had emotional range.

This Superman is victimized, depressed and afraid and angry. He's also willing to kill Batman 30 seconds after being blackmailed into it. This isn't a Zod/MoS no win scenario, it's him flat out giving up instantly.

Cavill plays him well, and he looks perfect. I dig him, and listening to interviews, he understands Supes a hell of a lot more than Snyder does. But the characterization is flat out wrong here.

The conversation about Superman smiling is just ridiculous. Is he a clown or something?

Traditionally, cb characters smiled a lot because they were very kid oriented. Even Batman used to smile a lot. But this is not a movie for kids and i don't think Superman should be forced to smile in situations where there's no reason to smile. Superman faces real adversity in both movies. He doesn't have that many reasons to be all happy when in these stories there's so much against him and so much doubt in his mind.

Read a little deeper.

He's obviously not willing to do that, and doesn't want to.

He doesn't want to do it, but he's obviously willing to. He says so--

"He has to help me, or he has to die".
"Clark, wait--"
*floating away*
"Nobody gets to stay good in this world, Lois..."

And look at the look on his face. He's obviously not convinced.

Does his conduct before and during the fight suggest that he actually wants to?

Guys, please us spoiler tags if you are going to quote dialogue.

That part made me cringe because of Henry's acting. I love Superman but those facial expressions were terrible.

I interpreted that as Clark going over to himself the ground rules Lex laid down for him, and trying to figure out a way around it. Thinking out loud, but not really declaring that that's how he wants it to play out or even that he's willing to do it.

Hmm. I'll try and view it through that lens next time, but it sounded really declarative to me.

Because he thought he was at the upper hand... why should he implore??? Man normally don't do that.

He's Superman. If a villain seems like he has he upper hand, does he instantly give up? Does ANY superhero? Even any normal hero, like John McClane or whatnot? Overcoming insurmountable odds for the sake of others is kind of their deal.

My bad! Totally forgot which thread I was in.

Well I can't post it, but Larry Fong just tweeted/agreed with Chris Gore's view of the movie.

What did Chris Gore say...in a nutshell?

Yeah.

Him hunched forward and floating and looking like he just ate a bad burrito.

So Fong effectively badmouthed the movie on opening day?
No, seems like he took Gore's comment as a positive one. Which...maybe it was supposed to be, I dunno. He did say he loved it, but the way he described it made it seem like a backhanded compliment to me.

It's like people didn't want the damn film. Holy cow.

It is clear to me, more than ever with this film, is that if you have a deep rooting appreciation of the comics because you read them and continue to read them, you're own interpretation of what they"should be" is getting in a way. This is true of all films that are released in this genre. Some fans just can't get away from their own perception of what the care should be instead of actually seeing what the filmmakers are doing with the characters.

It guess it's fine but it prevents fans from looking at things from a different perspective but character motivation in this film made complete sense to me, whether is was from the source material or not.

How many more movies must people endure of Supes being an insufferable, stone-faced bore? Seriously? It's two films now.

There's something called "balance", which some fail to understand.

Done 2nd viewing.
The smiling is very balance in this movie.
He is cheerful in the beginning... then doubting... the smile he gave to Lois at the the end is so honest n sincere... it pains me...

Yeah, that... seems like a weird one to retweet.

Yes, I'm a lifelong fan, of many different versions of the characters. And, even though I didn't like MoS (though thought it had great elements)-- I walked out of BvS with a big smile on my face. I had a great time, and characterization wise, the moment we're talking about made sense for this Superman... Even though it's as messy and contrived as all get out.

Unfortunately, that's not Superman as he usually is (in any version not specifically designated an Elseworld version... and that's not exactly what we should be going for here). It's also not Superman as he should be, or as I ever want to see him again. There's a line between interpretation and just plain getting the character wrong. This skews closer to the latter in a big way.

I didn't get ANY disconnection with how any of the hero's were represented or written. Givin' the rules of Man of Steel and this film, let alone the groundwork of the DCEU they are setting up, it felt like every single character would do what they did. I thought they were written precisely well in conflict...and I read a lot of comics.

I admit I went in a bit reserved and anxious, but still hopeful due to the praise from sf2 and roach and some others. But I came out with my mind blown. I mean damn was that a fun ride. It's like I'm looking at naysayers and thinking

This did not feel joyless at all. Everyone in my IMAX theater was pumped the eff up, so many moments had cheering and clapping, and the thunderous applause when the movie ended. Just wow.

I haven't heard this much crowd cheering in a movie in a while, and I love it. One of the reasons I go on opening weekends and not wait until crowds die down for better seats is this. The energy and cheering is what I love. The last movie I remember with this much cheering was ROTK, with so many big damn hero moments.

I also don't get the comments that this is too dark and might scar kids. I think that's an over exaggeration. Sure it's a bit darker than other affairs, but I wouldn't call it somber. There were moments of levity, though the story in the first half did move pretty fast (with questionable editing. Hey I didn't say it was perfect :cwink:).

But overall, I really loved it, despite some flaws. Even my friend who absolutely hated MoS and rated it lower than GL thought it was great, and thought the RT score was definitely not warranted. I give it an 8/10. Definitely worth to move the DCEU forward.

Jesus. Forgot about that.

:argh:Did I just read a spoiler?!

Why do people have to just dump spoilers out. In less than 2 minutes I got spoiled on 2 plot points in 2 different threads by people who can't use spoiler tags. I skip posts with tags & black outs, but people have decided that on the day the movie opens there's no need to hide anything. :whatever:

He's talking about himself in that last line but not what you think it means

A little under 11 hours left to go until I watch it and man you guys are making me excited despite all the stupid critics bashing this movie. I freaking cannot wait I have this feeling that after its all said and done people will look back at this film and say it was a classic. I remember this exact same thing happened with watchmen and initially it garnered so much hate but as the years past it's slowly becoming one of the more beloved comic book movies.

Welcome to our team. I feel like the movie represents nowadays. We r so judgemental n weak.
U would love it when u see it 2nd time. All the storyline are clear n organised. N the fights can pay better attention to them.
