Superman Returns Calm down and be positive!

Hello, superfans.

I've been reading this Forum for a while and I have finally registered just to say a few words to some of you:

QUIT MOANING!

I love Superman, I'm a big fan of the first two films and I really want Returns to be a great movie. I understand it when fans get jumpy about aspects of a superhero film based on their favorite comic books. But some folks here are just going overboard with negativity.

Let's look at a few things:

1) BOX OFFICE

SR will undoubtedly have a great opening weekend. Does anyone here really think it won't? It has no competition that weekend, plus it has 9 days to take money before POTC 2 comes out. Who cares about opening day/weekend records being broken? Titanic didn't break any, as far as I know.

What does SR have to earn to be considered a hit? There is NO WAY it will take less than $200 million in the US. I predict $250-300+ million. Then it will only need to take $150 million elsewhere to achieve $400 million in total. Remember - King Kong earned $500 million worldwide and only just over $200 million in the States!

POTC 2 will probably be a big hit too. Is it SO important that SR beats it at the box office? Neither Superman nor Superman II were the biggest hits of the year in 1978 and 1980 respectively, but they still took a ton of money. I don't think that POTC 2 will do better than SR - bear in mind that Pirates shares its opening weekend with the Football World Cup semi-final/final (though this will hardly make a difference in the US). Either way, I think both films are big enough to do well.

2) THE FILM ITSELF

I know that some of you have issues about various aspects of the film. Okay, we'll have to wait and see it before making our minds up. Personally, I am very happy that it looks to be a glorious piece of work, made by a devoted director. Let's just be positive and thankful that we won't get a botch job from Tim Burton or a soul-less action fest from McG!

So please relax and look forward to what I reckon will be a fantastic movie event this summer!

Welcome to the Hype.

first of all, you will be flamed by telling us to quit moaning, think of it as a welcome.

:)

Ha! I don't mind. I wasn't being nasty. I merely suggest that people see the bigger picture and not get bogged down in pointless negativity.

I don't expect SR to be perfect in every way. The brilliant original movie isn't perfect. I'll be happy if it's entertaining, well acted, visually impressive and true to the spirit of Superman.

I think that the forum is very quiet :)
Everyone is waiting for more info (reviews, trusty opinions). The neverending battle between "supporters" and "bashed" is on hold ;)

I have your back Matthras welcome to the Hype. I totally agree that any Superman fan shouldnt be allowed to moan on these forums.

I think you are right mostly, but for your information Superman the Movie was the biggest box office of 1978 and Superman II was the second biggest of 1980. Both pictures not only were the biggest of the summer or christmas season but of the whole year.

Welcome to the Hype. The complaining is just something you'll get used to. Not everyone is going to have the same feeling about this movie. Glad to see that you are a supporter though :)

Thanks, guys.

You know, I was sure that Supe was beaten in 1978... by The Exorcist or Close Encounters or something. I dunno. I haven't checked it out since my first post.

No film is perfect, nor will any film please everybody. As long as the good points outnumber the bad, then I generally feel happy. FF and Daredevil have their flaws, but overall I find them fun and entertaining (though I am far less of a fan of these characters than I am of Superman). Batman Begins is the only Bat flick which impresses me. I really like The Hulk. Judge Dredd depressed me!

Yes, if they don't share your opinion about EVERYTHING, they shouldn't be "allowed" to state it, right? Some of you are unbelievable....

THAT WAS CALM!

Grease beat Superman, GREASE :(

(1978 US Box Office)
1 Grease (Para.)** Jul 78 $96.300 m
2 Superman (WB) Dec 78 $82.800 m
3 Animal House (Univ.) Jul 78 $70.826 m
4 Every Which Way But Loose (WB) Dec 78 $51.900 m
5 Jaws II (Univ.) Jun 78 $50.432 m

I am sorry but I can't be positive when it comes to this movie. I had hopes for it but every new thing i see about it makes me think "What the hell are they on!". I am sure the film will make money but I do not intend to waste mine on it. I hope they will some day make a new film that does Superman justice.

Ah... but does that not just refer to the money Superman made in December only, before year's end? After 1978 had passed, it went on to earn over $130 million - right?!

Oops, didn't actually check if that was the actual final gross, but Grease still came out on top :(
