Can Synder Do a Better Lex than Smallville?

I like and watch Smallville, and think Michael Rosenbaum did a great job in the role. But did you see how they ended season 7?

Smallville created a nice, alternate, idea for a Lex/Clark relationship with a twist. It was great for a while.

But I hardly think that their Lex Luthor has set the bar too high. He had very little in common with the Lex Luthor we know in every other interpretation. He was a younger, AU version. Their interpretation of the character will be NOTHING like Snyder's IMO.

really smallville lol

zach would make a more cunning and intimidating lex

Michael Rosenbaum had several years to bring Lex to life. I had such high hopes with Kevin Spacey but I don't believe he got the chance to really bring the Lex character to life the way that he has with other characters. He tended to mimick Gene Hackman somewhat. I think Snyder is smart enough to know that his Lex has to be different and a true threat to his version of Superman. His Lex should have charisma that can draw you in but have a dark side that showcases his villainy. I think about Lex from the Superman/Doomsday in how brilliant he was in that he can cure deadly diseases but rather profits from the billions he can make from the patents. If I could revamp Lex, it would be his motivation. Instead of trying to kill Superman for a living, I would have him try and prove Superman to be redundant and discredit him at every turn and try to be his better in everyway possible. His schemes would never be that easily traced back to him. Superman would be suspicious but would never have that proof that he really needed.

the answer to the thread question.......
YES

wow that was easy

I'd love that too :)

It'd be the best way of showing that Lex can be a side character, instead of just a villain.

Come on man, what's with the comparisons? Depending on the material used, Snyder's Lex will be different from Smallville's.

lol smallville

Say what you will about Smallville as a whole, but Rosenbaum's performance as Lex Luthor was outstanding and far greater than any previous actor's attempt to personify the role.

Personally, I give that honor to John Shea. The way he plays Lex is EXACTLY how I think the character should be portrayed.

well when the past 2 movies lex's have been beyond campy he wins by default lol

so michael rosenbaum is the best of the worst? not much of an accomplishment

Yes, because much like Clark, they never allowed Lex to truly reach his potential. Lionel was a better villain than Lex ever was and ever will be on that show.

If anything, JOHN SHEA set the bar too high.

Yes. I would also agree Shea's Lex of the first season was my favorite live adaption. If they found an actor in between that and TAS it would easily be better than Rosie.

YES!

There is lots of room for a better Lex than Smallville's version.

Rosenbaum's Lex may have been the only good thing about Smallville, BUT the show's writing never really allowed the character to be as menacing as he could be. Michael's performances were great, but his dialogue (especially in his later seasons) was generally crap.

Smallville took the route of Lex being a young brother figure to Clark who was jealous of Clark's upbringing and family.

In Smallville, Luthor was never the brilliant self-made engineer from the Suicide Slums who created Lexcorp from the ground up. In fact, Smallville never gave us a good portrayal of Lex's incredible intelligence that he possesses in the comics.

Also the rivalry between Clark and Lex on Smallville seemed to center on their mutual love for Lana Lang. This was painfully obvious in "Requiem." I don't see a Goyer/Nolan script going that cheesy love triangle route.

There's so much room to write a better Lex than Smallville's version. As good as Rosenbaum's acting was, we're now playing in the league of big-time Hollywood actors, some Oscar worthy. There's much more potential here.

I hae no clue of what Goyer has done with Lex , but if I would add any dimension , it would be that he truely considers Superman a threat to humanity, which is a bit of what they did in SV , but kinda went away from that. I always felt the jealousy angle was pretty weak given a guy like Lex would consider himself superior to Superman regardless of Superman's powers.

I guess i've never been a fan of the whole idea that he feels that Superman stole his thunder because its seems as weak a motivation as Lex wanting Land in the Donner and Singer films. However I do wanna see a badass Lex .

yeah they should make lex believe that he's the only person truly and rightfully suspicious of this alien invader the unwashed masses are calling superman

Smallville's Lex was closer to the classic Lex and had some of his complexities. I was never a fan of the faux Kingpin Lex although I do think there is some value to that character if they go a more populist direction with Superman. Hopefully they study Maggin's Lex and give him some actual depth this time.

Smallville is just one major tease. Instead on consistently getting this guy...

They gave us a guy who just got pissed at his "best friend" over a "secret" and a girl. His greatest achievement was the assurance that Clark and Lana could never be together.

I did find it odd that they didn't make Lex a genius or showed signs of being all that smart. Though, the clones he has created have been said to be pretty smart.

I think that if Goyer has done his homework, Lex will be fine. If written correctly, Lex will not only appear threatening, but he'll be the kind of villain you want to see Superman throw in the clink ASAP. That is still the only gripe I've ever had with Hackman's Lex. He wasn't written to be hated by the audience. Zod was that mechanism instead, where the old series was concerned. Rosenbaum did wonders with what he was given on Smallville, and his Lex definitely seemed to have the kind of fear-making and dark, cunning intelligence about him that I don't think the other Luthor performances ever had. John Shea's Luthor was just so smarmy that you wanted him punched in the face. Not even by Supes. Just by anyone. As long as it hurt a lot.

Except when he didn't give a damn about Miss Teschmacher's mother. :cmad:

Michael Rosenbaum's Lex is easily the best live action intepretation of the character. I hope that Snyder can at the least have a Lex that is as good as MR's. But I think the greatest version of all the Lex's is Clancy Brown's from STAS. Give me that version of Lex and I will be very pleased.
