I wasn’t surprised at Iron Fist but I am by this. Before people start thinking they are just going to do Heroes for Hire series, I doubt it. Why cancel both and not immediately announce HfH at the same time?

I get the feeling that these shows don’t have the buzz they used to. Heck, DD season 3 came out today and it’s not even on the main page when I open up Netflix.

Netflix is just getting rid of the Marvel shows because of Disneyflix.

    The bastards.

I think what makes it worse is that its getting cancelled just when things were getting the most interesting. I wasn't a big fan of season 2, but it definitely ended on a strong note IMO.

I am legitimately shocked by this news. But this one seems more to do with creative differences with Netflix more than anything. I wonder if Marvel will pursue putting Luke Cage and Iron Fist on Hulu or the Disney service, more likely Hulu, at some point and merge of the shows now that both are canceled. I really hope this doesn't spell the end of Daredevil, Punisher, or Jessica Jones. I am currently on season 3 of Daredevil right now and it is amazing. I would hate to see that show exit. Honestly, Luke Cage and Iron Fist or my least favorite of the Netflix solo shows. So I'm less upset those got canceled. But that said, I do want to see those characters live on. So I am hoping for a Resurrection on Hulu

I posted this in another thread shortly after Netflix cancelled Iron Fist but feel it pertains to here too:

    Extending on thoughts above...

Distinctions That Make Seem Shows Done For Good: Overall, the distinction between an OTT provider and another type of provider (like TV broadcaster) seems to be key in terms of where Luke Cage may not be able to appear. Even if an OTT type service, I think a 2nd distinction could be whether Luke Cage is appearing on a subscription based service or something different akin to digital video rental like app store or Vudu? These 2 distinctions I find odd aren't discussed in these news articles swirling around that Marvel TV can somehow restart these Netflix properties as a season 3 to the Netflix series...

Cancellation Announcements So Soon and Direct: Does there really need to be some sort of announcement concerning cancellations so soon before even half a year has passed? Defenders I don't think there was an OFFICIAL announcement of so what gives?

Dwindling Importance of Netflix Shows on Marvel TV's Radar:
The fact that these recent announcements are so overtly official makes me wonder if Marvel TV is simply not going to allow Netflix Luke Cage or Iron Fist in some of their other still ongoing shows or develop spinoffs like Hero's For Hire if Netflix wants to fund them?? If Marvel TV makes lots of money on these shows without having to fund them as much as Netflix does I wonder if they're throwing away money before their other streaming service has even booted up yet...

I didnt even watch Luke Cage season 2 and wasnt planning to. Guess that wont change now. If they cancel Daredevil and Punisher I'm going to be furious but maybe Disney will resurrect these shows on their streaming service or hulu and improve them.

I will be surprised if these pop-up on Disney or Hulu as new seasons or even past seasons appearing on these if part of a subscription service anytime soon. Quite surprised.

There's usually not an official announcement of a series cancellation.

I mean for a long running show there might be a press release saying that this is the planned final season blah blah blah and all that.

I kind of feel like the Marvel Netflix era started really fast and strong and started stumbling a little ways in. I think they failed to keep all that early momentum.

Let's be honest, Defenders was a letdown. I don't feel like it quite delivered with what we were promised.

Why was the show even called Defenders?

Daredevil seems to be the most talked about, so I'd say it's really safe.

Punisher they're going to continue with season 2 plans and depending on ratings continue or cancel.

Jessica Jones, eh, that might be the next cancellation. It's fate is more in the air than the other two.

Wouldn't be surprised if we hear next season of Jessica Jones is the last sooner rather than later.

Despite enjoying the last season I'm surprisingly unphased by this news, and maybe even a little optimistic about Luke's future.

If I was Disney/Marvel I would re-brand Luke and Danny as a heroes for hire movie franchise. Lethal Weapon/Rush hour buddy team.

Movie budget would mean we can see some half decent flashbacks to a fully realised Kun Lun. Luke can have more dynamic acts of destruction. We can see both of there powers in full force. Not mention we would see a fully CGI'd Shou-Lao dragon. :word: :applaud

I can't say I'm surprised. LC had in my view only a half decent first season and a very slow and unengaging second season mostly hampered by a slow as molasses pacing of story and characterization. Which I will always think is a shame because of so much else the show gets right, not least of which is the "feel" of what a modern day Luke Cage show should be. But that pacing and some other creative choices stunted this show's potential from right out of the gate. I mean, music and culture should have been a part of the show... But did we really need a musical interlude every episode that brought the momentum to a halt so we could see yet another performance at the Harlem's Paradise? Why keep repeating so many character motivations and plots dynamics again and again? ("Not Dillard... STOKES!")

Season one simply had this swerve that yielded less in the last half than in the first half. A great villain was replaced by a mediocre and over the top one. It's one thing to pay homage to Blaxploitation films... It's another thing if you end up giving an impression similar to the worst offerings of the genre, and Diamondback came off like he walked off the set of Dolemite. Season two was just a slog. Each and every episode felt like watching a two hour movie where not much happens and it's a shame because the cast and the characters are actually good. But the progression of the story felt like things such as plot or arcs moved in slow motion or elements were repeated again and again until you were bored with them.

I will say that I do wish Mike Colter could be drafted into the film division. I think his Cage would do well in an Avengers film. Who knows? If Secret Invasion is the next big arc perhaps there are plans for Luke on the big screen? I have to feel that there are people at Marvel that realized that the issues with the show were not that it was bereft of any merit. Like I said, it did deliver on the vibe of what a modern day live action Luke Cage should be and Colter is more than fine in the role, so it's not totally crazy to perhaps tap the character and the actor for part in the films. Here's hoping.

Defenders was so rushed. That show was not earned at all. And the story was awful. I feel Loeb was in such a rush to make the same impact Feige made with Avengers and completely flopped it.

CW does a much better job with there superhero crossovers. There shows in general are probably even more entertaining than the Netflix shows when you average them all out.

Not surprised. Let’s be honest about it, it had its moments, but boy was a majority of it boring.

I kind of had a feeling the showrunners and netflix would not see eye to eye with the creative direction of the show.

Care to elaborate a bit? You are not the first to comment along those lines, on my part I totally did not see this coming, so I'm curious what tipped people.

Here’s a few scenarios I came up with after hearing the cancellation news.

    1. Isn’t it kind of bizarre that Netflix would kill two Marvel shows right after the Disney Play announcement when Disney said they would honor the Netflix deals?? Does everything go to Hulu?

    2. Is the rumor that Marvel Studios absorbing Marvel Television true?? On Loeb’s watch he’s had 4 shows canceled this year (Inhumans, Defenders, Iron Fist and now Luke Cage), plus all of Marvel Animation is fired.

I think Marvel Television problem was the budgets on the shows. Ike Perlmutter was a cheapskate and that hurt the shows. I can’t see Marvel recasting Luke or Danny but I could see Heroes For Hire on Hulu.

hmmm, well Eon 001 made some interesting point's. but the best chose would be to move to hulu for the time being it probably be best to reconsider the streaming channel and make a full on marvel steaming channel/ portal and continue the series there. if any more surprise cancellations happen.

truth be told since Net flix made a deal with "Millar world" they might be thinking they won't miss the marvel net flix show that much even they were profitable at the beginning.

on the marvel streaming portal the best way to run that, would be at least with more adult content is one would have to prove their are an adult's account wise I guess. otherwise there's still hulu.

It's a shame this is happening. but to a degree it's a good thing. if character's like scarlet, hawk eye etc can get a streaming series . that mean's they can interact with each and Charley cox can have scarlet Johansen as a gust star. yeah that may be pushing it.

But it's a Possibility now. Among MANY OTHERS

I think it's time Marvel should consider ending their partnership with Netflix and start bringing those shows to their own streaming service or network. Disney should also start uniting the movie and TV division as well. I like Jeph Loeb, but I don't like the fact that Feige isn't in charge and these two universes are in separation despite the claim of the contrary. Let Feige appoint someone he trusts as head of the TV shows, and maybe we'll have a true crossover between movies and TV someday.
