A&E Sets U.S. Version of French Series ‘The Returned’, Carlton Cuse In Talks To Adapt
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Hit French series The Returned (Les Revenants) is getting an American remake. A&E Network has nabbed rights to the supernatural/suspense drama, which will be developed as a co-production between A+E Studios and FremantleMedia North America. There is no writer in place but I hear the network is in discussions with Carlton Cuse, executive producer/co-showrunner of A&E’s breakout hit Bates Motel to take on the adaptation.

Created by Fabrice Gobert, Les Revenants was inspired by the 2004 feature film by the same name directed by Robin Campillo (English-language title They Came Back). It focuses on a small town that is turned upside down when several local people who have been long presumed dead suddenly reappear, having not aged and unaware of their own fatality. As they attempt to resume their lives, strange phenomena and gruesome murders begin to occur. “The Returned takes an incredibly unique approach, filled with suspense and twists and turns, to the subject of the living dead,” said A&E’s EVP and general manager David McKillop. Added FMNA CEO Thom Beers, “Having seen Fabrice Gobert’s original version and the success the series has had in France, we’re thrilled to be partnering with the team at A+E to bring this enigmatic thriller to U.S. audiences.”

The Returned is a hit in France, where it debuted last fall on Canal Plus, and also has done very well in the UK where it airs on Channel 4 as Rebound (check out the subtitled trailer below). A second season is slated to come out next year. Sundance Channel recently acquired the eight-episode first season for a Halloween debut, while Music Box Films is planning a January VOD/DVD U.S. release.

The premise of The Returned draws parallels to the upcoming ABC drama series Resurrection, which was based on Jason Mott’s novel, also titled The Returned. There had been speculation about the similarities between Mott’s debut novel, which wasn’t published until this fall, and the French film and series that preceded it. The rights to Mott’s book sparked a bidding war late last fall, landing at Brad Pitt’s Plan B and ABC Studios which sold the project to ABC. A&E’s The Returned is co-produced by the recently launched A+E Studios and FMNA in association with Haut et Court TV SAS, producer of the French series. FremantleMedia will distribute the series internationally, excluding the U.S. and Canada. The executives overseeing the project are Beers and Craig Cegielski for FMNA and Bob DeBitetto for A+E Studios. In addition to Bates Motel, former Lost co-showrunner Cuse is executive producing/showrunning FX’s high-profile drama The Strain.
So pretty much the exact show ABC already has planned for midseason?

Eh... I'd probably still watch. Especially for Cuse.

So there were a lot of premieres these past few weeks. Which new shows did you guys like/not like?

What I'll definitely be sticking with:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

What I enjoyed, but I'll drop if I lose interest:

The Goldbergs
Brooklyn Nine Nine
Sleepy Hollow

What I found somewhat entertaining, but probably won't keep watching:

The Michael J. Fox Show
The Crazy Ones

I found the pilot for SHIELD thoroughly unimpressive. Sure, the show will have plenty of opportunities to grow after the pilot, as many shows do, but I just look at all the people online who were heaping praise on it and I think "... really?"

I would have actually found it kind of underwhelming if not for the fact that it ties in to the Marvel cinematic universe. Coulson can improve anything. Also there are some purty womens on the show. :o

I thought SHIELD had the weakest of pilots out of the new shows I want to see. The strongest came from Sleepy Hollow and the Blacklist.

Unfortunately, Sleepy Hollow could lose a lot of momentum when it comes back from break in late November.

Blacklist was the best premier so far for me. It has some of the NBC twists that come off cheesy, but it actually did them well for the most part. Nice to see NBC growing some balls with this and Hannibal.

SHIELD was enjoyable. It wasn't the blow you away pilot I was hoping for. Just a solid episode that will hopefully be (the lower end of) the standard for the future.

Sleepy Hollow, while not bad, blew it's load in it's first episode. It literally just dumped the entire plot of the season out so now's there's no real mystery as to what's coming. But at least it did it well. I still have some problems with it. Enough that I'm enjoying the characters more than the plot and total convenience all the magic stuff provided to make this happen.

I liked Brooklyn Nine-Nine. SHIELD was dumb. That's all I've watched so far.

This.

I also watched The Crazy ones because SMG Is my life and found it entertaining but if they don't make it more slapstick 30 Rock funny I will probably be dropping it.

Considering how much 30 Rock evolved in its first season, I see no reason to think The Crazy Ones can't so the same.

I didn't realize the Crazy Ones had premiered.

I think it's going to be a one season show. Decent ratings, but nothing like CBS wants.

15 million and almost a 4.0 demo? That's better than decent. As long as the numbers stay good, I don't imagine CBS is going to be in any rush to go "No no, Robin Williams. We don't want you anymore."

30 Rock? Already miss it.

These are the best days of our flerm.

Thursdays on NBC are going to be weird. No more Liz Lemon or Dunder Mifflin.

At least we got Pawnee.

Based on it's premiere numbers, I'm betting Lucky 7 will be the first new series put in the ground.

And I'm betting at least a dozen articles reporting it will have a snarky "I guess it wasn't that lucky" opening line.

Really disappointed in Agents of Shield. I've never face palmed at so many jokes not hitting in my life. Just terrible

Really loved Sleepy Hollow and Blacklist, Goldbergs was decently funny and Michael J. Fox was really funny

Yeah I don't know why there was so much praise? Because it had two "Agents of SHIELD" from The Avengers? It was a ho hum and unimpressive. If I never watched another episode I would be fine. Didn't make me want to tune in for the second episode like other pilots have this year.

I already made the mistake of giving up on one Whedon show (Dollhouse) after an unimpressive first episode, and it apparently got really good after that, so I'm not giving up on this just yet. I'm sure they've got some good **** planned, but that just was not a very good pilot. I honestly think the people saying the pilot was the best of the year had Whedon/Coulson blinders on. Whedon, I could understand. I've never understood the fascination this fanbase has with Coulson, though.

I just like Clark Gregg on New Adventures of Old Christine. He's definitely a one note actor but he still can be funny. Not a ginormious Coulson fan though. He's not really running the show is he. Sure he got it started and probably got some story beats in there for the year but he's not a day to day guy is he

fav to least of new series premieres that I've seen:

Sleepy Hollow
Blacklist
Hostages
Agents of SHIELD

The only other one I want to check out is the new ABC comedy with Maggie Lawson.

About the first half of the first season was awkward, but once they start to find their footing and you get to the ep where Fran Kanz and Olivia Williams play drunk off one another, which was hilarious, it really picks up.

Michael J. Fox show was bad and very forced. I was confused by the subplot with the daughter. Apparently she re-did her video project and cried about how brave her father was. And yet it it still had nothing to do with Grapes of Wrath.

Mike Henry as this big celebrity? Eh I don't get it. He's a local news anchor. Maybe if he was someone like a Matt Lauer or a Walter Cronkite I could understand. Or if he was someone like David Letterman. But he's just a local news guy. I think he needed to be a bigger, more prolific celebrity.

I found the Parkinson's humor a little uncomfortable to watch. It felt forced.

OK also what was the point of that ending? He gets on The Today Show and is bumped a second later. So he's going to do what now? I don't get it.

The Parkinson's humor wasn't any more forced than it was on Curb. It's not something he's going to tiptoe around or act like "Oh, what a horrible has happened to me." I respect it. I don't think it's something they're always going to focus so heavily on, I think they've said that much.
