Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 7

I'm not gunna say its all because she has a vagina
but this movie (or the trailer, rather) does seem to receive a whole lot of criticism for her acting where other movies didn't really
Go watch the first Cap trailer, or Strange, or Panther, and you're not gunna see a whole lot of depth or variety to their acting in a 2 minute trailer
but with this movie its "ah she sucks at acting, and she doesn't wanna be there, blah blablahhh"... so while I haven't done the research into the reasons, it does seem kinda weird

I know, like seriously, she's one of the few actors from the MCU that have won an Oscar already, but no, she's just bland - and doesn't smile enough. :whatever:

Me: I'm not sold on Larson

You, quoting the post where I say I'm not sold on Larson: Stop trying to marginalize people who aren't sold on Larson!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And sorry but yeah, you'll never be able to convince me that a man would be receiving the same amount of nitpicky criticism.

Clearly you haven't spent time around this genre if you don't think these characters come under plenty of fan scrutiny.

The criticisms of Larson are not nitpicky. The people trying to marginalize those opinions are.

Winning an Oscar is one thing. Playing a super heroine is another. It's entirely possible it's not the right fit of a role for her. Everything she's done prior to this is not even remotely similar.

Remember that these CBM's are the new "action" genre.

And she was right of course. There isn't a more insulting thing to say to a woman, not counting actual insults, then telling them to smile. I've experienced it first hand from a total stranger in a park while sitting on a bench with my bestie. It was like a verbal slap in the face.

Smiling isn't the problem here, it's a very bland, stilted performance, where she has the same expression in literary every scene in the trailer. Again, it could be just the way it was cut, or these scenes may not even be in the final cut of the movie, but this isn't about sexism. At least not from me.

For example, that "noble warrior heroes" line she pits at Fury in the car ride falls so flat and awkward.

that, admittedly, did sound bad
but it sounded like bad writing, not her line delivery

the one criticism I do agree with [somewhat] is her voice is a bit higher and softer than I expected, it honestly doesn't even sound like her
everything else Ive seen her in she had a stronger and slightly deeper voice

I love that line. You'll notice that my Occupation is currently Noble Warrior-Hero

I'm personally very glad to see new and diverse styles of acting in movies that have traditionally not focused on great acting.

*which is not, btw, an insult towards any of the fantastic actors and actresses in the MCU*

I love 80's action heroes and they were by no means great actors. But there is an essence to them, a certain screen presence that helps define their characters.

Wow, I just can't even believe how great that trailer was. The first one was fine, but this was incredible. I see a huge blockbuster in the making with this film.
I expect a bit more from the box office after that trailer.

Yeah, so many had serious screen presence and I can see them being remembered longer than some of the current actors.

Agreed, it seems like a hard line to make work well.

Yup.

‘Monday Night Football’ Ratings Up From Season Low & 2017; Eagles’ Playoff Hopes Rise

“Last night’s game peaked with a 9.3 MM rating in the 9:30 – 9:45 PM ET slot, before the latest look at the Brie Larson-led Marvel movie made its appearance. All added up, ESPN won the night overall on both cable and broadcast, where NBC was the top Big 4 net.”

Pretty cool that Captain Marvel had a notable impact on viewership.

Trailer lines may not even be in the movie or alternate takes are used. Or ....the movie may give you context as to why she says it that way. There's been plenty weird awkward lines in these mcu trailers I for one have faith.

...

Case in point. Apparently, of all the millions of ways to pronounce the combination of words "noble warrior heroes", Brie Larson chose the wrong one. Okay.

Well, maybe if she had screamed it out the car window while throwing off her clothes, or whispered it seductively in Nick Fury's ear, that would have been more appealing to some people.

On the front of Larson and whether she comes off as right or not, ultimately what we saw is a trailer. This trailer represents maybe 2 mins of the movie and is mostly just isolated cool looking shots. We won't know whether she was great or awful until we see the movie. Do I think she is giving a RDJ level performance in the trailer? No, but that could be due to any number of factors. Perhaps Carol's more meaty scenes of amazing acting are in more spoilery scenes they don't want in the trailer. We simply won't know until the movie is out. But what I do know is I am not going to pencil Larson's Carol in as one of the best nor one of the worst MCU characters in the MCU until we actually see her work.

In the part of the trailer with Carol holding a portion of one of her dog tags, does that link up maybe with the scene where we possibly saw the top of Monica's head in the teaser trailer? She looks like she's in someone's home. Perhaps after being in Shield and reading her file she and Fury go and find Maria who kept part of the dog tag?

Maybe Maria is responsible for helping her figure out who she used to be. Especially if it appears Annette Bening isn't related to her human life or at least doesn't want her remembering her human life. Maybe her family became Maria and Monica, rather than her parents or brothers.

I would really like that!

The 'warrior heroes' was a clunky line. Dunno about whether she said it oddly, but I also don't know why some are so vehemently against people who think she did. Meh.

Because I genuinely don't get what's so wrong about it. Fury asks Carol if the Kree are noble warriors and her, a brainwashed half-Kree warrior says that no, they're noble warrior heroes. That's it, that's the line, yet a lot of people are whining about it.

Again... this wouldn't be happening if Larson were a man.

Right you are, and bet you anything that when the A4 trailer drops, not one single person is gonna be going through it saying "oh, RDJ sounds so clunky here" or "Renner needs to make his voice stronger", or "Why isn't Evans smiling?", or anything like that. It won't happen.
