Caretaker14 joins the Air Force

It's true. I head up to Montgomery tomorrow to take my ASVAB. Then I get my physical on Friday.

If everything checks out, I'll be sworn in Friday afternoon. I'll probably be sent to Basic around November.

I'm pretty excited.
Wow! You're so grown up now! Congratulations on your enlistment and I hope you'll like what you're going to do. The Air Force treats their personnel well. Good choice. I wish you all the best and thank you for volunteering your time and your life for the service of our country.

Thanks Bella.

Basically, SSO is Mission Control for the Air Force. I'll do communications, mission objectives in orbital parameters, analyzing spacecraft data, etc.

How transferable are those skillsets to the civilian world when you get out?

I think I've selected my job.

How does Space Systems Operations sound?

Ops job, you'll be on shift. You might be assigned to Vandenberg AFB, CA or Cheyenne Mountain AFS, CO stateside. They are very limited as to where they can be assigned as their mission is located at only a few locations. Overseas I know Korea is one place. I work with a bunch of those guys. If I see any of them around I'll ask them where they can be assigned. Have they said anything about an enlistment bonus?

With his job...he might be able to get a job as a government civilian...but I'm not very sure. I know a lot of communication guys who work with his guys, and they get decent work outside of the military...but they are installing and maintaining the systems that the Space Ops guys work on. So its a different type of job.

It's a question worth asking. Too many guys get out of the military with no real marketable skills.

No mention of an enlistment bonus.

As for job afterwards, my recruiter mentioned NASA.

Yup...the most extreme case I know is this Marine guy I knew back when I first deployed to the desert. He was about 1 year and a few months away from retirement. I asked him what he was going to do and he said he didn't know. I asked him what his job was...he said he painted road signs.

UPDATE:

Yesterday was CC, and no one picked up the phone.

I'm about to call in again.

I really need my date so I can plan out the next few months.

HUGE UPDATE!!!

My official entry date is October 23rd, and my job will be Weather Apprentice.

My days are numbered.

What the hell is a Weather Apprentice and what do they do?

Weather Apprentice: Performs and manages the collection, analysis, and forecast of atmospheric and space weather conditions, and the tailoring and communication of weather information.

sounds like something you could continue in the civilian world. not bad. i ended up in the IT field after working in computer operations for the air force. you're making a wise choice by joining this branch of the military. they get better facilities and overall quality of life than the army, marines and probably the navy as well. plus, getting a non-combat job will give you useful skills for your post-military career.

Hope it works out well for you, caretaker!

Caretaker: *tear*

But serisouly, congrats on the job! Do you know where your basic training and AIT are?

lol @ balloons...

My basic will be in San Antonio, and my eight months of school will be at Keesler AFB in Biloxi.

i spent 9 months keesler for tech school, too. the summer's are brutal if you're not used to weather in the south, which i wasn't. but new orleans is like an hour and a half down the road.

Hey Caretaker, God Bless you in this. Very cool.
NASA after? That would be really cool also.

Minor Update

CC was today. No jogging though, 'cause of the heat.

Oh man, you're going to be in Biloxi? I'll look you up in January...I'll be TDY there. Hmmm...I wonder if you'll be there during Hurricane season...I'm guessing you will...that's going to kill your love for life.

Well folks, sorry about the lack of posts. PSP broke. :csad:

I leave for basic tomorrow. Wish me luck. See you all in 6 1/2 weeks!

Good-bye... for now...
