The Dark Knight Rises Casting Call (All Villains)

Bettany Talks Joker
Author: Jett
Monday, May 8, 2006 - 5:46 AM CENTRAL TIME: While doing press for THE DA VINCI CODE, British thesp Paul Bettany was asked about the rumors linking him to the role of The Joker. Here's what he had to say:

"In truth I haven't heard anything officially. It's a rumour entirely made up by journalists. Or maybe it's a conspiracy by journalists to ruin my negotiation."

"So if they did offer it to me, I'd already have told the press I'd love to do it, so the producers would say, 'Wonderful. Now will you do it for $5 please?'"

Bettany, along with Aussie Lachy Hulme, have been rumored to be the "frontrunners" for the part. However, a source recently told BOF "As far as I know, Paul Bettany is not on this list [WB's list of potential Joker candidates]. His name holds some appeal with a section of the Batman fan base, but the idea is not exactly setting WB’s world on fire. Too many creepy villain roles; been there, done that. He was never really in this race, as your site intimated recently."

From where I sit, it seems that Bettany wants the role and knows more than he's letting on in the press. However, whether "they" want him, is another thing all together. Whatever the case may be, Bettany's keeping his hand close to the vest. Thanks to all the BOF'ers who sent in the lead to this story...

FYI, it's a tad sparse, but ON-FILM.NET is up and running. I Hope you'll check it out and give us a chance as we grow.

it's not that i won, you just have who said what backwards.
Bettany didn't say he didn't want the role because he's played too many villians, the studio said he's played too many villians.

makes you think though - Oldman is usually a go-to bad guy...

Oh oKay thanks, you are right about the oldman thing he does play alot of villians and it's cool to see him playing a good guy especially Gordon.

it is!
although...apart of me wished that Dennis Quaid said yes to the role. :( oh well! Oldman rocked it out.

Speaking of Oldman's role in Batman Begins, supposedly Chris Cooper was asked to play the role of Gordon and he turned it down. I would have loved to see what Cooper could have done with that role. Cooper can play a menacing villain too.

he hasnt done a Joker-ish role, but he has played a lot of villians.

and you missed the point about Gordon. :o

No, I don't think any character in the history of comics, graphic novels or movies has come close to the way joker thinks.

Bettany on the other hand has done numerous roles similar to Joker which is why the studio doesn't want him.

No he's isn't, why do people make up stories?

he could still get the role.
just because WB doesn't have him on their short list doesn't mean he couldn't campaign for the role, or be on Nolan's list. :o

That article is old, and was countered by another of Jett's sources shortly afterwards, saying Bettany is still in the race.

Besides, I also have a theory. Hulme is the only candidate we know of that has met with the producers, right? He met with the producers, but not Nolan, who says he hasn't met with anyone. Well I'm thinking, what if it's the studio that wants Hulme (we know they dont want a name, maybe they want a complete unknown). What if the studio is backing Hulme, while Nolan is the one who wants Bettany (he did supposedly bring up his name on the set of The Prestige). That article you mentioned also cites Bettany's typcasting as a reason the studio doens't want Bettany, and we all know that Nolan himself has no qualms about that (Liam Neeson as a mentor who teaches someone to sword fight?). I mean, if that article you cite is true, and the studio isn't the one fighting for Bettany... then who is? We know he's in the mix somehow, so my guess is if the studio doens't want him, Nolan probably does.

I dont see how Bettany is typecast. Sure hes played a couple villains. DaVincii Code, Firewall, and Gangster Number 1. But i think he has played the charming good friend just as much, Mast and Commander, Knights Tale, and A Beautiful Mind.

It's not like I don't want him to play him I want to see him as the joker but i heard he might not get the role.

Nathan Jones would be better as Rhino in a future spiderman film. Better yet, he could've played Juggernaut in x-men 3.

Ray Winstone would've made the perfect Juggernaut IMO, though he's a tad short.

Dalip Singh for Bane!

Wizard is MONTHS behind the lastest news.
they rarely get good scoops. at best, they get official photos before some other magazines will.
