Zemo in the comics is a genius tactician and master manipulator with a familial grudge against Cap/The Avengers
Those traits are appropriate for the character in the film, so it makes perfect sense they used him.

Yeah I agree. One of the best villains we've gotten in awhile too.

And yes, being that he's one of the few living Marvel villains, he could easily develop into a version closer to the comic, what with the purple ski mask, fur collar, and sword

I think that's the intention guys. I just got the Art of Civil War book and in the back there is the following unused concept art:

They obviously kept Zemo alive for a reason.

Yes, I didn't mean that he had nothing in common and the Russos and the writers just randomly chose that name, but rather that if he had been named something else I don't think many people would go "he's just like Baron Zemo".

^that's true

and man, that concept art is gorgeous

they don't need to scar him or anything, that would make him too similar to Crossbones
he's just an international fugitive, so he has to hide his identity

but anyway, dat Hela tho

We better get this at some point.

That's amazing. I don't know if it fits in with the movie's version of Zemo but, come on, that's awesome. I said after the movie I would have been happy with him having fur on his coat a ski mask while in Siberia but, after that, I really want to see that.

"She plays the worst of the worst. So evil," Ruffalo teased. "She is going to kill us. It's such a great part she gets to play."

Hopefully he's right!

Because a masks makes your realllllyyy inconspicuous...haha. Guess it would eliminate facial recognition....but it would draw attention

How do you pronounce the name? He-la or Hel-a? I've been doing it the first way.

I always said it Hell-a
but who knows, these scandinavian pronunciations are ridiculous

This is a good question. I've never been sure honestly. I think the first way (with a longer e) is probably more accurate but the Norse vowels aren't quite the same as English. I'm really interested to see how they choose to pronounce it in the film.

In a Norse pronunciation it would be with a longer vowel, but it would sound different than the long e in English (then again the L is a bit different as well). In Norse mythology the character is also just called Hel, like the realm.

For the pronunciation of Hela I'd say that Hell-a is correct.

I'll give Marvel Studio's credit for knowing how to cast and get quality actors in their films. Cate Blanchett is an amazing choice to play Hela. I just hope that they will get the right script and story for all the great character actors on this film.

I think I can safely say that Cate Blanchett as Hela is the most excited I've ever been for a Marvel casting. I love Hela and I'm massive fan of Cate, so it's pretty much a dream casting move for me.

I remember back in 2015 when it was first rumoured that Cate was attached to this film and Jimmy Kimmel asked her about it and she joked that she'd been cast as Thor. :woot:

So anyway, can I completely lower the tone and turn this into a drooly Cate fan thread now?

Finarfin is a fan of the actress who played his daughter, why am I not surprised. :o

You, Sir, are automatically awesome for knowing what my username refers to. :woot: Small correction though, my username is Finarfiniel (rather than Finarfin) who is actually Galadriel herself, it's her patronymic surname, a.k.a. 'daughter of Finarfin'. I'm a chick. And a huge Tolkien nerd. :cwink:

Yeah, nice try there Finarfin"iel". How's your brother Fëanor"iel" doing, is he planning another blasphemous rebellion against the gods. :o
No but seriously, I didn't know that thing about the -iel suffix. And I have the nerve to call myself a Tolkien nerd. Looks like you just outnerded me, lol.

But!, that's got nothing to do with Cate Blanchett, has it.
I agree, she's definitely a great actress deserving of admiration, and I especially can't wait to see her wearing that silly headgear from the concept art. :hehe:

Please don't mention that Kinslaying son of a ***** in my presence again. :yuk:

Yeah, it's an elf thing, -iel is for females, and -ion is for males. It's why Haldir calls Legolas, 'Thranduilion' in FoTR. I'm a fount of ultimately useless elf-related information, lol.

It does a little bit. :cwink:

I'm stupidly excited to see how they adapt Hela's costume to a live action format. For no other reason than to veer a little more on topic, here's a random picture of Hela being a badass:

The concept art Marvel posted is of course just that, concept, but it still brings hope that they might try to make a pretty true adaptation of her wonderfully weird costume.

She's had to endure some pretty awful costumes in the past (that's the price you pay for being a comic book female character), but that redesigned classic one in the picture is pretty badass. And hopefully it's the one they use as their main inspiration for the movie look.

And is that a fire-cape? :awesome: Because that's completely new to me. Cool.

Yeah, I hope they keep her costume as close to source as they can, but at the same time I don't want her to look goofy. Hela should be a properly intimidating and scary villainess. I absolutely love the concept art from AoU for the 'Peoples of Hel' in Thor's vision:

I hope they stick with that look for Hela's minions in Ragnarok, a whole army of those guys could visually be cool and freaky.

On another note, one thing that concerns me following the whole ridiculous X-Men: Apocalypse poster fiasco, is that they'll chicken out of having a proper physical fight between Thor and Hela. Hela has always been crazy strong, so strong that she can fight Thor one on one (and even beat him on occasion), I'll be so disappointed if we don't get a proper showdown between them in this film because they're too scared of having Thor fight a woman. :whatever:

I don't think anyone cares about a man fighting a woman. We've been having that in superhero movies going all the way back to Batman Returns.

The poster got singled out because of the specific imagery used (namely a woman being violently strangled), not because it was a woman fighting a man. Nobody said anything about Wolverine vs. Deathstrike or hell the female Terminator in that crappy Terminator 3 movie.

My main pondering is whether they will have Hela possess a genuine connection to the afterlife(s), and thus implicitly show that the MCU most definitely has one ( or more ). It doesn't have to be that Hel, the realm, is an afterlife itself, mind. Alternatively, Hel could just be the Realm with the closest connection, and thus the place where gods go when they wish to commune with the dead, or try to bring them back. . . or just wish to contemplate and affiliate themselves with the forces of death.

Which actually makes me sad that it seems none of the human characters will be returning, because I'd love to see the looks on various peoples' faces when Thor just casually drops that bombshell. I suppose Banner can serve that role.
