Romance Celine Song’s Rom-Com ‘Materialists’ (Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans) | A24

Wow a B-?! I thought this was really really good. I thought this was a very thoughtful and realistic look at dating and how people go about seeking "love." The ending was a bit more tame than i was expecting though, i was expecting a little bit more punch or twist to it but it felt like it played it safe.

I think the reason the audience reaction is so low is because this is NOT a romcom. It is not a comedy at all. It is a straight up DRAMA with a few moments of quirky levity sprinkled in. But I think the marketing F'd this movie. It skewed people's expectations to what they were walking into but on its own terms this is a really good romance drama.

Just watched this. It’s more of a light romantic drama than a rom com. Though one thing in particular is pretty dark. The movie is as predictable as you would expect from the trailer but I thought they would do more with Dakota’s and Pedro’s relationship and show her being enamored by his wealth and his world. But they kinda rushed through everything with that. Also, this movie could have been called “Checkov’s Leg-Breaking Surgery.”

About that surgery. That plot point doesn’t work if you understand basic human anatomy and how a person who is 5’6” wouldn’t have the upper body frame of someone 6’ or taller. I guess it’s fine but it took me out of the movie a bit.

All that said, I enjoyed the film and I really like Dakota Johnson in movies not named Madame Web of Fifty Shades of something or another.
