Chaos War

Are Ares and Blood Oath in TBP because I want to get the background on Marvel's Mikaboshi before I read Chaos War?
Yep, they're both available in trade format. Just make sure you're getting Ares by Michael Avon Oeming and Travel Foreman, not Dark Avengers: Ares by Kieron Gillen and Manuel Garcia.

I dont know if anyone covered this on a previous post... However Galactus has a interest in this because Mikaboshi has basically been reconned into the embodiment of the darkness that the universe comes from. That means before Eternity, there was the Chaos King. It also means he was the being Galactus was floating in after the collapse of his universe. Thus Mikaboshi actually predates Galactus. In fact he could be the very reason Galens universe died as a demon used the Mmkran crystals to cause the radiation cancer. Like a cycle of life. In a sense, he's the end AND begining of the Universe.

Fair point. Galactus and Surfer show up in CHAOS WAR #2, and I wouldn't be surprised if Pak & Van Lente explained it in a similar way.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! It's funny because it's true.

As many things tend to be. :word:

I've not been following the conversation but he should get the Incredible Hercules arc that tied in with Secret Invasion as well "Sacred Invasion" if I'm not mistaken. It's the only arc of Herc I've read and I understood it entirely and it was a fantastic read.

Yeah, that would be good. You should read the rest of iHerc, too. :oldrazz:
Damn Marvel for making me kill my bank account while trying to play catch up with a major event.:csad::cmad:

If you want to save some money, you can skip Blood Oath. Mikaboshi did appear in there, but it's a story that takes place way in the past, so it's not really relevant to Chaos War's present-day story.

Does Blood Oath have Mikaboshi's origin in there or is he just someone Thor fights ?

He's just one of the gods Thor and the Warriors Three encounter on their travels through the various other pantheons' homes.

Incredible Hercules to end with Chaos War?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I mean, erm, let me regain my composure a little bit.
Fred Van Lente has a post up on Twitter that might make you sad: “Just typed “So Ends the Eighth & Final Volume of THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES” in me & Greg’s outline. Sigh. Thanks, all you readers, thank you.” He later reminded readers that that eighth volume is the current event storyline, Chaos War.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The Incredible Hercules has been, bar-none, one of the most fun books that Marvel has printed in years, following an unlikely spin-off to Greg Pak’s World War Hulk saga. With the Incredible Hulk title suddenly (inexplicably?) becoming INCREDIBLE HERCULES, the story teamed up the great goofy Greek powerhouse with Amadeus Cho, a super-smart teen subversive sidekick. So successful was Fred Van Lente and Greg Pak’s launch that they’ve even spun off their own Marvel event, called Chaos War.
According to Van Lente, the series was “always intended for 8 [volumes],” but at the same time, I think the sense of humor and charm generated by this book has always made iHerc an important star in the Marvel publishing constellation. Will Marvel — CAN Marvel — take the epic writing team of Pak and Van Lente apart? Here’s hoping that the duo sticks together and continues working their magic elsewhere in the Marvel Universe.

Just announced on Attack of the Show's Fresh Ink segment.

Written by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and drawn by Koi Pham. It will be a 5 issue mini series. It has the god known as the Chaos King, the illustration actually showing it to be Amatsu-Mikaboshi, attacking earth with an army of alien slave gods. To fight him will be Marvel's God Squad led by Herc and featuring Thor, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Venus, Sersi, and Cho. It will also featuring Hulk assembling the survivors of his family after World War Hulks to fight the gods too.

*Comment*
2 issues into it - I LIKE IT.

I haven't been too impressed with the first two issues so far.

I thought the way they excused Eternity was particularly lame.

I thought it made sense. Eternity's existence is defined by Mikaboshi's, so he can't take a direct hand in things. Very metaphysical, which works for gods and abstract beings.

Yeah, I knew that CHAOS WAR was the end of the Pak/Van Lente era of HERCULES comics, but it still can be saddening to see it spelled out. Still, it amounts to over 3 years worth of solid stories, and a 3-4 year run on any series these days is often nothing to be ashamed of. Had Marvel launched it as HERCULES #1, it wouldn't have lasted. Instead they pulled every editorial trick possible to make sure Pak & Van Lente were able to finish on their terms, while still writing stories that helped tie into the moment (such as DARK REIGN). It will all make a handsome hardcover Omnibus collection or two.

Maybe it is a sad commentary that this was one of Marvel's best runs of the last half decade, and yet Marvel had to basically have it begin by taking over INCREDIBLE HERCULES and then as a series of mini's, including one promoted as a "mini event" in order to get enough attention to be bought, and even that didn't always work to keep it a Top 100 book. Nowadays Marvel seems tired of events every year and wants to go back to an era when quality books sold, not "important" books. Too bad; they're reaping five years of retailer/reader expectations they shamelessly capitalized on, and it will only take that many years of investment in the other direction to even begin to get things back to the way they were from 2001-2003. And even then...who knows when the U.S. economy will even return to the "glorious" days of 2006? To "only" 5-6% unemployment?

Besides, Fred Van Lente is ready for prime time, and I can't wait to see what he does for other franchise characters. He's already hitting quality home runs, if not big sales, on Taskmaster and Iron Fist/Power Man.

The way it was just kinda like

"ALRIGHT WHO THE **** DO WE NEED? HOW ABOUT THIS ***** BOOM HERE SHE IS AND GUESS WHAT NOW ITS TIME FOR GALACCCTUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSS AND BOOM THERE HE IS OH **** IS THAT SILVER SURFER HES PISSED BUT THATS OK WELL JUST HOLD HIM OFF WITH MAGIC THEN BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM 9 OTHER PEOPLE GET SUMMONED AW YEAH *****ES LETS DO THIS".

was kinda lame. But awesome at the same time cause it doesn't waste time.

Which is, upon retrospect, almost exactly what issue 1 was.

Anybody else think Zeus looks a bit like a Stormtrooper? :)

It's the stupid (usless) armor he was givin in the Ares mini. Dont know who he artist is using it... But at least they got his beard the right color, lol.

However I think issue 3 was superb... Chaos King using Zeus and the others to fool Hercules for access of the God Council was a great device. After rereading the entire series, it doesnt suprize me to see Athena on the bad guys team. It was already hinted that the council thought the Olympians would use the Sacred Invasion as a chance to invade their realms and claim one as their own. And Im starting to beleave this is what she's doing. If you look at everything as a chess move; She's put Hercules into forced leadership positions, created the bond between him and Cho. "Killed" him and then gave Cho the means to find him via a billion dollor company. She has kept the Olympians out of the fights DISPITE being the main council member pushing for action before Mikaboshi's arrival. Restored a Olympian as the top Sky Father (Hercules) and most likely is the one who told Chaos King to use his family members as the tools to make Hercules react with his emotions.

Im very excited to see how this all ends and how her plan is going to effect the order of the Gods.

I hope Athena's a double-agent. I know she plays the long game and can appear to be incredibly ruthless, but I think at the end of the day she's still a beneficent goddess who wants to help her pantheon, not tear it apart or reorganize it under herself or whatever. Should be interesting to see what her reasons are for (apparently) siding with Mikaboshi, though. It can't be as simple as just wanting to back the winning team.

I'll wait for the Trade on THIS, Hopefully the LCS gets the Thor Chaos books.

Simonson Raises the Dead in "Chaos War: X-Men"

CBR News: Louise, You're no stranger to Marvel's mutants thanks to your run on "X-Factor," but it looks like many of the characters in "Chaos War: X-Men" either didn't live long enough to join that team, never joined that team or joined after your time in the X-Universe. So how does it feel to be working on this series? Do you feel like you're exploring new territory, working on familiar ground or a bit of both?

Louise Simonson: Heck, I don't think I've ever written any of these characters. Without Chris and the internet - and of course editors who know what they're doing - I'd probably be totally lost.

It's fun working on the series, but it is kind of like jumping into a game of double-dutch jumprope with the ropes already spinning.

When you were working on "X-Factor," Chris Claremont was still the driving writer behind the X-Men series. I imagine you guys had a chance to talk and collaborate on some of the big X-Men crossovers from that era. What's it like working with Chris again?

Back in the day, Chris and I crossed over on "Mutant Massacre," "Fall of the Mutants" (kind of), "Inferno" and "Extinction Agenda." Even though it was a while back, we've pretty much fallen into the old patterns, and, as everyone probably knows by now, I love working with Chris. He's so incredibly talented and is such a fountain of ideas! Plus, Chris (bless him!) has kept up more with the modern X-Men's continuity than I had. I had a lot of catching up to do.

Let's talk a little bit about your cast of characters for "Chaos War: X-Men." From what we know at this point, it looks like you have the original Thunderbird, Banshee and several of Madrox's duplicates. But who are the two women on the cover, and are there any team members that aren't featured in the cover art?

The women on the cover are Sophie and Esmee Cuckoo - two of five of Emma Frost's clone teen telepaths called the Stepford Cuckoos. The jealous Esme, wanting to be the dominant Cuckoo, set the stronger Sophie up to die, then later died herself. Though not team members, we are also featuring Moira McTaggert and Destiny from the X-Men cast.

What do you find most interesting about your cast of characters in "Chaos War: X-Men?"

Most interesting? The characters' personalities and conflicts, how these led to each character's death and how these traits might influence their actions within the present story. Did they learn anything by their deaths?
Thunderbird got short shrift. The poor guy's pride and impulsiveness led to his death, early on, before he matured into the man he was meant to be. It will be fun to give him another chance.
Banshee tried to save a batch of folks, but, despite his best efforts, everyone died. Was his death for nothing? He needs to come to terms with that and define for himself, and the others, what heroism really means.
We also have several sets of duplicates with opposite "needs." That's extra fun! In life, Sophie and Esme Cuckoos strove to differentiate themselves from the group and took sibling rivalry to a bad, bad end. Considering their history, it will be fun to see if they can work together.
And these Multiple Men, who were happily part of a composite, are now, in death, stuck as separate beings and long for the old unity. They don't have flashy powers. Will they be good enough?
Will this team of resurrected X-Characters have a team leader? Do they even see eye to eye on what needs to be done to stop the Chaos King?

At first, the group dynamics are a bit fractured. Only Banshee knows everyone else, and he's distracted by Moira's presence and the attack of the Chaos King's minions. And Esme and Sophie are feuding - understandably. In this crazy mix, Thunderbird assumes his role as natural leader. (Also, he is the chosen of...but that would be telling.) Banshee is a stabilizing influence.
Once they figure out what's going on, they are literally swept up in the action. In the midst of conflict, they can act like heroes against unspeakable odds or be destroyed by Chaos - and take the universe down with them.

In terms of plot and theme what is "Chaos War X-Men" about, and how important is the setting to the story? Also, since the characters are returning to the land of the living, I'd expect the locales in the mini to be especially important.

As everyone must know by now, the Chaos King has been sweeping through the universe, destroying and/or suborning pantheon after pantheon of gods. His last stop is Earth. He has attacked Earth's mightiest gods and most have fallen. But, so far, he has considered the nature gods beneath his notice, so they remain free, at least temporarily. The Native American nature deity, the ThunderBird, influences the uniting of the dead X-Men and the discovery of a prophecy that hints at the only way the Chaos King might be defeated - but only if everyone involved in the battle does their part. The failure of one will mean the failure of all.
It will be up to our heroes to become their best selves and oppose the Chaos King. If they fail, it will mean the destruction of everything. In this, Thunderbird himself is the key.
We deal with two locales in the story, and setting is important in both. The first issue takes place on the grounds of the destroyed X-Mansion; Dead X-Men/Dead X-Mansion. It works on a lot of levels. It is there our heroes discover Destiny's books of prophesy and begin to understand what they have to do.
The second setting is Muir Island - a place with its own ruins but also crisscrossed with powerful ley lines. It is one of the most magical places on Earth and our heroes are able to use this ancient magic to Earth's advantage.

With two very different locales, you need a solid artist to give them a different visualfeel, in this case, that job falls on Doug Braithwaite. What do you feel he and his art brings to this book?

Doug's art is very beautiful. It's also grounded in reality so it makes the fantastic interactions in this series seem believable. He's wonderful at expressions and gestures and has a great ability to convey subtext. He's also really good at action, and there's plenty of that as well. It's hard to imagine a more perfect artist for these issues.

What can you tell us about the obstacles and adversaries the X-Men will face in this series? Are they going to directly confront the Chaos King?

They'll confront one of his lieutenants - the trickster god, Raven, who has gone over to Chaos. The direct interactions with the Chaos King himself seem to be reserved for gods and demi-gods.
In rallying the nature spirits of the Earth - and, most of all, in awakening the sleeping One Who Dwells Above All himself - the actions of the dead X-Men influence the outcome of the war against Chaos as much as the actions of the gods themselves

What can you tell us about the supporting cast of "Chaos War: X-Men?" Will we see the team interacting with any living mutants, or are most of the X-Men immobilized by what the Chaos King did in the first issue of "Chaos War?"

Our guys don't interact with any living mutants - or living humans, for that matter - because almost every human on Earth has been cast into a magical trance. But as I mentioned Moira MacTaggert and Destiny - who are both dead - are part of the story.
This will be a really fun and epic crossover. Lots of large scale action with the very existence of the universe hanging in the balance. The Hulk books are the closest to done of the stories I've read so far and those are a hoot! Here's Hoping ours can measure up!

I think I may pick Chaos War: X-Men up after all. I was gonna skip it, but I've always found Thunderbird interesting and it sounds like Simonson has some good ideas in mind for him.

To me, it will depend on how many of these "rebirths" last. If none of them do, all of this is just well intentioned wallet-emptiers. If some of them do, than some of it may be essential. I am partisan on this. I can only afford so many of the spin off mini's, with DEAD AVENGERS a priority.

There is no way the original Thunderbird is coming back. None, nyet, zero. No one cares about him, and he was always intended for canon fodder (once it became obvious that one of the new X-Men of the 70's had to die quick, and it wasn't going to be Wolverine). Warpath has effectively filled in for him within the X-books for years, especially in X-Force. Same for the Madrox dupes or the two Cuckoo's. However, Banshee's odds of coming back may not be as high as some may think, and Moira is a dark horse candidate.

Yeah, I don't care about any of what you just said. I'm looking at these minis as chances to have some quick, fun stories with characters who have been out of the picture for a long time. Whether they get to stay alive or not--and I suspect none of them will--I'll have gotten my money's worth if I enjoy the stories.

What kills me here is that Banshee is alive!!!! He came back in Necrosha, battling the death infection and all that stuff. He was then blown out of a window before the dead people were all absorbed by Selene. So he's alive out there infected by the T.O. virus... much like how Doug Ramsey was before overcoming the virus.

So why the heck is he suddenly dead again?! Are we do assume he flew back inside the building and died again between panels?

Man that annoys me. But I'll likely get this because I do miss Banshee and I like the idea of the various Madrox's.
