An adorable Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple and their daughter generated such a strong racist backlash on YouTube that the comments section had to be closed.

The ad had received more than 1,600 likes and more than 500 dislikes as of Thursday evening.

Prior to the closure, the comment section had been filled "with references to Nazis, 'troglodytes' and 'racial genocide,'" according to Adweek.

YouTube comment sections have a reputation for breeding racist flame wars. CNN focused on the issue earlier this year, after a panel addressing racism and race on YouTube was held at South By Southwest:

"Everyone gets hate comments on YouTube," said Andre Meadows, the creator of the Black Nerd Comedy channel. "You can make the most wonderful video in the world and you will get 'Fake!' and 'Gay!'"
But for minority creators, "when you get comments, it seems to be targeted toward race almost immediately. A lot of people get 'dumb video, stupid video' -- but with mine it immediately goes to racial slurs."

Commenters on the cereal's Facebook page also said they found the commercial "disgusting" and that it made them "want to vomit." Other hateful commenters expressed shock that a black father would stay with his family.

However, many took to Facebook to express their appreciation for Cheerios' decision to feature a mixed-race family.

"Having been mixed in the '70s, I'd like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like," Beschelle Lockhart posted Monday.

"Just watched your commercial with the biracial family. Beautiful. Thank you so much," Alexandra Burt wrote.

Cheerios was unfazed by the racist Internet backlash. "Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all," Camille Gibson, Cheerios vice president of marketing, told Gawker.

:hehe:  :whatever:

It's YouTube so this is unsurprising, except that it's apparently news to someone that YouTube commenters are among the nastiest part of the internet.

The commercial itself was nothing new either. It's just Cheerios doing their "good for the heart" slogan and nothing I can find offensive or threatening. In fact had it not been pointed out this was an interracial couple, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it.

So...nothing new?

Youtube comments has always been like this, I can't even remember the last time I went though and read youtube comments.

I stopped reading YouTube comments long ago. I used to listen to Pink Floyd on there, but was quite disgusted with the amount of Neo-Nazi's that gathered on the video comments section (thanks to said imagery and lyrics in The Wall.)

I'm confused...I watched the commercial and couldn't find anything racist about it....what the heck am I missing?

it's not the commercial it's some people's reaction to the commercial that is racist

Mostly morons post comments on YouTube so its not a surprise.

Most of those racist knuckle daggers wouldn't have the balls to say the stuff they post in real life or to peoples of colours face. Typical internet cowardly racists.

Are interracial couple commercials rare in the U.S or something?

I knew there was a reason I loved Cheerios.

Now if only Lucky Charms had a commercial with a gay couple.

Tell me about it. Roger Waters would want to slap each and every one of those idiots.

Anyone know why racist are completely against people with different skin colors inter-mixing but completely support various white ethnicities from inter-mixing?

I mean doesn't a Irish person and Russian person having a kid "ruin" the genetic and cultural legacy just as much as a French person and a black Jamaican person having kids?

You just have to wonder what percentage of the public is anonymously racist.

Just about any website without strict regulation will have a flood of users using racist language.

More companies should have interracial couples in their commercials.

The fact that this type of commercial is so rare in this day and age is very telling about how little progress society has actually made in race relations.

True, I always jokingly say to my friends when I see an interracial couple on television, "ooooo, an interracial couple how exotic." I know I'm not funny.

it's telling that we see this very rarely....there are very few movies and tv shows about an interracial couple where race isnt the story.

Let me guess: "Waiting for the Worms"?

Interracial relationships has been on the rise for decades in many countries including the U.S so you would think the media would reflect that more.

Logic isn't racists strong points. Considering we all have common ancestors and came from Africa doesn't even factor into their mindset.

Even if your Irish or Russian that doesn't mean your ethnic background is completely Irish or Russian or even Caucasian.

The most offensive thing about the commercial is that little girls acting.

It's obvious that this is tearing apart the fabric of American society.
