Christmas Lovers Thread-Grinches Stay Out

My niece came at my house the other day and asked me if she could play with my replica light saber, it made me proud and happy. She will get one for Xmass IF her mother agree unfortunately.

I think the big thing with the Post-Christmas/New Years blues is for most of the country the next two-three months are bitter cold and you can't do much but huddle inside and "hibernate". Pretty much every other holiday promises something better is coming, but after New Year's it's just cold, the days are short and you just don't want to do much.

I was done to take over and stamp out paganism, so it's roots are tied to paganism. Most of my Jr High friends weren't religious at all, but they all celebrated Christmas. For me, it's a time to spend with and enjoy family. I do go to church, but that's more because it's tied to my wife's Christmas Eve tradition which is more about family than anything because we go to the church her Aunt and Uncle are heavily involved in. Basically I think Christians stole the holiday from Pagans and everyone else/capitalism stole it from Christians. However, I think everyone should be free and encouraged to celebrate it there own way.
My point is there is no correlation with the way Christmas was celebrated compared to the pagan festivals. There is no "connection" beyond there being rival celebrations. That's not really having the same "roots".I think we should just leave it at that.

Oddly enough, my staunchly Catholic father was quite dismissive of Christmas and other celebratory Christian holidays for much of the same reason that others on this thread are. He tolerated it, because it was great for us kids, but I know he did not approve of any holiday that was not celebrated by the original apostles. :woot:

.

I'm part of that small segment of the population which is biologically geared towards being a night owl and cold weather. Right now, my energy is surging and I enjoy the cold. But, you have my sympathies because in 6 months, I'll be right where you are.

That was actually a very common attitude among Christian groups during the first 100 or so years in America. Even in the context of celebrating Christ's birth, Christmas was seen as gratuitous and frivolous.

, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, our Everlasting Father.

I would say many people who celebrate christmas celebrate it as a secular holiday, since its origins were pagan in nature (Winter Solstice) rather than religious.

But yes we love christmas, We love singing carols, going to watch the lights, chopping down the tree, putting up the lights and ornaments. Santa book and pajamas on christmas eve.

All of it.

Took my daughter to see Santa last night....she was so excited....stuff like that brings a smile to your face.

I got to be Santa at my job for the weekend. Got paid to sit on my ass and occasionally put on a voice and take pictures with kids. The beard was pretty itchy though.

Her Santa was an old guy with a real beard.

I actually don't mind it too much because without the next 2-3 months of bad weather, you can't appreciate the good weather when it does come. I lived in Arizona the past two years and am actually excited for the cold and looking forward to the huddling in and "hibernating".

This is just the 2nd year in my household that Santa hasn't existed in my family. For 25 years in my household there was always a Santa. My little sister is 19 now and my little brother is finally old enough (12) to know better.......I have to say I hate it. I loved sneaking downstairs Christmas Eve with my Dad putting gifts under the tree....hearing my little brother wake up at 5 am tip toe into my room and whisper "Nick.....Nick....Santa came!"

I'll cherish those moments for the rest of my life.

Pretty much. Watching Children enjoy/experience Christmas is awesome. we had children a little later, and on my side of the family the previous christmas started to feel pretty empty.

I'm guessing your family is starting to ramp up the pressure to have some grand kids :D

seriously though, We had no young kids in our family, after awhile it became pretty meh. Now that there is a kid, it just brings so much joy at christmas time.

In a last-ditch effort to find someone — anyone — to spend Christmas with him, 85-year-old James Gray turned to the want ads.

The retired butler, who has no immediate family members to turn to, placed an ad in the Irish Post hoping to break a ten-year streak of lonely holidays.

"I think the last time I saw someone on Christmas Day was when I saw my accountant about 10 years ago," he told the Post.

Sadly, the ad resulted in only one response — and even that person eventually backed out.

"I just want to find someone in time," James said. "I think there must be quite a few lonely people around and I am on my own, so it would make sense I think if someone came here for Christmas lunch. I just had smoked salmon and prawns on my own last year and I had to put up with it. This time of year is so hard if you are old and alone because it feels like everybody else around you is enjoying themselves."

What a difference a day makes: Just 24 hours after his story was published in the Post, James received a deluge of responses from potential Christmas companions.

"It is so touching to me, after all these years alone, to see this response from people," he was quoted as saying. "I'm so appreciative of the offers. I should have done this years ago."

Those who are unable to make it out to south London to see James have been sending him hundreds of Christmas cards and gifts — his first in years.

"I did not get a single card for my birthday in August, but I just had to put up with it," he said.

Good to see people reaching out and touching someone who wants to have friedns for the holidays

Christmas is magical. To me it means decorating a tree, looking at lights, and buying stuff for others. Great atmosphere. People say it's too commercialised now, but everything is what you make it.

Absolutely. I feel that way about Christmas, too.

I'm surprised PETA hasn't left a burning cross on that guys porch yet.

That cat is so patient. Mine would have scratched my eyes out at the first taping.

Those are the best and I hear those guys get paid more because of the real beard, the fake beard santas look awful these days.

In reality Christmas has always been commercialized ever since Montgomery Ward published the Rudolph book during christmas time. I don't see anything wrong with commercialism in general, but it's Christmas who cares either way?

They complain about Christmas becoming too commercialized in Miracle on 34th Street and that movie came out almost 70 years ago.
