Christopher Nolan Meeting With Directorial Candidates

I wonder why whenever the possibility of Darren or Jones helming this movie gets brought up you have people constantly saying it needs a 'traditional' director when with all due respect over the last decade the better received superhero/comic book films have all mostly come from directors who are anything but traditional.

Nolan's presence on the project suggests that, despite Scott and Snyder being listed, they're wanting a director who puts character drama at the forefront however 'fun' this take is going to be.

I agree especially with Jones but even Aronfsky would work if the movie is in part an analysis of Superman's place in the world as an alien and his great sense of loss over Krypton and maybe his adoptive parents as well. Maybe Nolan is looking at all the years of sunny smiling Big Blue Boy Scout Superman and has decided to instead look at the more emotional side of his character and the personal sacrifices he makes for the sake of duty. It is not unprecedented in Superman comics for the stories to focus more on his personal feelings and losses. Even if it is not the main theme in the movie it could be a good part of it.

we are just afraid that the new superman movie will not be fun.

sorry but we need a fun movie to start the franchise. you can go wrath of khan and empire strikes back with the sequel. just give me an emotion action packed first movie with a huge final battle.

By all accounts it will be fun but that doesn't mean I want a mediocre hack who trades in 'fun' (with the commas there's a difference) in charge of it.

People gripe about Singer turning Supes into a mopey dude, but that's because he tried to play it like Donner. Most Superman stories nowadays ARE darker than usual, and are deconstructions of his boy scout mentality. It can still be fun, but you do have to make him human, to an extent. Because that's how he grew up.

Yeah. I think what Singer did was it negates the other aspect of Superman that we know: confidence.

ok lets make it more simple.

we need a Star Trek and Iron Man type fun movie.

Even though the first Superman movie may seem dated to many, many also consider it to be the ultimate superhero movie. With that being said, Richard Donner's first big movie he directed right before Superman was The Omen (before that he directed TV shows such as Kojak & Gilligan's Island). I think many of the naysayers (if alive back then) would have said the same thing about Donner. The Omen was one of the "darkest" movies at that time, yet he made one of the best superhero movies to date. I think we all will be pleasantly surprised by someone like Aronfsky (if he is chosen).

Yeah they were superbly fun Star Trek was exceptional, only gripe I had with Iron Man was the action wasnt good enough but thats not really your point I suppose :D

Okay, bud..even though someone just made THE POINT that Richard Donner's first film was The Omen before Superman, and that was a dark film.

Yeah I dont get why people are assuming that directors that have made Dark films cant make bright fun movies.

because some people lack imagination. Not to you dave40 because there are worse.

if we weould get every 5 years supeman movies for the last years i wouldnt have a problem with experimenting with directors.

again the problem is that after 20 years we got SR. and it was not big enough. now 4 years later we are hoping for a new movie and only because of the lawsuit.

are we in a position to experiment?

They may feel they have to tbh I dont get WBs I think making a Superman movie is more simple than making a Batman film.

The goofballs in here who keep whining and complaining and worrying about the next Superman film being "dark" are about as worse as the ones who suggest lousy pretty boy underwear model actors with zero acting experience to play Superman in the casting boards.

Darren Aronofsky would be an inspired choice in the director's chair. In "The Fountain" he created the special effects by using micro-photography of chemical reactions in lieu of CGI in hopes of preventing the film from becoming dated. He's a maverick and something like that in a Superman film would be amazing.

Duncan Jones is also an exciting proposition.

The more I think about it, Abrams would make a good team with Nolan. And if you can't get Abrams might as well get the next closest person, Reeves.

Hard to see Nolan and Darren making a good team. Darren would need to let his ego go a bit and be a team player to make a kick ass Superman film.

Out of "rumoured" the list....I would choose Snyder first, then Darren, then Reeves and then Duncan.

However, I also think Alfonso Cuaron would work well also.

If Darren gets it....expect him and Nolan to get a solid cast for the film though.

Jon Hamm or Hugh Jackman as Superman
Natalie Portman or Emily Blunt as Lois Lane
Leonardo DiCaprio or Daniel Day Lewis as Lex Luthor
Day Lewis or Viggo Mortensen as Braniac
Jim Caviezel or Hugh Jackman as Jor El

Quite a few possibilities....

If they go with Hamm for Superman I think Portman is out along with most of the other picks for Lois. Hamm looks more like Portman's dad than her Superman. And vice versa.

Aronofsky along with Nolan are my favorite directors! This is exciting! I hope he gets the job and brings Clint Mansell along for the score!!! Clint Mansell's music will bring out the emotion of Superman like no other!

*Fingers crossed*

you have to be in cuckoo land to think that daniel day lewis is going to do a comic book film.

not a chance. he is way to pompous to do a movie like superman, he is far too up his own tight backside, that he is living in his own dreamworld, he seriously needs to get over himself.

one movie a year would be enough, but instead, ddl is a right picky sod, who would probably make going to the toilet into an epic 3 hour oscar winning saga.

in fact right now, i would say there's more chance of Elvis playing lex luthor than daniel day lewis making a movie anytime soon
