Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (July 21, 2017) - Part 3

It's isn't 'sad' or 'depressing'.

It's a realistic interpretation of the survival of 300,000 men, thanks to the bravery of ordinary civilians doing something extraordinary.

It's actually an incredibly uplifting and positive film. I don't know where all this negative stuff is coming from. Yes, it's relentless, but relentless with tremendous catharsis.

I don't know... maybe it's because I'm British, and have more of a connection to the story.

This isn't a film about victory or 'winning', but it sure as hell isn't one long misery-fest about people dying.

All of this. Seriously this film gets hit with some of the most bizarre criticism I ever saw.

It shows such tremendous courage, not just in big actions but in small ones too, there are so many truly wonderful characters whose heroism and desire to help is really wonderful and inspirational.

Am I the only one who did not like Dunkirk? I found it pointless. No story, no character development, just random scenes.

And I love everything Nolan has done!

I think that was the point. There are no traditional characters, so to speak. Just people.

I give the movie 8/10. Great atmosphere and great Pictures but I miss something on that.. For a Nolan-Film it was a Little bit disappointing.

Dunkirk passed the $100M domestic mark after grossing an estimated $28.13M this weekend. 10-Day total stands at $102.84M.

Just a 44.3% drop from last weekend.

The Emoji Movie debuted to 25.6 million for the weekend, therefore Dunkirk is still No. 1 in the domestic market. Hail Nolan !!!!!!!!!!

Still an estimate. We gotta wait a bit more to see how much it has truly dropped.

Actually hail to the audiences for both films for giving us a fairly robust movie weekend.

A lot of people are used to a narrative in a film with a protagonist or group of them moving towards a goal, as am I. This movie lacks that which is why some don't really know what to make of it. It's definitely an experiment.

It's not really an experiment in my eyes. It's not the first film where immersion or philosophy is the main focus and characters take a backseat. Far from. This approach isn't an issue for me.

The goal is survival.

I think the jumping around timeline is where it gets muddled in regards to some that don't care for it.

Certainly. The Sunday drop is a bit suspect at this point. So the weekend figures will probably come in a bit lower. But considering the huge preview figure for Dunkirk, a 45% drop would be really very good. Dunkirk is already pacing ahead or staying close to it's closest comps from the last few years, that's a great sign.

Anyone know if Nolan was asked about the DCEU in his interview rounds? Seems like a missed opportunity.

He said he loved Wonder Woman and he's glad he can just watch these movies as a fan now after making them for 10 years. But I think that's all he was asked because he doesn't do interviews with bloggers.

Christopher Nolan got a nice birthday present today, as his film, Dunkirk (Warner Bros. Pictures), held on to the top spot at the domestic box office a second straight weekend with $28.1 million, for a total of $102.8 million. Internationally, Dunkirk added another strong $45.6 million from 12,600 screens in 63 markets. The film has now earned $131.3 million overseas and $234.1 million worldwide, with markets like Italy (Aug. 31), China (Sept. 1), and Japan (Sept. 9) still a ways off. Made for $100 million,

Good news. The film is in the profit territory already, most likely.

I think Dunkirk lacking rewatchability has to do more with the unorthodox structure/story than anything about the tone and content.

This. It's a great film, it was a fantastic experience watching it in IMAX but I don't have much desire to rewatch it again anytime soon.

I want to watch it again at least one more time with subtitles. :cwink:

Exactly the time jumps and the non-linear storytelling is what makes the movie pretty re-watchable to me and adds to the magic on each consecutive viewing.

You keep seeing more details and appreciated them better.

I've never understood the "it's depressing so I only want to watch it once" mentality. If I want to rewatch something, it's because it engaged me and it was well done.

War films are not my cup of tea. I saw this due to the reviews and the director... otherwise I would've skipped out.

Dunkirk did engage me and it was well done. But I have no need to see it again.

Finally seeing this today in 70 mm. I've been too busy this past week but I can't wait.
