So what is the "5th film to do it" stuff about? since there are a lot more than 5 non original films that have crossed £100M in 7 days.
5th to cross it in 2010. That can be the only explanation for such a statistic.

Are you sure they don't mean 5th film to do it in exactly 7 days, no more, no less?

Bleh, I'm drunk. Don't listen to me.

I believe they mean 5th film ever that's not a sequel or an adaptation of anything.

EDIT: That's also not in 3D.

Inception is so mind-blowingly cerebral, it's own box office statistic has sparked controversy and discussion.

I still don't believe that anything seen in at the end can tell us whether or not it is dream or reality for sure... long post in the spoiler

Many have come up with good reasons for why it is reality such as the wedding ring, but perhaps the lack of a wedding ring at the end only tells us that Cobb is convinced that he is in reality and therefore his subconscious expects him not to have one. All of the differences in the "real" world could possibly be due to his subconscious belief that he actually is in the real world, assuming that he is in control of that dream level. If he is in control of that dream level, then he can easily trick himself into thinking that he is in the real world if he truly believed it, correct?

It was explained in the movie that an Architect was needed to create a dream world, but once the world is generally created the dreamer would populate it themselves. That means that nobody needs to stay in the dream world with him to keep it running, they just need to set it up and then leave when they wish, and Cobb will maintain the dream. Therefore Cobb could remain in the dream world indefinitely by himself.

That being said, there are also major issues with the idea of the 4th dream level, and that at the end Cobb is still in the 1st level. If he is in fact in the first level, then it is only a matter of hours before he awakens from it. For him to remain there for an extended time, he must be several levels down already. The level at the end may be in actuality the 4th level, meaning that Cobb has actually been down to the 8th level (refered to as limbo). In all possiblity, all of the events shown in the movie take place from the 4th level down, and we never get to see reality.

This could possibly mean that Mal doesn't even exist and has always been a projection of his subconscious. Her suicide was simply a projection of his own doubts about the reality of the world around him. He may even know this himself to some degree, knowing that if he truly awakens Mal and his children will not be there. This is why he doesn't look back at the top, because he has tricked himself into believing that this is reality and doesn't wish to be convinced otherwise.

With all of this I don't believe the question is whether or not the end is reality or a dream, but only what level of the dream he is in. Does anybody truly believe that Saito had the power to clear Cobb of murder charges in the U.S. so easily? Wouldn't it be easier for Saito to instead use the dream world to convince Cobb that he was in the real world and had been cleared? The trick to all of this is that Cobb would eventually realize that he is in a dream world and would reject it. There is only one way to ensure that this doesn't happen...

Inception.

Saito needed to convince Cobb that remaining in the dream world was what he wanted. And he knew he could do it. He selected Cobb precisely for his weaknesses, knowing that he would be able to perform Inception on Cobb to get his services free of charge. Why else would Saito hire Cobb for the job when he failed the test in the beginning? If his intention was to find somebody with no weaknesses he would have hired somebody else. But he wasn't looking for somebody to pass the test, he was looking for a failure. He was looking for the perfect subject for Inception, and Cobb was it.

That's my theory, and seems to me the only theory that could possibly explain everything.

Angie's 'Salt' Seasons Friday Box Office; But Chris Nolan's 'Inception' Still Big No. 1
By Nikki Finke | Friday July 23, 2010 @ 10:44pm PST

FRIDAY PM: Hollywood expected Inception to hold well in the large markets and on both coasts. But Salt definitely put some pepper into Friday's and this weekend's estimated box office, according to my sources using early numbers:

1. Chris Nolan's Inception for Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures will still be the No. 1 movie for its 2nd weekend in release. It went into today having made $100+M in the U.S. and Canada in just 7 days -- only the 5th film and the only original 2D movie to accomplish that. Inception made a big $14.4M Friday for a Superglue-like hold of 34% compared to a week ago for what's expected to be a $40+M weekend and a new cume of $140M. Ah, what dreamy legs.

2. Sony Pictures set a new salary high for Angelina Jolie to star in this weekend's No. 2 movie Salt. Still, the studio was gobsmacked when she earned every penny, whether it was long autograph-signing sessions at the pic's premieres or making a much-hyped panel appearance at Comic-Con. That was just a few of the marketing moves Sony made to sell Salt but there were more by Jeff Blake and his staff: concocting a high-octane ad campaign, devising a 9-week episodic online game, junketeering in Washington DC with a reception/tour of the International Spy Museum, even exploiting that recent real-life Russian sleeper spy ring in the news because of its similarities to the movie plot. "The Anna Chapman story resulted in extensive off entertainment page coverage mentioning Salt," one Sony exec explained to me.

Jolie's pic had been tracking extremely well for weeks by garnering solid unaided awareness overall with total awareness strongest in older females and males, followed by younger males. (Younger females were a bit behind...) And now she's the only actress who can open a kickass actioner right now. And And open SALT she did with a $13.8M Friday and expected $35+M weekend. With a supposed cost of only a little over $100M (Sony claims that's because of production incentives from shooting back East), the studio is confident it has a hit here and overseas. Salt is opening in a few territories over the next few days (i.e. Colombia, India, Egypt, Jordan, Aruba, Jamaica, etc) while next week it releases in countries like Russia, Korea, Japan and Brazil. The film will continue to roll out all over the world through October. MORE

If that $14.4m number is legit, Inception is headed for $45-50m this weekend. That is absolutely stunning. The movie appears to have a great shot at $350m domestic now.

My goodness, Nolan has created a smart movie that is being eaten up by the Transformers crowd. Not sure how he pulled it off, but it's incredible.

Only the 5th film to make $100M in 7 days? there a re loads of films that have made more than that in a weekend, am I misreading the article in the wee hours?

The article has been updated for clarification:

It went into today having made $100+M in the U.S. and Canada in just 7 days -- only the 5th film and the only original 2D movie to accomplish that this year.

Am I the only one not surprised by the big box office numbers?

One of the few, I'm sure. I expected it to be good, and I definitely hoped it would be mainstream-friendly. But it takes absolute magic to strike a chord with the audiences in such a way that does not sacrifice artistic integrity. Even moreso when you have something as original and unconventional as this.

I'm pleasantly surprised. And I'm very glad to witness this first-hand. This type of film only comes once in a decade.

I think people over-estimated the stupidity of the GA. If you make a movie with stunning visual effects, great action, a superb cast, and an awesome concept, people are going to flock to it no matter how confused they be coming out of it.

So, what do you lot think the final gross should be?

I think, 280 million domestic, 300 million overseas.

580 million worldwide. but it could easily make more.

Right now I think it's headed for $300-350m domestic. I also think it's going to be pretty big overseas. The ending is simply buzzworthy and the spectacle is pretty amazing too. I think the Japanese will love it. Hopefully it gets released in China, which TDK did not. I think it has the potential to make $450m overseas. In other words, possibly as high as $800m worldwide (maybe even bigger depending on reception overseas).
