Moreover, even if the totem's feel and function is something no one else knows but you, how does that prove if you're dreaming? I can understand it setting off a red-flag in someone else's subconscious, but your subconscious is fully aware of the totem's existence. Cobb knows the spinning top is supposed to fall, it's feel, it's weight, it's density. Wouldn't his subconscious know that? Can't it be just as plausible that in his own dream world, the totem behaves as if it were in the real-world?
This would put into question the entire concept of a totem. If everyone knows how the totem is supposed to behave, then your subconscious should be aware of it too, thus making it useless.

Everyone in my theater was at the edge of their seats and in the end there were a bunch of AWWWWW and then a crap loan of people started clapping!

What a good film! A lock to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay!

I think Miles (Michael Caines character) has more to do with the ending than meets the eye. :word:

What do you mean?

There are a couple of situations in the movie where Cobb says or teaches one thing but then pretty much does the opposite of it. One example is when they are in stage 2 and Cobb is purposely bringing to Fischer's attention that he is in a dream. This was bringing attention to Arthur and Ariadne(he kissed her at this point) and Ariadne was questioning why Cobb was doing this(bringing attention to them) when Cobb had said before to not do this.

Exceptional box office take. Excellent total, but the daily breakdowns indicate other worldy worldly word of mouth.

AVATARS GOING DOWN!

I think the fact that this movie needs multiple viewings is gonna help its box office total. I'm sure there are a lot of people intrigued by this movie and wouldnt mind seeing it again to see if they can depict different things going on.

Wasn't it interesting in that scene where Cobb visited Yusuf and then he was put under that after he woke up and splashed his face with water he started spinning the top but it got knocked over before we got to see the final result.

I was thinking the same thing on second viewing. For all we know
he could still be asleep in that den of Yusuf's. Remember how they mentioned all those guys sharing the same dream are usually put under for about 4 hours. How long would that measure up to the different levels of the dream world? The flight alone(if that was the first level really)was what, an 8-10 hour trip? That would equate to some heavy time in the real world. He could have been asleep for way more than 4 hours in that den.

Kinda funny, to me, that I'm sitting here on this board while listening to "Time" from the score...I might be dreaming...or in someone else's...DAMN, I DON'T HAVE A TOTEM! Ah well, no work tomorrow I guess. Just got to watch out for those projections!

When I saw the midnight show, everyone screamed "No!" when we saw the totem still spinning. Then a loud applause. It was like being at a sporting event, not a movie! Awesome!

As far as the ending,
I think Cobb was awake when he went home. For one thing, he saw his kids' faces, which was something he could never do in his dreams. Also it seemed like the spinning top was about to fall over before the credits rolled.

Actually .....

He didn't want to purposely look at the kids faces unless he was sure it was "reality" .... which at the end of the day was completely up to him.

saw it a second time a few hours ago, very satisfied to see that it holds up to be just as awesome on a repeated viewing. Happy to also see that my suspicions of underestimating the weekend total was also correct, 62.7 million, very nice.

AVATARS GOING DOWN!

? What in the hell is with the hate hard on towards Avatar? Let it go, worry more about Inception still pulling in 60 mil a weekend 2 weeks from now if your really that "delusional" :oldrazz: to think it could catch up.

One of the best uses of the meme I've seen in a long while. Perfectly sums up the collective response to the ending. :funny:

It's definitely questionable, though I feel like I haven't completely grasped the function of the totem. I may have completely missed the brief explanation.

Arthur's weighted die makes sense. As he is the only one that knows how it lands, he'll immediately know if he's in someone else's subconscious. If he were, that subconsciousness would conceivably just roll a random number, not knowing it was weighted. Ok, I get that.

However, Cobb's spinning top isn't exactly something exclusive. His conclusion of the real vs. dream seems to rely on it falling. But all spinning tops do this. I'm not sure why it would keep spinning if it's a dream, it doesn't fit any of the rules (again I could have missed this).

Moreover, even if the totem's feel and function is something no one else knows but you, how does that prove if you're dreaming? Well, I do think the point of the totem really is
just to know that you're not in a dream that's shared/manipulated by someone else.

That said, I think Cobb's totem is a total red herring.

Posted this before, but never got an answer. Anyone?

I thought the fourth level was the space shared by Cobb and Mal? Wasn't the last level where Cobb is brought to Saito limbo? If the fourth level was limbo, why didn't Ariadne and Cobb see Saito there? Sorry if this has been answered already...

Ariadne and Cobb had to go looking for Mal and Fischer. Cobb knew where to find Mal, and knew she'd be holding Fischer hostage, seeing as how she shot him in the third level. She killed him and sent him to limbo, so it was only natural she'd be holding him hostage there. Saito's death had nothing to do with Mal, so Cobb needed to go looking for him.

AVATARS GOING DOWN!
"Inception" probably won't touch "Avatar". Know why? It's not in 3D. The biggest reason why "Avatar" made so much was because of the 3D ticket prices. Personally, I think the only major contender over the next couple of years that can knock "Avatar" off the top is the final Harry Potter movie next July.

Aha. So it was just a matter of specifying who to find.

In the same limbo correct? Meaning there aren't multiple types of limbo but just a universal one.

One obscure thing about that movie that I thought was cool was how Nolan casted Leo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Lukas Haas together in a film. These guys at one point in time were all major child stars in film. Leo obviously the most successful of the three.

Angels in the Outfield is the best thing JGL has ever done. :o

I think we're all a little confused over that detail. The next time I see the movie, I'm going to be paying particular attention to the dialogue. :funny:

Next time someone watches the movie...can they check up on Cobb's wedding ring...I remember hearing that the ring is on and off throughout the movie...

I made sure to look for that on second viewing and
that very last scene where he spins the top, you can't get a look at his left hand so you have no idea if it's on or off at that point.
