Chronicle - faux-supers documentary

“He wrote a sequel and it’s amazing," the elder Landis told the outlet, "and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.’"

F***in FOX.

I'm not shocked. That's the problem with sleeper hits like Chronicle and Taken. (Both Fox)

Once they were filmed under the radar and became critical darlings, that's when the studio jumps in and wants a part of the creative and $$$ action. When the Punk original goes on to conform with the sequel.

If you look at Taken 2, look how less violent it 'seems'. Sure there's plenty still action, but it seems more..controlled by the system.

I just hope the Fox network doesn't dick around with Landis as much as the movie studio has...

'Homeland's' Howard Gordon, 'Chronicle' Scribe Sell 'Superhero' Police Drama to Fox (Exclusive)
4:57 PM PDT 9/17/2012 by Lesley Goldberg

Max Landis will pen "Vigilant," a story about a girl who creates a vigilante persona to take on criminal elements of the city and its corrupt police department.

Homeland's Howard Gordon is continuing to have a busy development season.

Just days after selling a family adventure to Fox, the prolific producer is teaming with Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis for Vigilant, which has received a script plus penalty order at the network.

The project is described as a "superhero" origin story told through the unlikely point of view of a smart 20-year-old woman who happens to be a social outcast. After an honorable veteran detective is brutally coerced into working for the corrupt head of Internal Affairs, the detective's daughter plans her revenge by creating a fictional vigilante persona to take on the criminal elements within the police department and the city.

Landis created the idea and will pen the script and executive produce alongside 20th TV-based Gordon through his Teakwood Lane shingle. Teakwood head of television Hugh Fitzpatrick is on board as a co-executive producer.

Chronicle, starring Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights), was released earlier this year and has grossed $126 million. Landis, repped by WME, Circle of Confusion and Behr & Abramson, is penning the script for a sequel.

For Gordon, Vigilant marks his fourth sale this development season and second at Fox. He also has a thriller with Josh Friedman as well as a legal drama set up at NBC as well as a drama set up at TNT. Gordon is repped by WME.
Because this sounds awesome.

Uh, we're taking of word of Landis' (famous) father who isn't involved with the project, has no fight in this battle and frankly no reason to even be saying this? Not to mention, he can't be objective since this is about his son. Why exactly is he fighting his son's battles? He's a big boy.

Something doesn't add up here.

True, but if older Landis had just said they didn't like it, it wouldn't seem like a typical studio move of just pumping out the same thing since audiences liked it the first time.

The price you pay for getting a hit in this business. You kinda have to sacrifice some **** if you want to keep making the **** you want to.

Gonna take a stab in the dark and say the script wasn't found footage and ditched that. If THAT is the case, I'd say kudos to Fox.The story can remain intact just need to find and invent ways to do it in an interesting fashion. If it's "we need another Andrew" then yeah... they've lost their minds. Basically- if fox is shouting for found footage- great, if it's "repeat the plot" eh.... I'm officially black listing them from possibly working with them ever.

arent 90% of popular sequels similar to the original movie? FOX is doing what everyone who invests millions would do.

but hey i watched a good movie called Looper days ago so i dont care about sequels.

I think Max wants to challenge Fox and this asked his dad to mention Chronicle 2 publicly to create bad buzz for the studio. It happens all the time.

Gotta love this pull in power ala nepotism. And from some accounts, I've head that Max isn't the most well liked person either. Talented nevertheless

Yup because Fox is the only studio to do this out of how many studios and how many movies there have been over the years.
:whatever: Well, they certainly seem like the worst. If you want Chronicle all over again, be my guest. I'll take Landis's "evolution".

I just hope the script is better for the sequel than it was for the first one. I found it pretty average beyond the basics.

DC will like that - it should be on the back of one of their trades. Before I let you go, I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you about "Chronicle 2." Recently your father, John Landis, speaking to "The Playlist," shared that your screenplay for the "Chronicle" sequel wasn't exactly what the folks at Fox were expecting. Can you update us on the project?

I have no idea what's happening with "Chronicle 2." We'll see.

just caught this on hbo this was an amazing movie great acting, good script, great chemistry between the 3 leads and on a msall budget the action was great

Yeah, Trank did a great job with this one. Makes me more excited for his Fantastic Four.

Funny I just rewatched Chronicle a couple days ago.

CHRONICLE Writer Max Landis Says Sequel Is Moving Forward Without Him
by Brendan Bettinger Posted 38 minutes ago

Chronicle surprised in February 2012, grossing $127 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. Fox announced a sequel shortly after the release, hiring Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis to script the follow-up. Development slowed over the last year and a half, though. A rumor surfaced that Fox was unhappy with Landis’ script for Chronicle 2. Landis responded to claim that Fox liked the script, but the dark tone raised the question, “How do we all compromise to get something we want?”

Landis and Fox were unable to find that compromise, as Landis revealed on Twitter that while Chronicle 2 is “still probably happening,” Fox hired other writers and will not be moving forward with Landis’ script. If you are unfamiliar with Landis’ persona, he is refreshingly candid, so his Twitter stream is worth a look after the jump.

Damn, he was a big part of why the first movie was so good, so immediatly with both him and Trank not involved my anticipation for this has gone way down.

I have this feeling Fox wants to go a superhero route.

I'm not a fan of Landis at all. What made this movie was the how it made found footage work. The writing, I thought was the weakest aspect.

I have this feeling Fox wants to go a superhero route.

That's exactly it. Chronicle was not a super-hero movie really and probably shared more in common with a movie like carrie. However at some point the decision to market it as a super-hero film was made.

I can totally see the studio pushing it towards that direction for a sequel as a more full-on superhero film. That aspect makes a sequel even more unnecessary.

Chronicle was lightening in a bottle with that necessary combo of good script, directors and actors. A sequal without Landis or Trank has DTV/Syfy movie written all over it.

I say 'YAY' to fox for doing Chronicle again without that ****ing found footage rubbish that kept pulling me out of the movie again and again and again.

'Oh look, I'm plummeting 1000 feet in a car, I think I'll film my last moments'

'Oh look, I'm being chased by a big monster, I think I'll film the whole thing, turning back every now and then with my camera to see if I'm still being chased'

I hate found footage so much.
