GOTG is also a movie I don't understand the hype around. I like the main characters but the movie has one if not the worst villains in any CBM of all time and the movie has like no story and the action is not that great either.

I understand it only in the sense that it took the superhero/cbm genre in an entirely different direction at the precise time people were ready for something quite different. I liked the movie but I'd still put in in the lower half of the MCU with films like TtDW, TIH, IM3 & IM2, etc. I like all those too but I wouldn't call any of them great like I'd call the upper half of the MCU films.

It is The Dark Knight and The Avengers at the top like 1a and 1b. Followed by Spiderman 2, Iron Man, Gotg, DOFP, and bevy of others right below them.

For me 1a is dark knight rises 1b spiderman 2. Slight edge to dark knight rises because it has the better soundtrack. For me avengers, GOTG and iron man are all up there for most overrated CBM of all time. My top 3 most overrated CBM of all time go like this.

1. Iron man
2. GOTG
3. Avengers

I hear you about the being different thing but I would put deadpool while above GOTG for CBM.

I would too, and DP made more $ dom & WW(as long as it makes more than $13m in Japan, that is)so it seems like the world agrees with us. I mean, I didn't think DP was great either but I'd give it a slight edge over GotG. DP had just as lackluster a villain as GotG did. But DP is still a terrestrial-superhero-in-a-costume movie at the end of the day. GotG did away with all of that and left Earth behind entirely, except for the first couple of minutes. GotG was basically a window to the greater Marvel Universe through the eyes of a very Earthman-like character in Peter Quill, and clearly people wanted that.

While I agree that DP villain wasn't great either but at least he wasn't beaten by a dance of lol and the movie had more of a story then gardens did to. Also DP got a 83 on RT where gardens got a 91 so there for gardens is more overrated then you could say DP is.

I thought GOTG was Marvel's most chidlish movie and I really don't like Gunn's sense of humor - specifically in some of the dialogue he wrote.

Most overrated in my opinion:

1) Spider-man 2
2) Batman Begins
3) GotG

Well with the RT score, you also have to factor in that one is R-rated and the other is PG-13. That'll just put some people off right from the get-go.

I'd say:

1. TDK(this one's in it's own galaxy as not only do I think it's massively overrated, not only do I think it's not even a good movie, but I consider it one of the worst CBM's of all time...and no, higher production values than crap like Steel do not cut it any more slack from me. IMO, it's dogs**t.)

2. Spider-man 2
3. X-Men 2
4. Batman'89
5. X-Men: Days of Future, Past

Hands down Gotg >>>>>>>>>>> Deadpool. Deadpool was not a good film, I don't see why people think so highly of it. It was generic as they come despite an amazing performance by Ryan Reynolds.

Yeah I never got the raving praises of Deadpool either. Not that it was a bad movie or anything, it's just that it was an okay movie.

I know I'm in the minority but I liked both Red Skull and Ronan. They're classically comic-booky. Colorful and over the top.

Maybe because I'm a Cap fan but Steve pre serum jumping on the grenade, him dealing with Bucky's death, making the decision in the end and saying I had a date.

I liked Cap:TFA and gave it a 7/10. I re-watched it a couple of months ago and it held up for me (mostly for the character moments like the ones you mentioned) but at the same time it could have been a lot better. It had the exact same problems as SM1 and Batman Begins....good/great origin story but once the heroes put on their costumes all of those movies become generic action films and the action in all three films was pretty damn lackluster (Cap's action scenes being the best of all three excluding that mediocre montage).

SM1's action scenes were bland and static. You have Spider-man vs Goblin with no aerial battles? Every scene they're stuck in one location for a static fist fight. Spider-man 2 did it right.

Batman could hardly move in his clunky suit and Nolan shot the action so terrible and cut it up into little pieces in the editing so it was the worst of the three.

Cap's action in TFA doesn't compare to TWS but it was at least competently shot and had some re-play value.

IMO what TFA loses against TWS in terms of action it makes up for in terms of atmosphere. It just oozes that old-timey vibe and has more than any other Marvel film(MCU or not) a very distinct tone to it. For me that makes up for any lackluster action. It's almost as if the entire film was shot barely...just barely in soft focus.

TFA is the only film that's backdated. So how are you going to compare it's "old timey vibe" to other films?

That's why I included non-MCU films. XMFC and DOFP are both period pieces as well. But I like TFA way better than either of those. Superman: The Movie also could be considered a 1970's period piece now and I like TFA about the same as that movie.

The problem is that Marvel to this point has not done a great service to those antagonists because they're not really pushing the heroes to the brink for the most part. I look at a character like Ultron, who was arguably the MCU's most layered villain (as well as Loki), however the climactic fight left so much to be desired after he inevitably became a metal football to punt around. I get a sense Feige for the most part likes to mock the villains.

I love the Red Skull and thought Hugo Weaving did an amazing job with what little they gave him. However, Marvel needs to understand that their heroes are only as good as their villains. The Russo's spoke about wanting to inject a freshness into the MCU with Civil war, as well as their conversations with Feige about not playing it too safe. I would like to see those words put into action. They get their chance with Thanos.

See I disagree here. That statement is more true of the DC heroes. Marvel heroes sort of split the driving conflict of the movie(any of their movies, really) between villains and the natural reality based consequences of being a superhero in a relatively reality-based world. The DC heroes pretty much NEED their villains to steal the show in order for their films to work. The Marvel heroes don't. They have plenty of conflicts to overcome(both internal & external) even before you bring in a villain.

I disagree with his sentiment as well. I'd even say that the MCU has the best rendition of the comic book heroes out of all the franchises.

wow about dark knight I do find it overrated some but that is because the way I think about that more is more how people tend to think about rises and the way I think about rises is how a lot of people think about dark knight. SM2 I really don't know how people say it is overrated. It still has the best fight of any CBM and that is impressive considering the movie is like 12 years old and how fast tech improves. Heck ever fight in the movie is really good. Also has one of the best villains of any CBM and the way harry and peter where handled after what happened in spider man 1 was great. Batman 89 I was never that much into but really pre dark knight trilogy batman I was never that impressed with to begin with and now I have a hard time even watching any of the pre dark knight trilogy batman because they are crap in comparison. Xmen 2 have only seen it once but I find it kind of boring. DOFP I love and I have a hard time deceding if I like it better or not then cap winter solider.
