Closure on the Spidey Marriage

Joe Q's been saying in no uncertain terms that he dislikes Peter Parker being married as the status quo. He sees their 1987 as an empty publicity stunt of it's time, yet fails to see how Black Panther & Storm's marriage was exactly that; at least when MJ "reappeared" in the late 80's, she and Peter had a long, established history. Yes, the marriage happened quickly, but much as like many well known comic marriages, like Lois & Clark, Reed & Sue, and Scott & Jean, it had that "it's about time" quality to it. T'Challa and Ororo, by contrast, had a lone MTU story from 1980, which had to be embellished with retcons. The pair seemed slapped together because they are both regal characters from Africa more than anything else, which felt insulting and poorly handled. Rather than attempt to blossum a romance, their destiny was presumed.

Joe Q has also stated that divorcing Peter or breaking them up via death (which happened 5-7 years ago, Mackie's last gasp) would be worse than keeping them married. But considering the guy has at times bragged about his ablity to mislead the internet audience for his own gain, it makes it hard to take a lot of his words seriously. For good or ill.

In my case, I can't make the "fanboy threat" to dump the book should they seperate. I essentially parted ways with ASM and most of the Spider-Books in the mid 90's during the Clone Mess, because that felt like they were taking Spider-Man away from his roots, jumped the final shark and moved him in an opposite direction from what I liked. So aside for sporatic buys and flip throughs, that is where I have been. I've gotten ASM for the CW tie in's, but I'm likely gone when they are done.

Of course, as others have said, if Joe Q himself is drawing it, expect delays.

What is funny is that USM was seemingly created to tailor make the perennial young, single teenager that Joe Q and Marvel wanted, and now that theory has been tossed to the wind.

Dread Ultimate spider-man sucks these days, they started the Ultimate clone saga, and all this random **** is happening. M.J. became a mutant monster, spider-clones are showing up, its just so bad lol. Bendis just doesn't care anymore, hes seems to busy with the 616 books.

You didn't understand his last sentence did you.

He's saying that USM was made to change the marriage and the aging of Spidey (in part at least) yet he's still with MJ and such.

Okay, but Im saying ultimate spider-man sucks.

Eros your preaching to the choir, plus Dread is way ahead of ya on the USM thing.

Why does ultimate spider-man suck? Not because of M.J. or Peters relationship or non realtionship, but because of terrible writing these days.

I've gone on page long essays detailing how much I have hated USM for the past 3 months now.

Still, USM was supposed to produce the kind of Spidey that Joe seemed to have wanted, and it outsold ASM until they revived it with 1-2 years worth of crossovers and CLONE SAGA happened. Just because USM is tanking doesn't mean they should "ultimize" ASM; why not give Bendis a co-writer or convince him that he is out of ideas and, sales be damned, Marvel stands for integrity?

Right, nevermind. Sometimes Marvel gets it right, and other times they get it so damn wrong that it's shocking, it makes Sentry & The Void look like happy twins.

I don't need "closure" on the Spider marriage. Peter & MJ loved each other for a long time, he turned to her eventually after Gwen died and Felicia got weird, and they married. They love each other and have lived through thick and thin for each other. What is there to get? Maybe it's the EIC, who keeps finding new ways to revert back to 1974, who needs closure here.

Yes bad writing and to much bull**** useless talking, 30 year old men that talk like 15 year old girls. I love USM, I always will, I'll never give it up but Bendis does need to take a hike.

I gave up USM soon after that Hobgoblin arc with Harry. It started turning sour after they tied the Gwen Stacy death in with the appearance of Carnage then somehow made Carnage just another (pretty much so) clone of Peter or his dad. THAT is what did it for me.
Am I the only one who's ok with Pete and MJ's marriage? I mean...come on...HE'S in love with Mary Jane. What kind of everyman isn't?

...Fock.

Considering that the last time JMS and Joe Quesada joined forces to change everything we knew about Marvel’s greatest hero was Sins Past, let's have a show of hands as to who here thinks this will end up well.

I think it's utterly hilarious/horrible/pathetic that they're trying to paint up Spidey's marriage as this alarmingly controversial and heated fandom war or something. The only reason that the marriage had been getting more "controversy" (and I use that term...reticently) than similar unions like Lois/Clark or Scott/Jean...the only reason...is because Joe Q has been yapping it up like no tomorrow, trying to stir the pot like a bratty thirteen year-old. As only he knows how.

Seriously. Can we just NOT do anymore crossovers for a while? The least Marvel could do is give us a break or kick it up and start focusing more on quality than quantity. I really don't want comics to turn into some race towards "Who can get the best collection of issues in one volume."

Even if they end up destroying the marriage, I do hope that they truly reinvigorate Spidey, because we all know he needs it. I'd like to see just about everything that happened to Spidey from the last, oh... two/three years? gone.

I wouldn't mind "Sins Past" and "The Other" being reduced to fever dreams.

(Hopefully not happening:whatever::woot:)

I think Gwen Stacy lives. Maybe even other long dead Marvel supporting characters. Why? Because House of M wasn't done THAT long ago if you throw it into a time line. I think Joe Q. might ditch MJ, whatever way he wants to, and Petey meets with a Gwen or some other random new girl from his past. From their we move into romance...yadda yadda yadda...new writer says "Bullsh**" has some kinda thing happen that breaks it up, as Spidey sets alone outside a pizza shop, sitting in the rain. MJ (or her ghost) comforts peter in that stereotypically mundane fashion, and (depending if she's alive or not) either walks away invigorated or still with his wife.

OR Marvel might play up on those doubts, randomly as they come, of doubt Spidey get's about who he loves more, MJ or Gwen, usually with Gwen winning out, and there's a huge emotional backlash from MJ that ends their marriage without an actual final word, and just a seperation.

Personally, I could care less if MJ died or lived, or divorced or just plain seperated with Peter. I always felt there were better supporting characters in Spidey comics, until recently anyways, and that MJ was there to give a bit more meaning to spidey's life, but that she didn't.

But they've been married way to long to not have kids. By now they should have had atleast 1 kid. I don't care about the unborn child in clone saga either. Spidey needs a kid...although if they are ending the marriage, that get's thrown out the window SO fast... but then they've got an excuse.

Obviously my opinion. Don't harp on it too much.

Well he was with Kitty, he is just now getting back with MJ.

Yea it seems like USM comes out like every three weeks, slow down, like you said give us quality not quantity, but dont make us wait months inbetween issues, like the Ultimates or Ult Hulk vs Wolverine.

I dont think thats gonna happen.

The organic web was a good idea though.

I really hope they don't screw up this marriage. I mean to me Amazing Spider-man should be about Spider-man and his adventures fighting villains, not Peter Parker and MJ.

Well if she is killed off than you wont have to worry about that.

They said this will be the final word on the relationship between Peter and MJ, a divorce isnt final they could always get back together, and it would inevitably happen if they divorced for whatever reason, whether its because his life as Spidey is to dangerous or they just dont get along anymore, the only thing that is really final is death, kinda, but you get the point. So if they are serious about that comment, I really dont see anything but death for MJ.

Coma, and lets be real, in in real time we have to wait 3 months, in Marvel time only a couple weeks pass. My dad was in a coma for about 2-3 weeks, it would be believable for MJ to be in a coma for a couple weeks or even a couple months.

I completely agree with you.

Not that I really want it to happen, but if Marvel was THAT desperate for a Gwen thing, there is a Gwen clone wandering around since about 1996 or so that hasn't done much. It'd make more sense than a HOM thing, as horrible as that sounds. I wouldn't like it, though.

Cool, hey W, dont you love War Machine?

not particularly. Didn't we already have this discussion?:oldrazz: I find him and US Agent are just copy cat's of original and better characters. I like the color scheme better, not particularly fond of red and gold, but otherwise Tony is much better.
