Annihilators by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning

DnA know how to write Kl'rt properly , but he isn't written well most of the time IMO. He's the Skrull Empire's first super soldier so he should be able to fight WAY better than he's portrayed in other books. It makes sense that he'd lose to the FF or even that time he fought Silver Surfer , but he's lost to Luke Cage and Spiderman one on one.

Yeah , Kl'rt has Thing level strength , but he loses to Spidey and Luke Cage. With his combination of powers he should be able to beat those two easily.

I don't know much about the Space Knights , but no way should one of them be able to do that to a team like the Annihilators one on one.
Especially since the whole point of the Annihilators was to correct the mistakes of the Guardians and Nova's solo act and bring together a team so powerful as to be virtually unbeatable. It's at the friggin' core of the whole series!

Rom could do it. Not those other pansies. They got their butts kicked by Dire Wraiths.

:thing: :thing: :thing:

How powerful is Rom anyway ? Herald level maybe ?

Eh.

Strong as Luke Cage.
Fights as well as Wolverine.
Agile as the Human Torch.
Endurance stronger than Iron Man.
Self Repairing.

His gun will kill ya but he won't use it's full power on people.

I'd say in the Ronin area of power.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

GEEZ PLEASE keep HAUT away from Thor characters PLEASE!!!

That reminds me. Wonder what that abomination-of-a-character Wraith is doing
Hopefully he's a lifeless corpse floating on the edge of the Rip, ready to fall into oblivion.

James Hunter caught a note of interest, saying "I read, on your formspring site (a bit of promotion for you there!) that Thanos is coming back. What I would like to know is how likely it is either Nova or Starlord will be coming back with him? (personally, I'd like to see Rich back, especially if Nick Spencer were to decide he wants to re-use him in SECRET AVENGERS)"

Brevoort: Sorry, James, but at this point I’m afraid you’re asking for spoilers, and I’m not typically going to give those out, sorry. As it is, I may have said too much just mentioning Thanos. So you’re going to have to wait and see, I’m afraid.

Just some food for thought.

Interesting. I never thought Nova and Star-Lord would be dead forever. We didn't even see any bodies. I mean, deaths where we SAW BODIES, such as Steve Rogers, have been undone with comic story hokum. So why should we assume different with a cosmic explosion?

Hell, Quasar has cheated death more times than Jean Grey. Seriously.

But people like Quasar, so that's okay.

Eh, I think most people are indifferent to Quasar.

Fine, they tolerate him more than Jean.

At any rate, I just assumed that Thanos, Nova, and/or Star-Lord were dead in the same sense that Hercules was dead; blasted to some other plane somewhere. I mean, they literally were in another universe, same as Hercules was. Even if Thanos destroyed the Cancerverse, if the two survived, they'd be lost in a void of nothingness (like the void where, way back, the Fury beat Mad Jim Jaspers) or even Oblivion (who merrily resurrected Moondragon when Ultron tore out her beating heart in CONQUEST).

It makes me think that the Cosmic line will not be ending with Annihilators. That there will be another mini or series down the line that will bring back all of the above mentioned.

Plus the universe is not the same without some Star-Lord/Rocket Raccoon bromance.

I honestly don't think Marvel wants to cancel their Cosmic line cold turkey. Sales on THANOS IMPERATIVE were too consistent to advocate that. It didn't sell like WAR OF KINGS did, but it also sold better than the last arc or so of NOVA and GOTG (at a higher cover price and lower cost, as it was one series and not two). The Cosmic audience has remained low, but consistent around the low 30k range to middle 20k range for years now, at least since 2008-2009. Merging what was to be two mini's into one was likely done to save costs and maximize the book's intake. If ANNIHILATORS does well, I imagine it will be followed up upon. I mean, they gave Greg Pak a stab at SILVER SURFER, and he hasn't headlined a series in years.

I mean, Marvel is a company that is still selling MARVEL ZOMBIES material, and still makes sure Tom DeFalco and Chris Claremont are still working for them. Given that Abnett & Lanning, between ongoings and mini's, have at times written 4-5 titles at once, I doubt they'd prohibit them from working on more cosmic stuff, so long as NEW MUTANTS and HEROES FOR HIRE was still timely.

Quite frankly, the Cosmic line has often done better than Spider-Man spin off's have.

If they're on earth, they're not really cosmic anymore.

At any rate, it looks interesting and is probably inevitable. It looks like Marvel isn't satisfied with a regular, loyal, consistent audience of 22-24k a month. They have to go double or nothing. On everything. Reminds me of those baseball players who either hit home runs or nothing at all - half of whom are NY Yankees now.

Of course, aside for SECRET INVASION, Earth has gotten off pretty lightly in terms of cosmic menaces, many of whom were defeated by heroes who on earth are "nobodies" like Nova, Quasar, Darkhawk, or Jack Flag. This could also tie into FF if the reborn Annihilus manages to invade earth. The space heroes would realize once he is done with earth his horde would resume an Annihilation Wave elsewhere, so it would spark their attention. Ironically, Nova sent the Fantastic Four a warning/SOS during Annihilation, but as this was in the midst of Civil War, Mr. Fantastic claimed not to have gotten it or something.

I wouldn't call Quasar a nobody, he was a pretty prominent Avenger for a while in the early 90's. While Nova was stuck mainly on the New Warriors he was always a fan favorite. It took until Annihilation for him to be elevated to where he is now by a writer other than Erik Larsen, that dude had a huge ***** for Nova for the longest time.

I do agree that Darkhawk and Jack are nobodies....

Technically, Darkhawk has been on earth since last year. As NOVA wrapped, he and Nova were defending Project PEGASUS from a tentacled demon from the Cancerverse as well as "Dark Quasar" from there. Darkhawk was injured protecting the site and Dr. Necker, and Nova left her to tend to him as he pursued Dark Quasar. Powell hasn't been among the mourners at Nova & Star-Lord's space funeral, so it's something which has been left to limbo.

Jack Flag popped up on panel I think in THANOS IMPERATIVE #1 and then has been forgotten since. Which was a shame, I thought he was an unlikely but amusing member of the GOTG. The fact that it was so random and improbable made it work.

Quasar had his own series from 1989-1994, but...so did EVERYONE back then. Sleepwalker lasted 33 issues, for heaven's sakes (which is amazing when you consider Moon Knight barely lasts that long between relaunches anymore, or even Wolverine titles). Before ANNIHILATION, he hadn't done much besides stand in mass Avengers panels for years. Not that this harms him as a space hero, merely proves that space fixes everything. Even the Hulk got cooler in space. Even some spare X-Men like Havok and Polaris got cooler in space. It's a place where threats are epic, and feats of heroism are usually reacted to in saner ways.

At any rate, I doubt the average citizen at Marvel or half the Avengers as written by Bendis know who Quasar is anymore. That might be funny in a way. Have the Annihilators beam into Midtown and have nobody around them know who they are, but then have Wolverine, an infinitely weaker but over-popular hero, walk around the corner and he gets a crowd. I could imagine the snide comments from Gladiator or Ronan now. ;)

Plus, I do wonder if the walking time paradox Namorita has bothered seeing Namora since she's been hanging out at Project PEGASUS too (with Nova's brother Robbie mostly).

The difficulty with ANNIHILATORS has been similar to some of the hiccups with ANNIHILATION CONQUEST or WAR OF KINGS. The lead characters are not the characters Abnett & Lanning are best writing. And while they can still make a good story of it, it doesn't quite come together like an arc of NOVA or GOTG did. ROCKET & GROOT, on the other hand, has been fun.

I would find it interesting to see this all come full circle with a new Annihilation wave starting at Earth instead of ending near there. While it would feel off not having Nova or Star-Lord there (as far as we know), I think it could be a good story. I wouldn't mind it at all.
