'Cloverfield' Sequel in the Works with Batman TV Showrunner (Exclusive)

Cloverfield, the J. J. Abrams-produced horror hit released in 2008 that launched filmmaker Matt Reeves on the path of genre auteur, is getting a sequel.

Abrams’ Bad Robot banner and Paramount Pictures have tapped rising British scribe Joe Barton to pen the script for the project, which, unlike its predecessor, will not be in the found footage format, according to sources.

Abrams will produce. Reeves is not involved in the project.

I pray there’s no acknowledgment of the third film. But otherwise, **** yeah, I’m on board.

As long as it's a direct sequel and not that spiritual successor stuff. They should've let Drew Goddard write it.

So is it a sequel sequel or is it just set in the multiverse like 10 Cloverfield? The article seems to sugest an actual sequel, but idk if I buy it yet.

Wasn't Overlord initially supposed to be in the mutliverse too?

In any case, sure why not. I'm on board. I hope they don't try and explain all of the events too much. I remember for years they just wanted to tell a POV sequel of the same night from someone else's perspective.

If I was Paramount I would make a CLoverfield anthology show on Paramount+. Basically what they were trying to do with the movies but just in TV episodes/seasons

13 years........ no more slapping the cloverfield name on scripts that never would’ve gotten made without a brand name. No more tacked on references that tonally clash with what was originally written.

A. True. Sequel.

God I can’t want to finally see what happened after Manhattan. I think I need to lie down, I feel like I just drank more than six slushos

Following that ARG from summer 07 into new years 08 is still the greatest internet experience I’ve ever had. Totally revolutionized the film lead up experience. I can’t even imagine what they’ll be able to do these days. So excited.

maybe we’ll finally find out if Rob paid back that dude he owed 11 dollars to. So many questions!!

Love Cloverfield so very excited for a direct sequel to that film. Also love Cloverfield Lane though and didn’t love but do enjoy Paradox as well. Glad though hopefully this will be back to the monster.

It's about damn time we got a direct sequel. I liked 10 Cloverfield Lane, but Cloverfield Paradox made me realize just why its a bad idea to slap every other original project with the Cloverfield name name on it just so they can sell it and even if its trash which is what Paradox was.

I do wish Reeves was atleast a little involved though, but its cool that there still a connection there with The Batman showrunner doing it and man I still love that first movie so much that I'll honestly take a sequel even if its almost 15 years later. It still holds up pretty well too IMO.

As a native New Yorker who was here for 9/11, that movie holds up VERY well. Cloverfield and Rosemary’s Baby are the only two films to make my adult ass keep the lights on after I watch them.

The original is one of my absolute favorites. At the very least I'm curious about a proper sequel.

I caught the first film on TV the other day. I liked it when it came out and it's still good today,I think. I still get such a 9/11 feel from it and I've always wondered why they never did a direct sequel.

I still remember watching the first Transformers movie and that teaser that played before it. Me and my grandpa as well as the rest of the audience was like wtf but was also like I need to see that movie. Just a fantastic tease that they don’t do anymore.

I'm upset that site isn't up anymore. At least the MySpace pages are still there. Best viral marketing ever.

If this is really happening, what I'm wondering is how they will explore the aftermath of the Hammerdown Protocol. I wouldn't mind if they went with a documentary-esque route, but only if baby Clover ends up being the last of his kind and no other monster pops up.

I’m still confused as to how Clover got here. Either he crashed here from space and landed in Coney Island, or he was already here and was awakened by Tagruato doing that drilling.

It would be nice to know.

I think canon from behind-the-scenes commentary of Abrams and others is that he was hibernating on the ocean floor for thousands of years and was awoken by Tagruato's drilling.

Abrams clarified somewhere that the falling object was a satellite.

It was the Cloverfield Station right?

But then didn’t they say Clover came from outer space? But he also could’ve landed here years and years ago and just stayed dormant.
