What do you think of Color-blind casting

  • Nay

  • Yay

  • I don't care

  • Depends on the setting and theme of the movie

I didn't say that.

Okay, great example.

Wentworth Miller. He's black. Yet his character on Prison Break is white. Yet he was obviously the best person for the role.

Alright, I misunderstood. :oldrazz:

Just seemed that way. :whatever:

We are talking about established parts. We aren't talking about new parts.

I'm sure plenty of white people audtioned for the role of president in Deep Impact, But Morgan Freeman brought more to the role so he was cast. That's not what we're discussing.

We will all be long and dead before Warner Bros. is reading for the next Superman movie, and some black actor (I have no idea who would fit the bill) is signed the role over the established white version.

Um I created this thread how are you gonna tell me what this thread is about?

I asked about thoughts on completely casted color-blind movie. Established and non-established parts were not specified but they are included. I'm not trying to get snippy with you about.

Your statement about Morgan Freeman brings a point though.

His father is black and his mother is white, he is just as much white as he is black. So it's not a fair example.

Latinos are from Latin American countries. Hispanics are the ones from Spanish speaking ones.

Easy misconception since Mexico is close to Latin America.

well seeing as most Latin American countries are Spanish-speaking, the terms can be used interchangeably in some instances.

But he was saying that he is among of group of Americans who refer to all people of Hispanic or Latino background as Mexicans.

Abaddon! Calm yourself!

I know. Just a little equal rights in my race based casting. Don't want them all to be white or black... might be called racist. ;)

I'm calm!! I'm ****ing calm i tells ya!!!:cmad:

k, but that example doesn't work.:o:oldrazz:

Our back and forth was about the difference between established and non-established. I know what the thread started out as, but the past 2 pages of us talking hasn't been about that.

And he's just as much black as he is white. So would it matter if he were cast as a solely white character?

He was cast as a white man based on LOOKS. Because he could APPEAR as white. They would not have cast Charlie Murphy for his role if they wanted the character to be white. They could cast Miller if they wanted the character to be white, though.

Color-Blind casting occurs pretty often with non-established characters. New character from a book adaption or just ones made up (Gasp, a script writer having an original idea) are quite often racially void simply because you never know who will be best for the part.

But color-blind casting for a well established role is something most people couldn't handle and wouldn't understand.

Okay. Well I hope that one day that color shouldn't matter when it comes to anything, but I doubt that even with that minorites are soon to become the majority. Because when it comes to film it should be about who can truely act the best not who actually looks the part because that is what makeup is for.

But he isn't black or white. He is a mix with both features. His skin is very light and he has no problem playing a white role.. because he is infact white. Just like him playing a black role would be fine... because he is infact black.

He won the Color-Blind casting lottery.

Exactly. That boy looks very white. That dudn't even count.
Looks Latino to me

How would you feel about someone like him playing Batman or the Black Panther.

I gotta go to bed guys. I'll be back tommorow.

Do you feel the same way if a white person were to put on black makeup and play a black role? Do you have any idea the up-roar that that would cause from the racist segment of the black community?
Of course some black people would be fine with it and understand, but some black people wouldn't.

Just like the racist segment of the white community would be mad about the opposite,

I thought he was just White, and if I learned that he was something else, I would've thought White and Latino.

:wow: :wow: :wow:

I never knew that his dad was Black, White, and Native American, while his mother was White and of Middle Eastern descent.

Like you said. If he was the best for the role, than fine. I just don't like the idea of black people putting on white makeup and white people putting on black makeup. It is way too unstable ground to walk on.

I feel that if a white guy could really convince of the character he was playing then yes. I don't want to half-ass acting I want Oscar winning preformance.

Another form of color-blind casting was when they used white people as Indians in the old Western movies.

Brilliant makeup job.

I understand what you're saying for this utopian world where color doesn't matter. But America is just far too racist to allow such things to happen now. Every race is far too sensitive.

West Side Story

A film about Puerto Rican and White gang violence. No Puerto Ricans were harmed (or used) during the making of this film.

:p

What was the last serious movie where a white actor portrayed a black character? I can't think of any.

But he does not look black, and since looks are more important than the actors background he shouldn't be able to play anything other than a white or mixed person.:o
