Well, if it's true he definitely would be closer to Robert E. Howard Conan style than Ahnold.

Wonder if he'll wear blue contacts?

I honestly thought he was like mixed black/white when I saw him on Stargate, but apparently he's hawaiiain, irish, german, and whatever else.

From LatinoReview:
It’s official. Momoa is the new Conan!
Last week Michael Fleming on Deadline Hollywood reported that Jason Momoa and Kellan Lutz along with a third more well known name were contenders to topline CONAN for Lionsgate.
Who was the 3rd well known name which Michael Fleming didn’t mention?
It was Supernatural’s JARED PADALECKI.
Padalecki worked with Marcus Nispel recently on the Friday the 13th reboot.
Prior to Padalecki auditioning, Momoa, Lutz, and another unknown actor named John Brotherton went through a series of rigorous screen tests.
From those original three, it was Momoa who emerged early on as Marcus Nispel’s top choice with Kellan Lutz a distant second.
The folks at Lionsgate wanted to be extra sure, hence why they held off offering the part to Momoa and auditioning Jared Padalecki which took place this week.
What was the game changer?
Why the change of heart for the studio?
Momoa came into Lionsgate late last week after the Fleming story broke and met with everyone at the studio and charmed the pants off the executives.
Apparently, Momoa is good in the room.
Momoa also screen tested yet again this week.
So there you have it folks, Jason Momoa is your new Conan.
Momoa has starred in Stargate Atlantis, Baywatch Hawaii, and a couple of episodes of CW’s The Game.
With less than eight weeks to go before production starts, Momoa starts training rigorously for the part on Monday.
In other Conan news, after an early draft the script leaked online last year, Andrew Lobel as recently as December did revisions on the script originally penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. From what I was told, Lobel knocked the rewrite out of the park.
Formal announcements in the trades should be imminent
But that's not all.
*UPDATE*
I just found out that the offer has gone out to Mickey Rourke to play Conan's dad, CORIN!
Stay tuned as more develops.
Hasta el proximo capitulo…

Ball is a rolling gent's. The Mickey Rourke casting, unexpected but welcome...

No, he doesn't.

Love the first movie, but I don't want any link with that adoption. I want a fresh start.

The geeks on AICN are already lambasting it. "Conan is white! **** this affirmative action choice!"

Well, this is what separates the Arnold Conan fans from the literary Conan fans. Cimmerians had a certain bronzed look described to them, this guy looks natural as opposed to guy with a deep tan.

I just hope the guy doesn't have dreads playing Conan.

I guess they prolly cast him to save on money. I mean i've never seen that show, so I can't judge him.

I haven't seen him act, but visually he looks very good.

I just hope the rewrite of the script is vastly better than the Donnelly/Oppenheimer script.

Well, it could be worse, we could have gotten a 'roid Gorilla again with some thick german/austrian accent.

Casting looks interesting. I would like to see him shaved and without dreads, but he has that certain look to him; his eyes has that "don't **** me with me" look, and that arrogance that the young Conan has.

I'm down with it. The only thing that bothers me is that interview with Nispel where he seems to imply that he's never read a Howard story ever.

When Jason was first mentioned for the role I was apprehensive thinking that there has got to be someone more suited. But now that he's cast I see where they are going. REH himself described Conan as "lithe as a panther, deep or chest, copper skinned." He's got all those. His face does not match what I had in my head for what he would look like but otherwise from his build and his gravely voice seem a good match.

Okay, as soon as I found out this guy is going to be Conan, I went to youtube and watched this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTi8W7nime8

I gotta say he does have a mighty good voice... but other then that he comes off, at least on this clip, as a deep voiced Keanu Reeves. Kinda woody and stiff. But depending on what kind of Conan they are going to depict in the movie, that just might be enough. I can see him possibly giving a "okay" performance.

I think I read somewhere (TV Guide maybe?) that he actually had real dreadlocks at one point, but he shaved them off because they were causing him problems. Afterwords, I think he started wearing a wig to maintain the dreadlock look on Star Gate Atlantis.

So, if that is true and I'm not thinking of somebody else, then the only way he'd have dreads as Conan would be if the people doing Conan gave him some. Or he grew them back between when he cut them off and now, but if they were causing him problems I don't think he'd be growing them back.

I watced some clips of Stargate Atlantis, and Momoa was much better. I'm starting to think casting him as Conan is not bad at all. He's going to top Arnold, that's for sure. Not that toping Arnold would be a big stretch to anyone, acting-wise. Jason definetly looks like Conan more then Ahnie. Only thing to worry about now is Conan being another Pathfinder. That movie sucked.

Havent seen the guy act so i'm a bit apprenhensive, hope he is good though.

I've had a couple friend sport dreads, it wrecks your scalp, and gives you neck issues because of the extra weight.

the more I look at this guy in clips (especially action clips from Stargate), I think he's a good fit for the part.

He has the right Face and the right Voice and the right height, all he needs is a few steroids and hes a Perfect Cast.

Not a bad choice...........he looks the part.......hopefully he has the skill to pull off Conan.

However the story details still turn me off. We don't need to meet Conan's dad, be treated to an origin, or have Conan on an avenging crusade. Bring on an adult Conan with his birth on the battle field, and his birth to battle at the sack of Vanerium, being a briefly mentioned as back ground.

Yeah, he hasn't had the dreads for a while.

Glad to see him getting work. I thought he was just gonna retire from acting and take up getting Lisa Bonet pregnant full-time!!!

Not if they're trying to portray the proper Robert E. Howard Conan. He was always described as 'Panther like', so I think his body type is fine... I'm hope this movie is as far away from Ah-nold's punching exploits.... Conan is like the Punisher, in that he's actually a really interesting, deep and intriguing character, but everytime he gets represented on film, they just make them bland, buff, archetypal action heroes.

Agreed fully, but unfortunately, we are getting an origin film that sounds closer to Milnus Conan than REH Conan. Looks like they want a franchise out of it again, and the producers seem to have little faith in the source material to actually not establish Conan being that unconnected from the first two films, which is an incredible missed opportunity.
