i think Momoa looks like Conan. regardless of what Howard said about Conan's ethnicity, he never looked like a full blooded white man to me. to me, he always looked sorta mixed with Native America or Samoan or something. that manip of Momoa with Conan's hair looks JUST LIKE Conan to me. all he really needs to do is bulk up.

i'm more concerned for the director....Pathfinder wasn't a very good movie, if it all.

Not really.

Howard wrote an essay called "The Hyborian Age" where he detailed all the different races & countries of his background setting. The Cimmerians are his literary analogue of Gaels/Celts, in the same way that his fictional countries of Asgard & Vanaheim are analogues of Viking Scandinavia.

I'm only asking because Wiki says that Cimmerians were equestrian nomads mistakenly believed by premodern historians to be ancestors of the Celts. Perhaps Howard bought into this theory.

Agreed, I'm black myself but I don't like the double standard when it comes to All Things Racial that happens these days someone has a racially based opinion, let them speak it and let's talk about it...

All this "shut up whitey" BS only pushes people with actual concerns into bigotry. If someone has a concern they should be able to bring it up and we should try to discuss it from all viewpoints rationally. Examining the root of objections on both ends lets us really look at where we are when it comes to our own prejudice on these matters...

the fact that it has become a major part of this thread can be seen as unfortunate but it's nice to have this on the table and so far we have avoided any flaming or trolling for the most part...

I agree. I view this debate the same way the same way I view the Prince of Persia casting debate. Some fans are purists who want the casting to match the source material as much as possible, others say it's just a movie, and the actor looks enough like the character, so who cares? Both are perfectly valid.

If you've ever read actual Howard Momoa is not a perfect fit, not sure what he could possibly have "looked like" to you as to my knowledge Howard has never drawn him... the Manip of Momoa however is in keeping with many artistic interpretations of him such as those by Cary Nord which are heavily (imo) influenced by John Buscema...

Amusingly enough I wonder if any one in that thread (didn't enter cause didn't care enough) Brought up the fact that Persians are ethnically Caucasian...

Some people of Persian descent in the thread pointed out that Gyllenhaal looks like he could be Persian.

Well if the grouping itself is willing to own it...

how many have read at least the breakdowns and what are we thinkin for the rest of the cast?

I love the fact Jason Momoa is playing Conan, he was great on Stargate Atlantis!

Then again the script might kill this, from what we all seem to be hearing about the changes.

That is the question. If we could get a script review of Andrew Lobel's rewrite of the Donnelly/Oppenheimer mediocre script, that would be neat.

There's also the question of Marcus Nispel being able to be a more competent director.

Leo Howard Cast as Young Conan
Source:Latino Review February 16, 2010

Latino Review has learned that 12-year-old Leo Howard, who played young Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Laser in Shorts, has been cast in Lionsgate's Conan as the young Conan.

The site says that Howard's role is "the audience's first introduction to Conan for the first 15 minutes or so."

Jason Momoa plays the adult Conan the rest of the Marcus Nispel-directed movie, which is in pre-production in Bulgaria.

The film is based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian.

For a guy with no actual lines, I thought he did a pretty good job as li'l Snake Eyes. Sommers said he was blown away by the 2 kids' performances and how they did stunts he wanted to use doubles and camera tricks for.

I feel the same way about Harry Potter. Regardless of what Rowling said about Harry Potter's ethnicity, he never looked like a full-blooded English white boy to me, and he never had glasses either. Harry Potter always looked mixed Australian Aborigine and and Chinese with 20/20 vision. I also don't care what Rowling said about Harry's age....to me, he's always been an older man of about 45.

edited cause it just wasn't funny...

An interesting article on Jason Momoa: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100219/LIFE/2200302/1046/ENT

Also, like Avatar and Clash of The Titans, Conan might go 3D!!

http://www.conanmovieblog.com/2010/02/19/conan-possibly-going-to-be-filmed-in-3d/

Conan possibly going to be filmed in 3D

According to iesb.net the upcoming Conan movie will be filmed in 3D or at least have partly 3D effects, since Lionsgate has sent out job offers to several special effect houses to do the 3D element of the movie. After Avatar being such a huge success and the reason why many cinemas have installed 3D projectors and technology this new way of pulling the audience into a movie has gone mainstream over night.
While these in general are good news, since well done 3D filming can improve the overall experience, it has to be put in good hands, or it is turned into a gimmick by the “mainstream” intentions of managers (aka things attacking the camera constantly). In addition filming a movie in 3D or doing it’s effects in 3D, is going to be a lot more expensive than filming it traditionally, so the question is where the cut in the films budget (depending on the extense of the 3D effects) will be made.
This is both good and bad news and only time will tell on which side of the poker table this rumour will fall.

Interesting. You know, for a guy who supposedly doesn't care much for comic book movies, Rourke certainly signs onto a lot of them.

Well, in all fairness, Conan isn't specifically a "comic book" movie, as it is more "pulp literature" like "John Carter of Mars", Tarzan, Zorro, and Solomon Kane,..... but I see what you mean.

Sean Hood is rewriting Conan.

Also, WWE star Shad Gaspard talks about auditioning for a role in Conan and also about Jason Momoa: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/02/23/shad-gaspard-describes-his-conan-audition/

Among what he says:

" I actually got to meet Jason Momoa, and it was kind of funny because, both being tall guys, we measured each other up. And in case you're wondering, I am bigger. But he has put on some size for the role and is really taking it serious.. Jason seemed like a pretty cool guy when I met him. And the fact that people are underestimating him, to me, it's going to pay off. Unlike most pictures you see of him on the internet, he has already cut his dreads, and he has bulked up to a decent size right now — but he could probably put on another 10 to 15 pounds and look amazing on film."

Sorry:cwink:

Anyway, yeah, it is not particularly a very enthusiastic sign. However, if I'm not mistaken, during the shooting of the first Iron Man some rewriting was being done for that film. Who knows?

this is a hardcore last minute, rewrite.

I don't know..

Thanks for posting that, had several cool tid-bits, including Mamoa saying he will be wearing Blue contacts.

Oh no, I can't stand it when they do that, they should *always* stick with teh actor's real eye colour, no matter how many folok complain about ethnic authenticity or whatever. It always looks fake and takes something away from the actor's performance.
It happened with Hopkins when he played Picasso and they gave him big brown contacts, and Jessica Alba looked quite alien and unreal in the eyes in FFROTSS, she looked fine without them in FF1.

As for the quick re-write, hopefully some good will come of it, the writer has worked with the director before and has written a well recieved herciles script, so might be something there that could benefit the movie. Even if it to be done in a compressed time frame.

From what I understand of the Donnelly/Oppenheimer script, basically, is that if you're a Robert E. Howard "purist", you'll be quite dissapointed. On the other hand, if you're a big fan of Savage Sword of Conan comics, you might dig the script.

It appears that the main problem with that script is that it offers fantasy elements that we have already seen in past fantasy films like Conan The Destroyer, Kull The Conqueror, and Beastmaster. In those films, these elements hardly worked. Now, let's consider also, that we have come a long way in visual effects since those films came out, so maybe they might work better for this film. We'll see.

The only way that particular script could work, is if they get everything else in the movie correct; cinematography, choreography, special effects, casting, etc... Then, maybe, it can turn out to be a solid, watchable film like 300 and Solomon Kane. Otherwise, it will be just another camp-fest like The Scorpion King.

As troublesome as this last minute rewrite might sound, let's hope it can straighten out some the Doppenheimer flaws. And hopefully then some.
