Constantine General Discussion Thread - Part 1

I hope the ratings go up some, it must be the 10pm slot since Grimm does good numbers.

Plus the DVR rating to add onto it.

Going by the comics they should probably bring her back to kill her off.

One of the main tropes about Constantine from the comics and was mentioned in the pilot is that his supporting cast tended to get killed off.

Friends, family and girlfriends. Even Constantine's acquaintances like his land lady brother of someone he dated once gets killed off in the comics.

Seeing as John's dad was mentioned, I hearby nominate David Bradley for Thomas Constantine

DVR ratings don't really matter all that much. It certainly doesn't hurt, but advertisers pay because people are seeing ads. People with DVRs generally fast forward through ads.

DVR ratings will never help a struggling show get renewed. What matters are the live ratings+demographics first and foremost, and they're most similar to the numbers that advertisers use to decide where to spend money.

More here:

You've got to remember that all the shows that beat Constantine in the live ratings will also increase with the DVR ratings. So Constantine doesn't improve in relative terms, even if it does in absolute terms.

Thy should count on demand views, I watched it and couldn't fast forward through commercials

Good news. This is the only DC TV show I'm truly worried about.

Me too, and that's a shame because it might be the best one. I wish it was on a better night, but then the competition might be too tough.

If it wasn't going to be on cable I would've rather the CW take it and make it part of the Flash/Arrow-verse and if the CW didn't want that AND Supernatural, then well, Supernatural hasn't been good in years and I'd be happy to be rid of it

I'd have no interest in seeing this show crossover with Flash or Arrow.

Except Berlanti/Kreisberg/Guggenheim aren't the EPs of Constantine (Goyer and Cerone are) and Geoff "They're Superfriends!" Johns doesn't care for him just as he doesn't for Batman (see GL: Rebirth and Batman: Earth One)

Spectre has spin-off potential written all over it
Geoff Johns really wants a Doctor Fate spin-off
David Goyer is pushing for Swamp Thing and if that goes well, a Swamp Thing spin-off
And let's not even discuss all the possibilities of a Zatanna spin-off
Decisions, decisions....:hmm

Neither do I. It's way too different.

Now that possible Spectre spinoff...

The superhero and supernatural aspects of the DCU might exist in tandem, but I don't need them constantly/or even occasionally bumping uglies. They should be like separate countries on the same map.

But, yes, I am all for finding a way to spin off another supernatural character from this show, when they choose to do so. When news about a possible Lucifer series was released, I thought it might be strange being on FOX when this is on NBC, but as it turns out, Lucifer and John don't really interact much/at all.

Loved the first episode! Looking forward to see where this goes. I really didn't get into Constantine until they brought him into the main DCU. But i've been getting back issues of Hellblazer to catch up. I hope we get Zatanna and Dr. Fate this season!

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. The Flash and Arrow don't have any supernatural elements, and I hope they keep it that way. But spinning off something like the Spectre or Lucifer could be cool. I'd KILL for a Phantom Stranger show. That's one character I've always loved and I wish they'd do more with him overall.

Wonder if Etrigan will put in an appearance on this show....?

And that should happen first as it'd be very fitting since John was spun-off from Swamp Thing only for the reverse to happen 30 years later.

Nice enough so far. I've never read the comics. Actually, maybe just one, from the early 90s, I think: I think Glen Fabry did the cover. Not much in the way of any kind of real action in the plot-- it was someone's birthday, maybe John's.. several of his friends/allies show up, including Swamp Thing, who as a gift to John (and whoever else was interested) makes a cannabis plant grow huge, and then... anyway, lol..

What is this "backstabber" knock that I'm constantly reading about Constantine?
What is his exact origin? Is he purely human? How did he learn magic?

The show might benefit from a shorter season, like Sleepy Hollow.

That would be #63 you've read. It was John's 40th Birthday.

About John:

*Born in Liverpool; Mother died during childbirth (in #100 it was revealed to be a forced back alley abortion courtesy by his dad and some old bag he took her to perform it)

*His dad, the drunkard that he was, constantly blamed him for the wife's death when it was his own fault (see point above); went to jail for stealing women's undergarments and John and his older sister stayed with relatives for the time being. The estrangement between John and Thomas gave way to John reading up magic book to make the old coot suffer (and it work for a long time before the event of The Family Man)

*Ran away to London in his teens where he would say with Chas and later formed the band Mucous Membrane with schoolmate Gary Lester and two other. Their only song was Venus of the Hard Sell. John and Gaz joined with other magicians and clarevoyants (Ritchie being among them as was Anne Marie, Ben Cox, Judith, and Frank North). The Newcastle event mentioned took place there in the Cassanova Club. The lesser demon was called Norfulthing that slaughtered everyone at the club with Astra as the lone survivor before John and the ganf came.

*The Newcastle event (and Astra's death/damnation via Nergal) mentally scared everyone as the Met and Ravenscar saw John as her killer (punks were frowned upon heavily in the late 70s); He stayed at the facility for two years (in the show 6 months and the earliest ref in Swamp Thing, "a few weeks") before being sprung by a East End mobster's brother who wanted his dead son resurrected.

*John is indeed human though gained Nergal's blood in his vein during an encounter with him at a hospital while recovering from throwin himself off a train (escaping ghosts of his dead chums). His talent is relying on his wits and can be manipulative at best.
