I'm not sure if there are any threads focusing on general continuity in the Dark Knight trilogy other than the one focusing on the Joker.

Anyway, one of the things that kind of bugged me about TDK was that they barely mentioned the Narrows and the fear-gas attack from BB. The only reference to the fear-gas attack was the appearance put in by the Scarecrow in TDK. However, what happened to the Narrows?!? I always thought this would've been a big plot point for the BB sequel before TDK came out. However, it seems like the LoS might play a role in TDKR based on the casting of young Ra's and the strong possibility of Tate = Talia.

As far as TDK references goes, it isn't clear if there will be any mention of the Joker, but it seems like Harvey Dent's legacy will be a large part of TDKR's plot based on set pics, the rumored Harvey Dent act, and the TDKR plot description. In a way, even if Joker is never mentioned, his influence will still be felt if they ever bring up the Dent cover-up in TDKR. And if Dent is mentioned, I think there will also be something to be said about the state of organized crime after TDK (which was pretty much decimated from loss of leadership and money).

Anybody have any speculation/wishes for references to the previous movies ?(eg. another appearance by Dr. Crane, LoS, mention of the Joker, and FALAFEL GUY)

I would be pretty disappointed if there were no mention of the joker, especially if Dent is such a big part of it. Seeing as how easily the joker got out of capture in TDK, plus his warning of battling batman forever... It would seem like a cop out letting all that go.

Plus, I'd like to see more of the railways in the exterior city shots, given its importance to the city in BB.

:doh:i forgot to mention the monorail. The monorail made a brief/small cameo in one of the exterior shots of TDK right before Bruce Wayne's fundraiser party for Harvey Dent. I think I only noticed this upon 2nd viewing (which was also at an 60 foot Imax screen). Now I can't unsee it, even when watching it on TV.

Well to be fair, it had been one year supposedly since the events of BB, and nothing in the story as far as I saw called for references to really be made to the whole fear gas incident since it seemed that the main priority for Batman and Gordon was to take down the mob once and for all (prior before Joker became a credible threat from their POV).

And they did mention on how Wayne Manor was still being rebuilt, which was a result out of it being burned down by Ra's, while Sal Maroni was now the new head of the crime bosses after Falcone had lost it.

Then you have Bruce telling Rachel about the very conversation that they had at the end of BB.

I think if anything, TDKR will be the film that bridges both BB and TDK in the best of ways. Now as to whether the Joker himself will be mentioned as well, well that remains to be seen...

I've never noticed this :P

There is however a lot of mention of the fear gas attack on the special feature/viral news segments that Anthony Michael Hall hosts.

:doh:Also forgot about the narrative thread between BB and TDK of the Bruce/Rachel relationship, probably the biggest point of continuity between the two films. PLUS, the mention of Wayne manor being rebuilt after BB.

HOWEVER, I would like to point out as an NYC native that something like the monorail attack would be like Gotham's 9/11. This (the fictional fear-gas attack) was a very traumatic event for the city and wiped out one its neighborhoods. Some type of small reference would suffice. Then again, the fear-gas attack doesnt have much significance to TDK's story.

:wow:NOW I just realized something (sorry the train of thought type post). A slight reference was actually made to the fear-gas attack through some of the Joker's henchmen (said to be escaped Arkham patients).

Continuity in the form of a Falcone comeback would be pretty cool if you ask me. With Maroni dead it's time for some Falcone. Not sure how he would factor into the story, as I doubt the mob will have a significant role in this film at all. The Scarecrow cameo sounds pretty exciting too. And I'm sure Joker will be alluded to at least once

It would be really cool to see how Bane looks when someone infected by Scarecrow's gas watches him.

Banes fear since childhood is bats. That was one of the roots for his obsession with Batman. Interestingly enough Begins' Batman origins take a lot from Bane's origins. In both the character fears bats from childhood and is taught that facing your fear will purge it and will open many possibilities and paths to become more than a man

I'd like a mention of Joker, Rachel, and Bruce's parents (which were are getting based on the trailer). Oh and Batman should be a wanted fugitive over taking the blame for Two Face's crimes. There's no way that can be ignored. It's too big.

Dent also mentions Carmine Falcone being in Arkham in the courtroom scene with Maroni.

I think the most obvious one that we all tend to overlook is that at the end of BB Batman was handed a Joker card, and low and behold the Joker was the villain in TDK lol.

Yeah, I think this was also proposed/speculated with the Joker. It would be cool to see how the Nolanverse villains would look under the influence of fear gas.

 I remember being really really hyped for the BB sequel after seeing that Joker card. And 3 years later, we got TDK !!! Sadly, not a lot of sequel hooks for villains in TDK (unless "it should do well against cats" counts)

The Joker card was always an amazing cliffhanger, but then with TDK as an established sequel/companion to BB it's an even more awesome conduit between the two.

I didn't notice that before! The monorail is also in the first Joker shot, when he's with his back to the camera. It's in the background but it's there. :)

When Bruce Wayne is driving about in his Lambo looking for cops who might kill Reese he drives under the monorail in some shots...

In BB, Batman tells Gordon :

" The storm is coming "

Mmm....

The best piece of continuity IMO was the "Little Supper" / "Little Breakfast" homage. Subtle and brilliant.

Followed by Alfred saying "Very well" when Bruce says nothing and begins to walk away and Bruce calls him back. Both scenes where Bruce is grieving for the loss of someone, too.

That was a neat touch.

I'm wondering with eight years of 'peace time' what Batman has done in terms of crime fighting.

And there's a shot in the TDKR trailer where there's a bowl covering a dish (Bruce is walking towards it with a cane). Perhaps it's a "little lunch" and this time Bruce decides to have it..?

Actually the "monorail" scene in the first shot with the Joker getting into the vehicle is obviously Chicago's L. And if you have ever had the Pleasure to ride the real Chicago's L train you would know its NOTHING like what was depicted in BB. In fact its a POS. The 100 year old tracks are so bad that the computer on the train has to slow down for "bad spots" in the track every 2-4 seconds and when your done you feel like you have a bad case of whiplash.
So long story short. Chicagos L train is a Piece of *****...
had to get that out there...

The batsuit is carried over for the first time in any live action film. The Begins panther suit, obviously in the opening scene of TDK. They explain why he needs an upgrade rather than just mysteriously starting off the film with a whole new suit as every other film has done. As far as we have seen, the TDK suit continues to be used in TDKR, and is his only suit, maybe with a few slight upgrades/modifications. That's a huge point of continuity.

6 months, it would make sence for everything to still be being rebuilt

I have never thought about that and now that I think about it, that was (like you said) a neat touch.
