As for the question of the thread:
I'd say that for a mod who decided on their own to step down, going back to regular poster status and 'reintegrating' back into the boards can work out great. I've done it elsewhere, and some previous mods have done it here.

When it's not the moderator's decision to step down, however... it's a different story. It's bascially being told: "You're not really welcome here anymore."
